Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
Worth noting that the largest crowd at the Ryan Center for a basketball game this season was not for the men. The women's team drew 6,918 to their 12/21/2023 game versus LeMoyne in their RI Education Day free event which had many local school children in attendance. The women are averaging 1,795 through ten games. The best attended men's game was UMass on 01/13/2024 which drew 5,496.

If you did a mens game with that same exact promotion it’d be a sell out. It was free admission for the general public as well.
Be better than that.

I merely stated the FACTS and included the info that the Women's game with LeMoyne was a free event with many local school children.Rhody15 wrote: ↑4 months agolol come on man, that is completely apples to oranges.RF1 wrote: ↑4 months ago Worth noting that the largest crowd at the Ryan Center for a basketball game this season was not for the men. I did not see a lot of beer consumption and the concession area was quite manageable. Morgan Miller said they opened up that area more since the Millers were there, so it may have been improved.ramster wrote: ↑4 months agoI’ve been there a couple times when Jim Baron was CoachLoveThoseRams wrote: ↑4 months ago I know that Rothstein says "a game at the Seigal Center is life changing" or some crap like that.
I have to say, I was at the Dayton game and it was like nothing I have ever experienced. The arena was so LOUD, you couldn't speak to the person next to you. The band was huge...the students knew all the songs, chants, and hand motions for all their songs. (And yes the students were behind the basket, closest to the visitors)It was deafening. I was really surprised at the capacity, because the arena felt small. Every seat was full.
Guess what? The announcer wasn't overbearing and trying to be the show.
It was sold out and I was amazed at the beer consumption. Long lines for beer and everyone was buying one for each hand. Was there a lot of beer consumption at this game?
Were there many URI fans? Very few when I went. I sat right behind the URI bench. Once sat next to Jim Baron’s brother who was a good guy and very energetic and outspoken.
I saw Sean Miller in the stands right behind the URI bench for the game. He
Was the music loud and the announcer loud to where they made it difficult to hear the person next to you talk? Or was it loud because of the voices of the fans themselves?
How about halftime and games to entertain like kids games at halftime, bowling, etc? Anything URI should copy from your experience? Anything URI should drop?
The fans were very loud, the announcer didn’t bother me at all. But I guess anything is better than Dan Yorke.
We sat right in front of Sean and his family. He was very engaging. I was impressed with how many Dayton fans came over to Morgan with warm embraces.
There was about 30 or so URI fans that I could tell.
The halftime show was an acrobat woman with hula hoops while standing and rolling on giant balls

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
The largest crowd (5,822) of the year came out to the Ryan Center yesterday to an early 12:30pm match-up won by Duquesne. The season to date average has now risen to 4,197, its high for the year. As with most past seasons, the attendance has gone up in A-10 conference play with more familiar foes. My initial preseason expectation of average attendance in the low 4k range looks like it will in fact be realized. I had revised my estimate downward to the upper 3k range in December after a string of poorly attended games and reduced performance expectations but that appears to have been a pessimistic mid-season over-reaction. With just four home games left, URI has to only average 3,361 to achieve a total season average of 4k. Just one game so far has had less than that. While the number will likely exceed an average of 4k, it will most assuredly be among the worst years in the 20+ year history of the Ryan Center. The two lowest averages were 3,829 in 2011-12 and 4,291 in 2012-13.

I think it is pretty much a given that next year is going to again experience low attendance numbers as I see a further erosion of season ticket sales. This will really hit URI in the pocketbook at a bad time as Miller's compensation levels are set to significantly increase. He is to get a $500,000 retention bonus in September (second and last due a year later) and his guaranteed annual compensation increases by $500,000 for years 3-5 of his contract. Making financial matters worse, I believe that the NCAA units earned in the last two seasons of Hurley (2016-17 and 2017-18) will be fully paid out under the rolling six year distribution process. It will likely be a very challenging season for the program's finances given rising expenses and declining revenues.

So, URI considers an arena that's 76% full (5822/7657) to be 'near capacity'?

5800 is still a very very nice number given the opponent and our record.

I may be wrong, but I believe Parlange was able to get Miller's salary into the URI Budget. So now everything is coming out of the URI General Fund.RF1 wrote: ↑4 months ago The largest crowd (5,822) of the year came out to the Ryan Center yesterday to an early 12:30pm match-up won by Duquesne. 5822 is definitely a solid number for a team like Duquesne
I’m also thinking low numbers next year maybe 4200 or 4300

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
We'll see, I wouldn't be surprised if next year's average is better than this year. Last year was such a disappointment that it ran off any people that bought just for the goodwill of the Archie hire. Also, this home schedule was particularly poor, with no real draw, so selling mini-plans must have been a massive challenge. I think having PC on the schedule and the associated bump in season tickets and mini-plan purchases will negate the few people that decide this is the season that made them finally snap and stop coming. Unfortunately that probably also means that next year's PC game will have the weakest homecourt advantage for us since the Ryan Center opened

