Can we please stop talking about how Rhody plays good defense? Energy gets you only so far. Horrible at guarding ball screens. Umass has 15 FGs on 11 assists. 3 turnovers. X having a nice half, though. If you are going to take that many shots, might as well make 'em!

smoke and mirrors to have us down by 10
DH for life. he will win.. he is playing 3 vs 5 basketball for most of the half. cant win if you cant break 50.
Umass plays like us in baron ball years. That said, could be a long second half.

Who else is going to play? Bigby's there by default. We have 8 guys for this game. He only has this one year right?

the only way we have a chance of winning this game is extreme defense which I thought we did a terrible job of doing in the first half.....getting in the lane at will and we keep fouling instead of getting in position to take charges

For real, when you only have 9 players (8 tonight), everyone needs to play, even if their names are Ryan and Alwayne. It's just an unfortunate fact. Both will be gone next year, no worries.

UMass is playing well above their level tonight and appear to be on the way to an easy win. They are however a Jeckyl and Hyde type team and it would not surprise me at all to see a completely different game from them in Kingston with a different outcome. Their lack of discipline will bite them.

The only time the offense has clicked is when URI has taken shots early and not set upmth offense. Would like to see more of TJ

What was that?
What happens in the locker room at half time?
Do they spray ether, because every game lately, we
come out and stink for five minutes. They scored 13 straight points!
Usual horrid rebounding.
Munford a brilliant first half and an equally terrible second half.
Powell just couldn't do anything with Williams.
Mass is just a tough matchup for us.
Putrid shooting, crappy defense. EIGHT three point plays, the old way. Nine 3 pointers the new way.
We stay tough with VCU, Ohio State and Butler, and we get hammered by
ZooMass?
Go figure.

Re: Game #21: @ Massachusetts - GameDay!!
I agree, except for something Rod pointed out:
Most games this season, we've come out of the locker room to start the 2nd half, and stunk out the joint. That's something that JB's teams used to do a lot, and for some reason, Hurley's team, this year at least, does the same thing. Not just the holdovers from last year are involved either.
Is it coaching, or adjustments, or a mindset, that this team isn't ready to play for a few minutes starting the second half of games?
Now, before anybody goes crazy saying I'm down on Dan, I'm just pointing it out. It does make you wonder, just a little?

A question that I wanted to ask him and forgot, among the 3 zillion I
did ask.
We used to say that about Al Skinner, too.
"Keep Skinner out of the locker room at half time!"
I don't know why this comatose first few minutes on the
second half keeps happening, but it's really come back to
bite us, too many times.

Re: Game #21: @ Massachusetts - GameDay!!
Well Rod, ask him when you see him next time.
It's important. Since he's so open about things, hopefully he's got answers for us.
This can't happen starting next year, it will cost us games against better teams. Even during Baron's best seasons, too often we'd have a dry spell, usually early in the 2nd half, that would cost us. We'd catch up late, but run out of gas at the end.
The only guess I'll make right now, is that other teams' coaches see what we're doing well, and scheme to stop it during halftime. Since this teams' scoring options are so limited, we don't have anything to fall back on that works, so we struggle for a while. If we had more guys that could score, then opponents can't focus on just one or two guys coming out of halftime.
Does that sound good? I'm giving our coaches the benefit of the doubt right now. However, the one thing I do have an issue with, is the teams' lack of defensive intensity starting the 2nd half. That should NOT be happening, at all. That's on the coaches. Lack of scoring is one thing, but the thing that keeps us in games is our defense.

It's a question I would have a hard time asking Dan or Bobby.
But it needs to be asked.
If we can come out and play aggressive hard nosed defense to start games, why can't we do that to start the 2nd half, a key time in any game?
It sure can't be fatigue. They've just had 10-15 minutes of rest. The coaches have to get their players' minds back in the game, and fast.

Truepoint, it IS a trend. It's happened at least several times this year.
As for Duke, in that Miami game, they were routed in the 1st half. It was already over. The 2nd half was 20 minutes of garbage time.

I'm not sure staff knows why this keeps happening, because I think they'd
do something to change it.
It's like a pitcher who has trouble in the first inning, or Beckett in the sixth over and over.
Maybe the opponents spike the Gatoraid?

