Hare does actually look a little bit bigger/stronger to me in that practice video...

wow TJ must've shown something. You think he's just playing with lineups to see what he's got? because i think it was a consensus that X and biruta would be on the floor...

gotta say i'm surprised at the other 3 starters.

I'm going with starting the juniors and senior. And Hare, who even with his struggles last yearis the most experienced big man.

I thought I read they would throw out different starting line ups early on. I wouldn't read too much into it. The four upperclassmen and Hare who played almost 20mpg a game last year.

I'm with Ace: for the first game he went the returning players and Gil. And, yes, Hurley has said he would start a lot of different guy so no one would get discouraged this early.

I think if there's any signficance to that lineup is that Hurley went with three guards -- I think we'll see that a lot this year.

Great job for X, especially if they used the FIBa 3 point line which is further than the NCAA's:

FIBA: Arc radius 6.75 meters (22.1 ft), no less than 0.9 meters (3.0 ft) from each sideline[9]
NCAA: Arc radius 20 feet 9 inches (6.32 m), no less than 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 m) from each sideline[10]

I'm sure there was some home officiating going on, but honestly after seeing the team practice I worried about fouls. Hurley has them playing such tight and aggressive defense that in the practice they were fouling each other constantly.
So that means Gil was not in double figures.

If their play style is going to be aggressive defense and uptempo, it wouldn't surprise me if there are foul disparities like that for plenty of regular season games. However, this isn't the worst thing in the world, as usually the increase in turnovers you get from that type of defense makes up for sending the opponent a couple more times to the line at 65 to 70 percent.

Hurley's Wagner teams fouled a lot, too. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that, and he likes to use a deep bench, just don't get caught up in too many dumb ones.

X's outside shot looked awesome at the pre-Italy practice. Having fresh legs is a great cure for an outside shot. Playing 30-32 minutes a game this year as compared to around 38 last year will make a big difference. He could have a monster year.

1. Re: the lineup - I think he clearly went with his most "experienced" guys, and I wouldn't read anything into it. I will say, with regard to Powell, that when I said I thought he would start the year as the starter and Biggie or EC would have to beat him out, this is exactly what I meant. It is hard to unseat an incumbent in the offseason, but I'm sure the opportunity will be there for one of the other guys to win the job before November, and it could easily change again over the course of the year.

2. Re: the game - both in terms of individual scorers and the result, I wouldn't read much more into these games than you would a preseason football game or a spring training game. Sure, X was the leading scorer and he very well may lead the team in scoring during the season, but generally there will be very little carryover.

3. Re: the foul trouble - as others have pointed out, not the worst thing in the world. For all the reasons given, plus the fact that this team should go 10 deep every game, and could go deeper than that if necessary.

I love the offense and that amount of fouls makes me think that the opponent wouldn't of scored as many points (if they were free throws) Good news overall

nbc showed very brief highlights, basically ec with a right handed lay up and a sideline 3 from someone (could tell who).
I expect cox to release longer highlights probably tomorrow

The minutes were spread pretty evenly , X with the most w/24 and Butler with the least w/12. Looks like Hare had a very nice game with 11 pts. and 11 reb. in 20 minutes. First game jitters for the three freshmen? Not so much, they shot a combined 8-11 from the field. EC filled up the stat sheet with 10 pts., 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. The team assist/turnover ratio isn't good, but you'd expect that in a first game playing together. The team stat that I love is shots attempted. We had 61, they had 44...the reason?...we had 10 steals, they had none...sounds like our pressure defense caused problems for them.

Yep. nice stat line by EC. Martin, 10 and 5; Hare 11 and 11.
Looks like Gil never got going. One rebound by Iffy is surprising.
After the open practice I wondered if this team would be much better than last year's from 3-point land. Granted, it was a deeper 3, but X and Butler were 6-9 and the rest of the team 0-6. Worth watching how this develops.

Hey remember all those games we scored 92 points in the last 2 years? Oh wait...

Fouls are fine when your team is deep, and I love that we're playing aggressive. Things that will certainly carry over is that fact that in a game situation with defense on him X knocked down 5 of 8 3s from much further than NCAA depth.

holy shit I can't wait for basketball

From the GoRhody.com recap... I assume this is why they couldn't provide live tweets during the game:
The game was delayed close to 45 minutes due to two power outages in the arena and throughout the Pesaro area.

I think the inability to provide live tweets was more based on the fact that they had no internet access (wi-fi or wired) and had to rely on their phones to push limited updates via twitter.