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
Two more home games in the books with just two more remaining. The official reported attendance has held steady despite the continued poor performance of the team. The average has risen in conference play to 4,281. If the season were to end now, this would be the second lowest average in the 21 seasons of attendance at the Ryan Center. The present average however is very close to the next lowest average of 4,291 that occurred in 2012-13. It is therefore very possible this season could end up as the third lowest average when finished.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
The home slate at the Ryan Center is now concluded with the last game versus George Mason drawing the smallest crowd (3,139) of the entire season. URI drew a total of 72,024 to seventeen games for an average of 4,237. This average was an 18% decline from the prior season as the program drew 82,531 to sixteen games for an average of 5,158. The 2023-24 average of 4,237 places it as the 2nd lowest season average ever recorded in the 21 seasons of attendance at the Ryan Center. Only the 2011-12 season (the last of the Baron era) which drew an average of 3,829 was lower.
While URI recorded its second worst average in 21 years, it appears as if it will still have the 5th best average in the A-10 (behind UD, VCU, UR, and SLU). It has held this position much of the last decade. Some A-10 schools still have home games left to play but all of their averages are less and it is not possible that any can go ahead. In most recent years, URI would be far closer in its average attendance to the team just above it in the rankings. There would typically be a big gap between 5th and 6th place. That big gap was this season between 4th and 5th place as URI's average is presently well over 1k behind the team above it and expected to finish above SBU by just a few hundred.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
I would expect to see a significant drop off in season ticket sales heading into next year (even with the allure of a PC home game). These customers have sat there through three horrible seasons and all the poor performances and losing has taken a toll. I would think that many are going to take a wait and see approach to the program. Perhaps some of them will return if they see demonstrable improvement. Some however will most likely be lost for good.
The inconsistent performance history of URI basketball is such that it is never really able to build a strong season ticket base or general fan base. It seems that every successful period where upward momentum is started is short lived and thereafter followed by a period of failure. What had been gained is quickly lost and the process must once again later be restarted after a drop off. One step forward, one to two steps backward.

I'm thinking because of total lack of interest, there will be a lot of tickets available for the PC game for their fans to grab. That would really suck.RF1 wrote: ↑3 months ago I would expect to see a significant drop off in season ticket sales heading into next year (even with the allure of a PC home game). I think they will make even more extra tickets available for the PC game to season ticket holders so that won't necessarily be the case.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑3 months agoI'm thinking because of total lack of interest, there will be a lot of tickets available for the PC game for their fans to grab. Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
I just hope we do not enter an attendance death spiral like UMass. Multiple down years took a huge toll on their numbers. Even with 20 wins this season (present record of 20-10), their average attendance could not even get near 4k as it was only 3,477. This was actually less than the prior year when the team's record was 15-16. Prolonged trends are sometimes hard to quickly reverse.

It wasn't a sell out last year, so PC fans could have grabbed tickets. There were 7662 for last year's game & the previous home game before that in 2019 had 8052.RF1 wrote: ↑3 months agoI think they will make even more extra tickets available for the PC game to season ticket holders so that won't necessarily be the case.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑3 months agoI'm thinking because of total lack of interest, there will be a lot of tickets available for the PC game for their fans to grab. Not a chance there were 3,139 in attendance last night. It was embarrassing to even be there. I get they go by sold tix, but that was embarrassing.RF1 wrote: ↑3 months ago The home slate at the Ryan Center is now concluded with the last game versus George Mason drawing the smallest crowd (3,139) of the entire season. URI for a long time had listed the official seating capacity of the Ryan Center at 7,657. I believe that any crowds above that number over the years have included standing room or those in luxury suites that did not have specific assigned seats.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
To be slightly "fair" to UMass fans, I don't think they were ever on the bubble this year. They've won 20, but it was a kind of soft, Baron-esque 20. It wouldn't surprise me if they see a good early season bump next year though, even though Cohen is out of eligibility (maybe) and if Cross doesn't stay for a fifth year.RF1 wrote: ↑3 months ago I just hope we do not enter an attendance death spiral like UMass. Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
The regular season is now concluded. These are the attendance numbers for the A-10. Keep in mind that these may not be the final NCAA reported numbers as some members may host post season games which are factored into the official NCAA numbers. URI once again placed 5th in the league. Worth noting that the order ranking of the top seven teams has remained pretty much static in the last three years other than Richmond and St Louis flipping positions in two seasons.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
This list almost pretty accurately lines up who everyone wishes would break off/be dropped from the conference.RF1 wrote: ↑3 months ago The regular season is now concluded.
