A10 Tournament: Rd 1 vs Umass - Thu March 13, 9pm CSN/A10

Unread post by rhodyrudder »

11 seed is locked in.
Opponent will be the 6 seed, UMass.
Last game of the day.
I don't see it listed on NBCSN, but it might show up?
Answers later, I'm sure.

Edit: allegedly on comcast sports new england and sny.
I remember when rhody was always getting bumped off
sportschannel (?) for the celtics, who inevitably had a game
at the same time the rams were playing in the a-10 tourney.

My initial reaction was to hope for Dayton.

But umass is a rival and we have played them close. It's hard to beat the same team 3 times.

I think we are getting better at playing them more than they are getting better at playing us.

It's moderate march excitement, but it's still march and exciting.

We have a much better chance at winning vs,. Dayton.
Don't understand why anyone wants to play UMass, when
Dayton is a far better matchup.
We blew Dayton out at home and narrowly lost to them at
Dayton.
I don't care about us winning over Dayton would hurt the A-10.
This is my team, and wins are all that matter.

URI is capable of beating any team in the A10 on a given night. URI is capable of losing to any team in the A10 on a given night.

Dayton has quality depth that can wear down URI. UMASS is better than than Dayton to my eyes.

Think BIG:
Beat UMASS Thursday at 9pm
Beat George Washington Friday at 9pm
Beat VCU Saturday at 4pm
Beat Saint Louis Sunday at 1pm

Fact is that URI won 3 of our last 4 games with the loss being @ UMASS by only 3 points. How many A10 Teams won 3 of their last 4 games?? Not many.
Fast is that URI has two Freshmen in EC Mathews and Hassan Martin who are no longer Freshmen. These two guys have improved by leaps and bounds more than any two players in the entire league. They are playing like Sophmores already.
Biruta could step up big time in these next 4 games
Munford may make one of the 3 All A10 Teams but it he does not he will most definitely be out to prove all the Coaches wrong. He could come into this A10 Tournament with a chip on his shoulder and really excel and lead this team to the A10 title. He could get the MVP.
TJ Buchanan is really exhibiting leadership and clearly establishing himself as the Captain of next year's team. Just came off his best game ever as a URI Ram!!!!!!!!!!!
Minnis could provide valuable minutes.
Jarelle playing better off the bench - will need valuable contributions from him.
I do not think it is out of the question that URI could shock the College Basketball World and advance to the A10 Final 4 or better. This teamis dangerous right now. Opposing Coaches will not want to be facing us. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

There I said it.

Winning three games has its challenges. Overcoming two previous losses can happen and it did today in the America East semis as Albany stunned Vermont to advance to the championship round being held on Albany's home court. Vermont had won both regular season games against Albany - the first a 30 point rout in Burlington and later a 10 point win at Albany. GO RHODY!

We have to be realistic going into this tournament. Sure, we are riding somewhat of a hot streak. We have won our last two games, 3 of our last four, and our last two losses have been by 3 points each. We are definitely riding some momentum and no doubt the players feel good about themselves heading into Brooklyn. But we didn't get any help from our bracket, as we are on a path to play two teams who have done nothing but beat us in recent years. I don't need to remind everyone of the nightmares that UMass has gave us throughout the years, but we are winless in our last 5 attempts against the Minutemen. They boast a top 5 PG in the country and they are tourney bound. If we get by UMass we get to face GW, who has also quietly owned us in recent years. We haven't beaten them in five seasons. This past years loss felt like the most lopsided game of the conference schedule, even though it only resulted in a 13 point loss.

I want the win against UMass. That'll be enough to build on in the offseason and give Dan and the team some momentum going into next year, especially if UMass makes a small tourney run. Give me that W and I'll be happy and would consider the A-10 tourney a success and an important building block. If we beat them, then I truly believe everything after that will be playing with house money.

It's been three years since our last postseason of any kind.
When was Rhody's last win in the A-10's, and where was it?
I know they won at least one game in the CBI in '11,
and 3 games in the '10 NIT.

Beat miami, ohio in cbi, and slu in a-10 first rounds, both in kingston, in '11.
Lost to richmond in quarters in ac, and at central fla. in cbi.

Interesting note on the miami game, delroy allegedly got the first triple-double in school history?
That can't possibly be right, can it? Silk, tommy, sly, lamar, tyson, etc. never had one?

