2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
The largest crowd (4,475) of the season thus far came out to the Ryan Center last night (12/07/23) to celebrate the new Ring of Honor players and watch the Rams fall to Brown. Through six games (out of seventeen), the YTD average attendance sits at 3,940. This is 1,389 off last season's six game average for a decline of 26%. Getting beat by Brown at home will surely not help attract fans to upcoming games. Without a very enticing opponent on the future schedule, I would not be surprised if last night may have been at or near the high mark for game attendance this season. Half the games thus far have attracted "crowds" of less than 4k. My expectation is that will become the norm for this year. I had preseason initially thought the average would likely settle out in the low 4k range. Based on the numbers thus far and probable trajectory of the team, I now think that estimate was too high. I now project that average attendance is likely to end up in the 3k range, something that has only happened once before (3,829 in 2011-12 season). This season is headed toward one of if not the lowest average attendance seasons in the 20+ year history of the Ryan Center.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
I think the bigger conference games will have higher attendance than the Brown game. Everyone that bought a 3 or 5 game package would have chosen conference games given the home OOC schedule was such trash.

I think Northeastern, UMass, Duquesne, Loyola Chicago, and Saint Louis will all draw more or similar because they're weekend afternoon games. The opponent quality doesn't matter so much as parents looking to get them and their kids out of the house

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
At this point, it appears there may be no "bigger conference games" which might attract more fans. As has been noted before, the typical better name draws of the league (Dayton and VCU) are not coming to the Ryan Center this season. Furthermore, the rankings and profiles of teams coming to Kingston later in the season is not all that appealing. Only three A-10 teams that will visit (St Joe's, Duquesne, and GMU) presently have NET ranks below 100. None of these teams in recent years have been great draws and St Joe's will visit during break. UMass which sometimes gets bigger crowds also comes to the Ryan Center during break. Given that URI's team performance prospects are low and attractive opponents are lacking, I do not see factors which might help bring people to games. I think we are likely to see URI playing out the string in a series of meaningless games against unattractive opponents in front of small home crowds.
URI's Upcoming Home Schedule Opponents with NET Rank
150 New Hampshire
202 Northeastern
86 St Joe's
122 UMass
223 Fordham
199 LaSalle
74 Duquesne
144 Loyola-Chicago
106 Richmond
226 St Louis
63 George Mason

I'm wondering how many mini-plans were sold this year. I can't imagine it was a lot.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
Advance Preseason ticket sales very much look down from a year ago. Keep in mind also that packages last year included the Providence game. There is no such game to drive sales this year. Based on the 26% drop off to date, I think this pretty much confirms that all package sales are probably significantly down.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑6 months agoI'm wondering how many mini-plans were sold this year. We haven't had the Greek Life game yet either. That always generates a monster student turnout, so whatever weeknight game they have that will end up being about the same or bigger than last night

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
A crowd of 4,311 came out today to see URI defeat Northeastern at the Ryan Center. Rhody through eight games at home has now drawn a total of 31,249 for an average of 3,906. This average is off some 1,029 per game or 21% from the numbers through the first eight home games last year (which had one less OOC game and included one A-10 game during break).

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
Even though it wasn't a huge crowd today, and no students to speak of due to break, I have to say I was relatively pleasantly surprised at the turnout. And most stayed to the end and gave a great standing O to the team, which was well-deserved.
Also, I counted 35 cheerleaders on the squad, not counting the Ramette team. That has to be some sort of record number of them. They put in a lot of work on that stuff and it's nice to see it. Makes a difference when the band is there or not too (not there today).

They played gary glitter (well, a tape of the pep band playing him) through the PA. It worked.
I still can’t help thinking it’s time to move on from that though.
Hate to see him getting any royalties when there is so much else that they could play.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
I was intrigued on a Davidson marketing plan that we are part of.
A three game package of VCU men, VCU woman and is for a total price of 10 bucks! Looks as if center court about half way up the top tier( really not bad seats and a lot better than end seats ) PLUS a BOGO beer offer. Buy one, get one free.
It is previous obvious that Davidson wants a large and maybe boisterous crowd and is willing to be creative to maximize the attendance.
Have we ever done something like this?
Any Rhode Islander’s going to be at the game ? I was fool enough to buy tickets at full price earlier in the season. Not sure if I get the beer BOGO anyhow.

