In his Blue Ribbon write-up, Chris DiSano talked about Sheppard’s eligibility, saying it wasn’t clear at the time of publication. Guess that’s still the case?

Horrible job by URI MBB and Athletic Dept if Sheppard isn’t eligible. There is no other way to say it.

This is fun and all, but you can see why almost every coach prefers secret scrimmage type games to these.

Yeah get those jitters out.

An ugly 53 without two important transfers is good though.

All the freshman getting good time, doing some good things.

They talked about Cyril hobbling. Would be nice if he just stopped playing now...

We can survive without Walker for a few weeks.

To me, Sheppard is more valuable short term, due to the lack of depth at the guard position.

The guy can shoot. What if Fatts starts chucking and ducking again?

Agree Sheppard is important. Walker is needed if Harris & Cyril get in foul trouble and to give them rest. Tate is small at the 4.

What's the average 3 pt. percentage for D1?

low 30's? I'd take that for us.....even a 5% increase means a couple more a game, and a few more wins.

Sheppard would help.

Playing in front of people is the only advantage. Coaches generally don’t like them because they don’t help them learn much about their team in the way that playing a more evenly matched opponent does. They’re not really tested, less teaching and learning opportunities.

Nice start to the year. Two key reserves that we were really counting on have eligibility issues that come out of nowhere, some injuries and probably the same three point shooting problems. How does this come out with Sheppard and Walker this late??

You cannot analyze this game without considering the level of competition and, given that fact, games against DII or DIII have no meaningful upside and only involve downside. That is exactly why "secret scrimmages" are way better.

You can say that we were pretty significantly better compared to last years exhibition game.

Also considering that we dont have our two best transfers.

I think Sheppard has been a concern for a while for most insiders (I'm not one, but I heard from people who are during the summer), he flunked out of school and then went JUCO. We hoped summer school fixed it. Walker was a surprise to me .

I'm stupid to think you're safe in late October, It's frustrating

The unfortunate part is that a game like this is most beneficial for new faces that may be critical pieces of the team in games that matter, ie Sheppard and Walker. For the rest of the team it’s just get through it without injury and get the freshmen a first game under the lights.

Couple observations from last night:
Jeff put on a lot of muscle- esp upper body
Jermaine looked better/more comfortable on the floor compared to last year(until he came out late in the first half)
Long looks like he can contribute.
Coaching staff spent the whole 1st half seated and did very little instructing during game play.
Team showed much more chemistry than they did last season- much more communication and encouragement
Jerseys given to season ticket holders look like the wrong shade of blue.
Not sure of attendance but lower bowl was abt 3/4 full. Very few people in the 300s.

I only stayed the 1st 1/2 then went to the soccer game.

My late observations from the RIC Game (busy work week :x )

- Boosters allowed in at 5:30pm was a nice surprise. Almost all in line at 5:30 walked in, my guess is not all were boosters but was only about 50 people anyway
- Nice feature pregame on the big video screen showing Jeff Dowtin and his 3.55 GPA!!
- Guess 1000 people, only about 50 in the upper seats, bottom about 2/3rds full
- Crowd likely diminished due to the 9000 at Family Day / Alumni Day Football Game plus Senior Night Soccer match also at 7pm
- TJ and Austin talked briefly with Ogundele prior to the game
- Good to see John Carroll back on the bench. He looks frail and moving slowly. He had a tough health battle and really impressive that he is back with the team. Austin Carroll is great and I think we are fortunate to have him. Returned back home to New England from Arizona partly because of his dads health. I would bet that Austin is a Head Coach one day. Austin and John are a nice story, and proud of David Cox bringing John back.

STARTERS
- Jermaine Harris got off to a good start scoring 9 points in 12 minutes!! Hit 5-6 FTs and just missed the shot he didn’t make. Smooth shooter. Got hurt and was Still limping at end of Game but seemed he would be ok. Saw him at the Football game. He is noticeably stronger and powerful looking.
- Cyril Langevine is thinner and stronger. He scored 10 points on 5-10 FG in 16 minutes. Missed a few close in shots, but he did that early last year too, so no worries. Confident he will be a solid point scorer. 0-2 on FTs and one FT was an air-ball. Had 3 assists in 16 minutes!! Looks confident and a leader of the inside game.
- Jeff Dowtin looks in great physical condition too. He played with confidence, played strong, took the ball inside the lane with authority. 5-9 FG, 2-2 FT for 13 pts plus 7 rebounds in 25 minutes. Looks confident and looked like a team leader on the court.
- Tyrese Martin also looks in great shape, played with confidence. 9-13 FG, 2-4 on 3P, 2-2 FT for game high 22 points plus 8 rebounds! Also had 3 assists. Martin runs the floor great. He is always ready for the ball, always moving without the ball and his teammates are looking for him more this year. Tyrese had 2 steals, 2 blocks and played a team high 28.22 minutes. Amazingly quiet 22 points but shows the point scoring potential he has. Efficient scorer and rebounder. Can see why David Cox says he has next level potential to play.
- Fatts Russell was electric with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists with only 1 TO. Fatts had several nice assists where he had his head up, looking down court and delivered some pinpoint passes. Fatts hit 1-2 on 3P but one of the 3P shots was from the top of the key and hit the backboard without touching the rim. Fatts had one inside drive shot blocked (interesting that they had BS and BA in the Box Score so not sure if this means Blocked Attempts will be a new stat this year?) Fatts had 2 air ball shots driving the lane where a fan near me said “what was that?” on one of the air balls. Critical this year for Fatts will be to play under control and distribute the ball like he showed with his 7 very nice assists. His rebounding was great. He was all over the floor with lots of energy

RESERVES
- Dana Tate is thinner, muscular and in great shape. 6 points and 7 rebounds in 20 minutes. 0-2 on 3P
- Jacob Toppin In 19 minutes looked good scoring 4 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Had a nice steal at mid court and took it in for the 360 dunk that has been highlighted. He had 2 steals and 2 blocks. Hit 2-2 FTs. He is tall but also has long arms. He seems to have good timing and could be a proficient shot blocker and ball stealer in his career. Could see considerable playing time this year.
- Mekhi Long played 17 minutes. 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, zero TO’s and 2-2 FTs. He looked steady and comfortable on the floor.
- DJ Johnson played 13 minutes. 1 point, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 0-3 on 3Ps but he has a nice release. 1-2 FTs but the miss was close to going in. He had a nice blocked shot but did not show in the stat sheet for whatever reason. Runs the floor well, long arms, good timing, had a couple of nice passes. DJ looked impressive to me even though the stat sheet may not say the same. In warm ups his shooting ability is evident and no surprise he hit 44% on 3P’s in JC. Our greatest weakness last year was outside shooting. DJ can shoot it and he has many talents - not just a shooter. Hope he gets in the regular rotation as he has good potential.
- Greg Hammond played 13 minutes. 2 points and 4 fouls. Plays tough defense. Easily 6’5”. Saw him at the football game. Hit 2-4 FTs, 0-2 on 3P’s. Good potential. Good athlete.