Rod, true. I'm sure they know what's going on.
Just that you would think they would try and stop it before they give up too many points. Like call time out and substitute someone out, if they're sleepwalking.
It may just be a case where Hurley knows it happening, but can't do much to stop it, don't have the horses, etc, like he's said many times this year.

First five minutes of second half, conference games (for some reason no play-by-play for Charlotte game): 8-2, 9-7, 4-8, 10-6, 7-9, 2-13, 2-10. The last two games clearly stand out, but it's not every game. It's not a mystery, this is not a good team. They are going to have stretches where they're dominated. It's so much more conspicuous when it's the start of a half. Awful night all around. The defense was so bad at the start that even the relatively calmer brother was yelling at people.

He did substitute. He took Nik and Malone out and put TJ and
Bigby in.
It's like a wave. You can see ti, but you can't stop it.
We had not existant frontline play. Eight "and ones"!
After the 21 all tie, we weren't in the game.

Re: Game #21: @ Massachusetts - GameDay!!
I'm just going to put this out there and I'm sure some will disagree: Jordan Hare is an important piece for Rhody. Would we have won last night had he played? No chance. But we certainly would have scored more than ten points in the paint. TEN! And it would have meant less minutes for Ryan "Five on Four" Brooks. Not saying Hare is the next Kareem, but he is our best big man, and he's certainly a factor on both ends of the floor.

Re: Game #21: @ Massachusetts - GameDay!!
We've gotten killed in the paint all year long, Jordan Hare or not. Helloooo? Fordham.
It's not as if he's some big space eater, keeping people out of the lane.
A couple of blocks don't constitute real defense.
A couple of dunks don't constitute offense, either. His five points
wouldn't have meant squat.
Everyone gets caught up in flash over substance.
UMass is a long team, and we just don't match up with them.
Plus our two existing bigmen, were no shows. Five rebounds and one point'in 37 minutes
is unacceptable.
Bigby with five and four in 16 minutes put them to shame.

I think UMass is a team that Jordan would have matched up particularly well with because they are a long team rather than a muscular team, and Jordan wouldn't have gotten bulled over like so often happens. He would not have helped us win the game, but I agree with Smarty in that it wouldn't have been as brutal. Especially agree with the aspect of it taking more minutes away from Brooks (at least with Jordan you need to worry about alley-oops and putbacks) and Aaman (who is possibly still not entirely recovered from his injuries).

Re: Game #21: @ Massachusetts - GameDay!!
Anyone who says Hare wouldn't have made a difference is just plain stupid and ignorant. Without him, we have two unathletic D3 level centers, literally just Brooks and Aaman who are both 6'8". You might as well slide Nik into playing center and get a shooter out there, seriously. Aaman has the basketball IQ but no athleticism and brooks is the opposite. UMass doesn't need a gameplan to guard either of those two, just play normal basketball. However, with Hare they need to account for the alley oop off pick and rolls and his athleticism both offensively and defensively. Especially when Hare is the ideal person to matchup against Putney.

It is what it is.....even with Jordan we still would have gotten beat in the paint area, I also think he would have picked up fouls quickly, trying to defend post and rebound thus fouling out early. The hard nose defense can only take us so far, and coupled with unfavorable matchups in size, speed, and offensive fire power, we can't overcome these. No offense in the paint(the usual)and nothing off the bench. It is gonna be a struggle to even beat our neighbors in the bottom A-10 and the rest of sked looks like, to me, we/ll have another clunker or two to finish out. I don't see us beating UMass at home..........

Maybe that was a little harsh and I apologize for that, but Rod you try to make it seem like not having Hare made NO difference at all. You keep saying all he would have done is got his couple of dunks in, couple of blocks, and that its all "flash" not substance. Well, this team has no damn substance this year anyways, and those "flashy" dunks and blocks is WAY more than any other big man on this team is doing. We will take any contributions we can get, and there is no doubt in my mind that Jordan could have contributed to this game in one way or another, win or lose. Don't make it seem like he is an irrelevant piece to this team.

Not irrelevant at all, but not enough to be a difference make, at least not
this year.
