Sounds like we need a piggy bank at the North Lobby of the Ryan Center for such occasions.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I know we'd all prefer 4 year guys, but maybe this is part of why there's been so many transfers along with how depleted the roster he took over was. I can see someone that's been through the recruiting battles and then gone to a school and become disallusioned finding Dan's rumored attitude refreshing. Once you've been lied to honesty becomes a lot more appealing than more pie in the sky recruiting pitches. And with how much transfering continues to become a huge part of the game this can only help us.rhodyrob wrote:I have heard that Dan is not a closer. He is too honest and straight with the recruits. He also doesn't spend the time stroking the recruits- spending little time during the season visiting and talking compared to the guy North of us.

While the staff is not being forthcoming with a lot of names I am hearing that they feel pretty good about where they stand with players they like very much. ( I think u can read a lot into Dan's comments lately about "dynamic" point guards vs. players who just run the offense.)
Also, Murray's connections could come into play on a transfer.

That's the most hopeful thing I've read on this board in a long time, especially coming from you, Iggy. Let's hope it translates into a successful spring signing period.Iggy1979 wrote:While the staff is not being forthcoming with a lot of names I am hearing that they feel pretty good about where they stand with players they like very much. Dan used the "dynamic" word last night with his general high level overview of recruiting status. Also mentioned Grad-Transfers and JUCOs as they are considering all options to get the right kind of talent and competitor needed to compliment Hass, EC and Biruta next year.

Murray has the New England ties. That's why I assumed he was the one recruiting Jarvis Garrett. But it seems Preston is the one on Garrett.

Oh, I agree. I like what I've seen of him on film. He's a little small, about Powell's size. But, he's a true point guard, which Powell was not. Despite losing X, I still think PG is our biggest and most crucia;l need.rambone 78 wrote:Don't care who's responsible.

Absolutely, BB. A good PG makes everybody better.
If we get a shooter, but no PG, then we're that rudderless ship we all talk about.

He's a couple of inches shorter than Preston, who was listed at 6'1",
if I remember right.
Jiggy, Tyson and Silk were around 5'10. If Garrett has quickness and speed,
he can get the job done.
Powell was not fast or that quick to compensate for his size.

Makes sense big time. Get Gustys and Garrett for center and PG. 4 year players.
Get Cochran for 2015-16. Sign him next fall, as Rod said.
If this all happens, I think we'd be a happy bunch.

Hurley -- 'Because of where this conference is at, one or two recruiting classes won't get it done.' (Recruits) want to hear that it's a great atmosphere. A win against UMass will bring fans back to other games. If we had beat PC fan support would be more this year, just how are fanbase is right now . We aren't (as a whole not the people on this board) investing too much time in the team until they prove it. Dayton was an ok win, but we have no top 50 RPI wins in 6 or so tries.

But the students are the key. They might show up, but if they just sit on their asses and play with the phones, what good is that? Dan talks about "atmosphere". For some reason, URI students don't seem to give a crap about basketball.rhodylaw wrote:A win against UMass will bring fans back to other games. This is nothing new with the students - ever since the internet was made available to the public kids have other things to do. What they do not understand is that they are missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the student section and act stupid and it's ok. Man I miss that.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
A little success will go a long way. Many schools have student problems as far as showing up. Most games on TV are exactly that, games between 2 teams that care about each other or 1 team that is a top program.
The university of Miami gives the frats tailgating food and gear before every home football game. If you have to bribe them it is ok. Figure out what the incentive is and give it.
Nick Saban has been critical of Alabama's fans and student body not showing up for lesser opponents. The problem is everywhere.
I know when I was a student 05-09 the Ryan center really changed and became a no fun zone. 05 was great, heckling is part of the game and yelling, it shouldnt be frowned on.

Here is what I hope for in recruiting.. Would love to see us get back to being the running rams... Able to press full court and come up with some transition baskets. Want to get away from the plodding half court game and become more athletic.. Let's get athletes with some ability.. If these kids are that type of talent I am all in.. Will we really get them?? Not sold until their name is on dotted line.. The ability to play more exciting basketball and win some games will lead to increased interest.. We are never going to be national champs but we can provide more entertainment with players that can play up tempo.. Matthews and Martin appear to be good starts to this goal.. Let's keep it going..

Can't go up tempo without rebounding and'outlet passing.
Watch a tape of Bill Walton ripping down a rebound and almost in one motion,
zipping the ball to a guard, for a fast break.
No Bill Waltons these days, but the principle is the same.

I'd give it a B+, for sure.
Only problem I see is, there doesn't seem a backup plan if
Garrett goes to Marquette.
I wish we were involved with Tarin Smith of St. Anthony's.

Love is a throwback rebounder, for sure.
He's the best player most casual fans never heard of.
He's not flashy, and ESPN doesn't play him up like their faves.
He's a far better player than Blake Griffin, but he doesn't do
posterizing dunks, like Griffin, and isn't on Sports Center Top 10
every night. Flash seems more important than substance.
Love is starting to get some endorsements.
If he played in NYC or LA, he'd be immortalized.

Hurley doesn't want to go into the April signing period with three holes to fill. Too many balls in the air. The staff is trying to get a verbal from a guard or wing. that's another reason the Garrett thing hurt -- a verbal from him and the staff wouldn't have to spend time chasing other PGs.