You're talking about BOGO's? For beers? We're still trying to get over the idea that you can buy a beer and take it to your seat instead of having to quaff it in a petri dish...and already you're talking about deals on beers? Yeah, maybe in a few years? (I'm just glad they have a palatable selection)McRam wrote: ↑5 months ago I was intrigued on a Davidson marketing plan that we are part of.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
Honestly that’s the accurate number, seemed like everyone who possessed a ticket was there. No students on campus - so add 1000-1500 to that for comparisons sake.
90% of the teams in the NCAA will experience some semblance of the same over the next 2 weeks before classes come out.
Get off to a good start in conference play and you’ll have fans back.
If you say you’re a Rhody fan, I know you are my brother. For you have suffered as I have suffered.

UMass, now 10-3, had just 2,561 show up last night to see them put a beat-down on Duquesne. URI, with an NET in the 200's drew 3,252 last night for St Joe's. UMass average attendance YTD is 3,008 and Rhody is at 3,833. While there will be some UMass fans for the game in Kingston, I highly doubt they will dominate the crowd.

Also, the UMass game is a Saturday afternoon in January, when locals will be looking to get out of the house with their kids. If there is no snow we'll have a very good, and very pro URI, crowd
Take down the Robert Carothers banner and fix the concession stand lines

I'd also like to point out, that crowd last night was great. Engaged, loud...I mean that horrible call on Zek led to a reaction that caused another referee to blow a make up call on the ensuing inbounds play. I've never seen that before.RF1 wrote: ↑5 months agoUMass, now 10-3, had just 2,561 show up last night to see them put a beat-down on Duquesne. The crowd really came to life during those runs in the 2nd half. Honestly a great showing. If we can rattle off a couple here and go like 3-2/4-1 coming into Fordham on 1/24, that's probably a solid 5500-6k crowd for the first week back.

Going back the last 15 years I don’t recall many UMASS fans ever at the URI home game. Has not mattered with school was in or out. They usually congregate behind the UMASS bench in 103, 104. Not many and even with a good team this year I don’t think they travel well - games at UMASS are sparsely attended too.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
For all the complaining we do about the Ryan Center, one thing it definitely has going for it is great crowd acoustics. There was no band, no students, and mostly an older (season ticket holder) crowd there last night. And it still can get pretty damned loud. Noticeable for sure. Well-designed building from a cheering standpoint.Blue Man wrote: ↑5 months agoI'd also like to point out, that crowd last night was great. Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
A fairly decent crowd of 4,703 came out on a rainy Wednesday night to see URI play Fordham. This increased the YTD average to 4,064. This average is however some 20% off from the YTD average at the 11th home game of last year.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
With the performance of the last four seasons, I think it is going to be extremely difficult to maintain decent attendance numbers next year unless there is a very dramatic improvement. As would appear with this season, I think next year is going to see a further erosion of season ticket sales. This will really hit URI in the pocketbook at a bad time as Miller's compensation levels are set to significantly increase. He is to get a $500,000 retention bonus in September (second and last due a year later) and his guaranteed annual compensation increases by $500,000 for years 3-5 of his contract. Making financial matters worse, I believe that the NCAA units earned in the last two seasons of Hurley (2016-17 and 2017-18) will be fully paid out under the rolling six year distribution process.

Re: 2023-24 Ryan Center Home Attendance
I know that Rothstein says "a game at the Seigal Center is life changing" or some crap like that.
I have to say, I was at the Dayton game and it was like nothing I have ever experienced. The arena was so LOUD, you couldn't speak to the person next to you. The band was huge...the students knew all the songs, chants, and hand motions for all their songs. (And yes the students were behind the basket, closest to the visitors)It was deafening. I was really surprised at the capacity, because the arena felt small. Every seat was full.
Guess what? The announcer wasn't overbearing and trying to be the show.

It was sold out and I was amazed at the beer consumption. Long lines for beer and everyone was buying one for each hand. Was there a lot of beer consumption at this game?
Were there many URI fans? Very few when I went. I sat right behind the URI bench. Once sat next to Jim Baron’s brother who was a good guy and very energetic and outspoken.
I saw Sean Miller in the stands right behind the URI bench for the game. He
Was the music loud and the announcer loud to where they made it difficult to hear the person next to you talk? Or was it loud because of the voices of the fans themselves?
How about halftime and games to entertain like kids games at halftime, bowling, etc? Anything URI should copy from your experience? Anything URI should drop?
