hell of a win for Dayton in Buffalo over Cuse

St Joe's gave UConn a much better game than the blue blood of the NBE, mighty Villanova. They were soft all year, and went out with a whimper.

It's down to Creighton, a newcomer, to be the only NBE school
to make the Sweet 16.
Baylor is a big, athletic team. Creighton is a terrible rebounding team.
Probably another big game from McDermott and a loss for the Blue Jays.
That would give the NBE, the big goose egg for 2014.

It's funny, looking back our most complete performance of the year was probably at home against Dayton. We scored 88 points and lead wire to wire I believe. Now they are amongst the last 16 standing. Shows you how much luck and mettle play into a season. For all those in the "sky is falling camp" please relax, we are not that far away. For all those crapping on the A-10, here's the middle finger to your "we are a deep conference" -- our worst seeded team went the furthest.

But oh yeah, I forgot, St Johns would run us off the court. :)

What a great win for Dayton and the league. Best passing I've seen all year. Miller really has them ready. Cheering for f...n' Stanford (for the first time in 14 years).
I'm really going to miss them when the join the new -and- not- improved big east next year, along with WSU, Gonzaga, Kansas, Arizona, Mich. St. and Harvard.

Remember all year, I've said, the way to bust a zone defense
is to put a big man at the foul line and flow the offense through
that player.
This leads to dump downs low and kick outs to 3 point shooters.
It's not rocket science. It's how it's been done for ages.
Dayton and Miller did this offense, textbook style, and it worked
against the most vaunted zone in college ball.
We could have done that with Gil. His best strength is passing.
Instead, against a zone, we revert to CFL style passing around the
perimeter looking for a shot.

Rod, I think we will run that kind of offense against a zone more next year, when we have more big bodies and more depth.

Yes, we had Gil who's a good passer, but other than Hassan, we had no one down low to pass to. The Big O just wasn't ready. And Hassan's offensive game isn't polished enough yet.

Most of the time we didn't have 3 bigs in the game at the same time either. Just wasn't workable.

If we don't see Dan do that more next season, then I'll start to wonder.

but the guy at the foul line has to be able to knock down that 15 footer and be a good decision maker. not sure Gil meets either criteria.

in fact at times we used TJ in that role, not ideal to put a 6'3" guy in that position, but he did make some nice passes against zones from that spot. Hassan would be the guy you would want to put there, but his passing would need to improve. That position becomes a triple threat, drop it down low to Gil, hit the foul line jumper, or take the guy off the dribble and attack the rim.

Cutters to the basket don't have to be bigs. We ran
X to the basket several times last year. They just have to be
smart enough that if they don't have a shot, to pass it out.
Gil's passing is outstanding, and he can hit a little jumper.
We're not talking a 3 point shot here.
Hurley used Gil as his de facto point guard against VCU in the first half
of our game with them. Why not try him at the high post against a zone?
We couldn't be any worse than we were, aimlessly passing the ball
around.
I saw Dave Gavitt use 5'10" Skip Hayes at the high post one game,
and it destroyed the opponent's zone.
Doing something is better than the status quo.

Great discussion.
I agree with Gil being at the high post. He's a great passer in the paint. You can't teach that. I'd rather free Hassan up to be around the basket. That's where he's most effective.
Besides, maybe being away from the basket may help to keep Gil in the game longer.

Making free throws and getting a whistle on every drive usually leads to victory.
Hated the result, but, at least ESPN will have something to cream about all week.

Kentucky lived at the free throw line in the second half.
WSU kid gets decked right in front of the ref...no call.
How hard were those announcers rooting for Kentucky?
Best game of the year, otherwise.
Glad to see ISU take UNC, even without Georges Niang.
What a great tournament!

ACC still has their true best team left in UVA. Most consistent and by far the best defensive team in their conference all year. Expect a grinder tonight against Memphis.

It really seems strange, when some teams have their players drive the lane, get knocked to the floor, and there's no call.

Other teams do it, and there's a call every time, even when there's almost no contact.

Kentucky got that tonight. I give them credit, they shot the ball way better than they usually do, but the one sidedness is obvious.

The NCAA wanted to get rid of Wichita State. They got their wish.