I get SNY luckily, so I think I'll be covered. On my guide though it shows the game starting at 6:30pm (Pacific Time) which is a little weird. Hopefully they don't skip the first 30 minutes. Might just be a mistake.

Although these tourney games tend to run late anyway.

Guys,

I like our seed. We play Umass and I really think we have a very good shot at winning this one. The we get a date with GW - who kicked our ass in the first half and we competed and won in second half. We can beat them. If we were the 10 and win the first we would have VCU.

I feel good about our chances

If we get by UMass, which I think is doable, playing GW with a healthy Savage is a daunting task.

Will he be though? Anyway, that's why they play the games!

I agree. I like our seed as well. UMASS and GW are both beatable teams. Once we beat them VCU and St Louis are top teams you will have to beat anyway but much better to get them both later on after 2 games. Why I like our chances??
- We are on a neutral court
- We should have very good quality referees - no "home cooking"
- We won 3 of our last 4 games - how many teams did that?
- We destroyed Richmond
- We beat Fordham handily with some outstanding performances
- Posters have stopped with the "we have no point guard" talk - just look at what our guards EC and TJ did against Fordham:
---EC: 6-16fg, 7-8ft, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 21 points
---TJ: 5-6fg, 3-6ft, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 14 pts - only 3 assists short of a triple double
---X: 7-14fg, 3-7ft, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 21 points
- That is an amazing 25 rebounds from our starting guard play. Plus 15 assists from this trio.
- We are moving the ball by passing more, and breaking the press much better
- VCU presents a huge challenge with their vaunted defense but it would be great to get to that point in the tournament and anybody can get hot at that point

Look at our 2nd to last game when we whipped

truism ace...experienced and a bunch of long, athletic guys. not the best outside shooting team, will try to beat us with physicality and excellent PG play. best player after Chazz is prob the backup PG, Tre Davis. but their length, strength and athleticism can be menacing. have to hope they play dumb (very capable of that), are off from the perimeter and that we can hang in there on the boards.

EC averaged 19 ppg against them this year. i think he will be the first thing they try to take away, naturally, at this point. can X be the X factor now that he is not the #1 focus of the other team?....Gil has to bring an A game, Hassan playing against men 5 years older than him and bigger, he will still hold his own no doubt.

Sure they are beatable, but to that extent so is any team in the country this year besides wichita state. I would still have rather drawn Richmond/Dayton and St Joes - who IMO are more beatable. We got the toughest road possible, but that makes it even more impressive if we make any noise.

Our guards had to rebound, our front line disappeared [except Hassan of course].

We won't have that luxury against UMass and GW. Our bigs HAVE to play well to have a chance. Gil?

If we get to VCU, that's 3 games in 3 days, and with their defense, that's tough.

Maybe VCU could lose Friday, just to help us out. They don't need to win the tourney anyway.

Just because our guards "had" to rebound as you say does not mean they have always rebounded like this. TJ was incredible grabbing 11 rebounds. Martin had 12 rebounds, Gill unfortunately got 5 fouls in only 13 minutes of play nad got 5 rebounds.
We outrebounded Fordham 45-35. Rebounding has not been our strength for the year but some very good signs over the past 5 games appearing.

I was curious to see how off I was on the age thing. I know prep school, redshirting, and all that affects ages, but UMASS seems like an exceptionally old college team.

Chaz Williams: 4/6/91
Cady Lalanne: 4/22/92
Sampson Carter: 9/11/90
Raphiael Putney: 4/21/90
Derrick Gordon: 12/12/91
Trey Davis: 5/26/93
Maxie Esho: 2/28/91

Meanwhile, Rhode Island is over here being led by guys who turned 18 this season.

If we were the 10th seed instead of the 11th we would have 7 seed Richmond first game and then have the 2 seed VCU in the next game. I think I would prefer 6 seed UMASS then play 3 seed GW then face 2 seed VCU in the final 4.

If we were to prefer the 10th seed we really have to look back at the horrible home court 12 point loss we had to a terrible Duquense program. They would up tied with us with 4 wins but we lost the tie breaker since they beat us. I was afraid that Duquesne loss would come back and haunt us.

Another option would have been to be the 12th seed which would have put us in the PIG vs Fordham, with the winner to play 5 seed Dayton and then on to 4 seed St Joe.
