X and 1000 points.

Unread post by Billyboy78 »

If my math is correct, he only needs to average 14.3 points in the last 10 games to reach 1000...pretty amazing for a two year career.

I'm always happy we have X.
He's a guy many of us will always remember, as a
cornerstone on Hurley's first teams.

Wasn't this X's senior year? They list 8 players, and he isn't one of them.

Back when, 1,000 points was a benchmark.
Players didn't play as freshmen. No 3 point rule to pad stats.
Schools played a standard 26 game schedule.
And yet, Pete Maravich scored 3,667 points in
3 years with no 3 point rule. If he had a 3 point rule, he'd have averaged 57 points a game!
But, I digress. I hope X gets to 1,000 so he'll be part of the 1,000 point
club and he'll live on in the book of URI scorers.

It must be noted that Maravich's coach at LSU was his dad and Pete shot on almost every possession. But Pete was also a great player, and possibly the most fun to watch of any player I've seen.

Nobody ever heard of LSU basketball, except for Bob Pettit.
Pete shot 44%, which considering some of the shots he took, was
pretty good. He also averaged 6.5 rebounds a game and 5.1 assists a game,
so he did other things besides scoring.
In the NBA, he scored a ton of points, but his passing was other worldly at times.
The only time he played with a 3 point line was his final year in the NBA. What did he do?
66.7% from 3!!!!
I remember a game against Kentucky, where Dan Issell scored 51 points and another KY player
scored 43. Nobody remembers those incredible feats, because Maravich
scored 68 points.
He didn't have much help at LSU, and what he did, despite every team being
able to double and triple team him, was remarkable.

Thank you for posting that, Billyboy!
It just reinforces my memories of The Pistol.
Just magical!
He scored those 68 points in MSG against
Walt Frazier, widely regarded as the best defensive guard of
his era.
I was puzzled as to why they said Carmelo's 62 points was the record,
when Maravich scored 68 without a 3 point line?

If he stays healthy, he'll get there, no problem.

My guess is, he will average close to 20 a game from here on out.

90% of our points [and minutes] are going to come from the starting 5.

I checked and Pistol was playing at home, not MSG.
My error.
As for X, take out his November lousy stats, while he was injured,
and he's had quiet a season.
Since 2014 began, he's averaging 19.8 ppg, and all his stats have greatly improved.

2012-13 he scored 504 pts, 2013-14 353 pts. good for a 857 total. This season he is averaging 16.8 ppg. If he keeps his avg ppg he will have another 168 + 857= 1025 points!

Back in the mid-80s the NBA held a legends game at All-Star Weekend. In one game someone threw an outlet to Maravich. Off the dribble Maravich underhanded a bullet to John Havlicek, who was about 40 feet ahead of the play -- still the most incredible pass I've ever seen.

Havicek said that Maravich was the greatest ballhandler in basketball history.
You watch that tape, and who can argue? He was so creative on the fly.
Never saw anyone improvise like Pete did.
