Game #21: @ Massachusetts - GameDay!!
Massachusetts
14-6 (4-3)
February 6 7 P.M.
No TV
Mullins Center, Amherst Massachusetts
Umass has very much been an up and down team all year. They have lost the teams second leading scorer Jesse Morgan(13.4) for the year with a torn ACL. They have been Duquesne, La Salle, Richmond and Fordham, while losing to George Washington, Charlotte and Saint Louis. They have played tight games as we have as there average difference in conference games is 5 points so I expect another close one on Wednesday
Projected Starters
Chaz Williams 5’9” Junior Brooklyn, New York
Chaz is a transfer from Hofstra and one of the fastest men in the A-10. He leads the team in scoring at 15.9 a game while impressively dishing out 7 assists and grabbing 4.5 rebounds a game while logging a little over 36 minutes a game. He uses his speed to his advantage and is aggressive in attacking the basket, while he can hit open 3’s he much rather get in the paint and shoot floaters and pull up jumpers. Likely an all A-10 first or second guard will be a good challenge for Mike
Freddie Riley 6’5” Senior Ocala, Florida
Freddie averages 6.9 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1 assist. A good glue guy that is not great at anything but an important player. He averages about 25 minutes and will knock down the open 3. Interesting to see as a guard he shoots under 60% from the line so if it is close late definitely a candidate to foul.
Terrell Vinson 6’7” Senior Baltimore, Maryland
Former top 100 recruit averages 26 minutes of floor time and produces 11.9 points a game with 4.1 boards and .9 assists. Pretty physical forward who can put it on the floor but his physicality also ends up putting him in foul trouble in a good amount of games. Not much of a threat from outside unless left wide open but is effective slasher.
Raphael Putney 6’9” Junior Woodbridge, Virginia
Putney averages 24 minutes of play and is built like Jordan Hare only weighing 185 pounds though Putney is a much more perimeter oriented player. Scores it at 7.4 a game with 5 boards and 1.7 assists. Streaky shooter from 3 capable of going on run. This year his percentage is terrible but last year was a 38% 3 point shooter.
Sampson Carter 6’8” Junior Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Sampson is the guy underneath that does the dirty work down low. Averages 22 minutes and scores 5.9 points a game is 4.5 boards. He is physical and could be a problem for Jordan if he bangs down low. A matchup that I feel is good for Mike Aaman. He will shoot the 3 but is barely a 20 percent shooter from there.
Bench
Only 2 players really see significant time off the bench for Derek Kellog and they are 6’8” Maxi Esho and 6’10” 250 pound Cady Lalane. Maxi is more an athlete ala Lamont Ulmer while Cady is an under the hoop presence who will likely have a large impact on this game. Very tough matchup for URI with Lalane.

Re: Massachusetts Preview
they typically like to run and play an uptempo game compared to our slow half court game. Expect to see a press again but nowhere near the level of VCU. This umass teams reminds me a lot of the 20 win teams under CFL, lots of talent, some decent wins but nowhere near where they should be

Re: Massachusetts Preview
So if they're like a Baron team, they must lose to Rhody this time as the tables have turned. It's February, after all.

Re: Massachusetts Preview
Should be a "free" stream available, since UMass is offering this in their ALL Access pay-per-view package.

Surprised Putney isn't doing better this year. He looked real good at the Ryan Center last year. Maybe he was just on one of his streaks, but if I recall he could handle well for a big man, and drive as well as shoot the three.

here's a possible link for streaming the game: http://apps.ohlulz.com/ncaa/?lulz=rtmp: ... skbl@32077
I wouldn't be surprised to see firstrow have a link as well that would be the same thing

UMass plays a physical game much like Charlotte does and you know how Charlotte manhandled the Rams on the boards. Rhody must find a way to offset this UMass strength by showing good shot selection and having a good shooting night especially from the perimeter.

They need a rebounding effort similar to the first part of butler, Umass definitely has size on its side

Re: UMass Line
I do not think Hare can guard Putney on the perimeter right now. he needs to be able to move his feet better.

Re: UMass Line
Jordans quick enough on his feet and I don't think Putney will get the ball on the outside and beat him on the dribble, because i can't ever remember him dribbling well. Kinda like OO last year with outside shots. He's just gotta contest the jumper off a pass and other than that they are just twigs out there.
I think a good question is on pick & rolls will we hedge hard tonight? Chaz is damn quick and if Putney can pop off the roll and hit the jumper than its probably best not to

Re: Game #21: @ Massachusetts - GameDay!!
UMass really plays a fun style of basketball, which would be dangerous as hell if they were at all disciplined.
Or I guess, they'd be VCU with a focus on offense rather than defense.

So at least it seems like the Rhody shooters have a good feel for the basket and are able to hit a variety of shots.