Happy about Iowa State, but too bad about Niang. With him, I thought they had a chance to get to the FF. Now, UConn catches a break, as usual.

Awful game by Creighton.
I love McDermott, and just don't get his teammates not looking for him,
and gunning themselves. Yeah, I want Grant Gibbs taking the shots.
I've seen them do this before, but there's no team like Baylor in the
NBE.
If the Jays can come back, it will be a miracle.

Rod, Creighton is a fraud. One man team. If McD doesn't score 40, they are done.

Baylor is GOOD. They are on a roll. FF is a possibility.

The entire BE is a fraud. PC, at the end, was their best team, thanks to Cotton. That's not saying much.

I think Dayton will beat Stanford. Then they will be eaten alive by Florida.

A10 1, NBE 0.

Not sure about Virginia. Wouldn't bet the house on them.

Ugh! This Chatman looks at McDermott, and
dribbles until McDermott is covered, instead of giving him the ball.
They aren't trying to get him the ball in transition, either.
Gibbs keeps shooting, though.

That's their strategy. They figure the opponents are going to try and stop McDermott, so the other guys are going to help carry the load.

Except that the other guys suck.

Equals=loss. Badly.

If I were to coach against PC and UConn, wouldn't I try to stop Cotton and Napier?

They carry their teams. The rest aren't very good. [Well, maybe Henton, but I digress]

creighton's problem has always been live/die by the 3. teams like that can either roll through march or get humiliated (see tonight).most of their offensive sets have 5 guys hovering the arc.

villanova on the other hand looked nothing like the team they had been all year. i don't know what jay wright's problem was.

i actually think PC is good, prob the best team in their conference in hingsight. i said at the beginning of the year that they will finish top 3-4 and that was with Dunn. its their fans and their conference that have an over inflated sense of self. regardless what they say, for the BE this year was basically a disaster. they are the pun of jokes in the media, the coach of one of their marquee programs just bolted for a lesser job, they had 2 teams squarely in the tourney, 1 team in the final four in and 1 team that supposedly needed to win the conf tourney to qualify. and now they are all home for the spring. PC can and should be optimistic about the future, but I will stick to my belief that I see no reason why the BE is not neck and neck with the A10 in the years to come.

the funniest part is the A10 team that got dogged the most on the PC board leading up the selections was dayton, probably because not one of their ignorant fans ever saw them play to see a bunch of athletes who can shoot the rock and play good D. but they dont have the BE patch on their chest, so they must suck.

Creighton's problem is not living and dying by the 3, its living and dying by Doug McDermott. That is why next year they will die, to the basement of the BE. Wragge, Gibbs, etc it all feeds off Doug drawing double and triple teams. There are a lot of guys that can hit wide open threes at a high rate. They are overmatched against the 6th best team in the Big 12.

Villanova is the best BE team. The way they handled prov at VU was unreal. But man the big east is bad. X loses in play in round. PC loses after choking badly, st johns gets steam rolled in NIT by Robert morris Vill gets upset, creighton gets steam rolled and no one else was good enough.

PC was the best team IMO. Nova is soft to me, Arcidiacono is so overrated. Small up front. Pinkston is a beast, and they have some shooters, but not a complete team.

PC should be happy. If Dunn comes back and plays at a high level, they will be in contention to win the league title next year.

Champs of a weak league. It will be interesting to see how much respect they [the BE] gets from the NCAA selection committee next year.

They had better win some OOC road games against good competition next year, or they will be lucky to get more than 2-3 teams in.

In comparison, the A10 will get 4-5 in. VCU, GW, and Dayton will be the class of the league. Us, UMass, and a couple others won't be far behind.

Lol wouldn't be the first time Ace :)

I think GW, Dayton and VCU will be shoo ins for the tourney next year. We have to be in that next group, likely with Umass, Richmond and 1-2 other teams.

I think 4 is a realistic forecast for bids next year. I dont see 6 being the norm, and that's ok.

Bubblelicious? We will be top 75 ourselves.

Would like to say we'll be better than that. Same for you guys.

Seriously though, if you're not top 50 next year, your conference ain't getting many in the Dance.

And it looks that way, recruits or no recruits.

As for 17 top 100's, that number is going down, down, down......how many is Marquette going to lose in the next few weeks, for starters?
