Rambone,
Maybe after four years of Marine boot camp under Bob Sr., they'd
be less likely to want four more years of the same under Dan?

Maybe, maybe not. At least we would know what we're getting. And that's good players that fit Dan's system.
Anyway, don't you agree the staff needs to focus on getting 4 year recruits in here, and skip the part timers?

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
Hell, yes.
I'm not a fan of transfers.
I understand why Dan did it, because unlike when Tom Penders took over a well stocked, but badly coached team,
Hurley inherited nothing. Two guys he counted on for major input, left before he coached a single game.
However, going forward, using transfer like Al Skinner did, to plug holes and fill a need
rather than fill a roster, is the best approach.
If they can get a guy like Murphy or a post grad transfer, there's not much downside to it.

Agree, but this team has a lot of holes.
For next season, I could see another part timer, but starting in 2015-16, we need to go all in on 4 year players.
Dan's tenure here could possibly be judged by that class. Need some serious talent coming in, at all positions.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
Agree, 100%.
You might see a juco SG come in to relieve the shooting/scoring problem
they'll face.
Once Hare leaves (assuming he does), will give us two scholarships.
Now, they can use one and save the other for what staff regards as a far better
recruiting class, or use both.
If I had to bet, I'd say they save one, and maybe use it on a post grad transfer,
which still gives them the scholarship for 2015 recruiting class.

I'll tell you what, Rod. You know what would relieve some of the stress we've had with these games lately?
Some good recruiting news for next season.
2015-16 shapes up as huge. I know the staff is laying the groundwork for a big recruiting haul, but nothing is certain, as we've already seen. Maybe next fall we get some verbals for then, as we did with EC and Hassan. Try and get commits before the rest of the world knows how good they might be, so to speak, as we did with them.

- See more at: http://hoopdreamsmag.com/?p=8143#sthash.eOcJ42eO.dpufJarvis Garrett (Notre Dame Prep) a 6'0 PG can fill up a stat sheet in a quickness. After a slow first half matched up against Trae Bell Hayes, in a win Garrett exploded in the second half (18pts) to help lead Notre Dame Prep past Bill Crothers 74-60 Friday evening. Saturday Garrett picked up right where he had left off, putting on a clinic going 9-13 from three to finish the game with a tournament high 42pts and dishing out 12ast. Garrett is by far one of the best available senior point guards left in the country.

Maybe the recruitment if this kid was what put MP over the edge - sounds like he is MP but with more experience as a PG and a better shot

Let's not forget that Mike didn't play last 2 games - coach's decision. Don't assume this was Mikes decision alone.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
Typically, I believe that a person's wingspan is equivalent to their height. If someone is described as long, it normally means that their arms are longer than their listed height. A good URI example was probably Marcel Momplaisir, who seemed like he had arms like an octopus, but was only about 6'9". In the NBA, Rondo is 6'1" or 6'2", but has the wingspan of a player that's 6'10"ish, which is part of the reason why he's so adept at getting steals.Seawrightspostgame wrote:(((Shakes head))) got it.

I want this guy. After last nights game, it's clear we need a young PG we can work with. This would be a good grab, some say he's the best PG left. Maybe he sees the talent he can work with and will choose us!

We need a floor general in the worst way. Somebody who can shoot AND pass. Run the half court offense.
A difference maker, between having a good team and a great team.
Makes everybody else better.
Another Silk or Tyson would be nice.

Silk or Tyson? Not asking for much, right?
I'd take a Carlos Easterling at this point.
Not seeing EC as a PG. His handle isn't good enough, and the
team needs his scoring, which without X, will be
amplified, next season.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
Right. Backcourt depth and ball handling is a big problem as it stands right now going into next year. Pure PGs are really going the way of the dodo bird, anyway. Fewer and fewer set plays. More motion, more two man game, etc. Need two combo guards. Or, a combo guard and a pure SG. God forbid an injury or a transfer. And those never happen in D1 hoops!rodfromcranston wrote:Silk or Tyson? Not asking for much, right?

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
Any great PG has to be an offensive threat, thus a scoring option. If he isn't a threat to knock down a 3 and penetrate the lane then he will never be a prolific facilitator of the offense. I dont think you can have PG by committee, regardless of me agreeing that 2-3 combo guards is the way to go, you definitely need someone to run offense, facilitate, get you buckets when you need them, get fouled down the stretch and be a coach on the floor. All our great teams had great PGs and I bet our next great team will too. Just not sure who yet, seen so many average ones lately you forget what great looks like!!!!!

I loved Bobby when I was little and he was playing for those Duke teams. Although, I was like 10 years old and now I'm almost old enough to be the father of the high school kids we are recruiting. All they know about Bobby is what Bobby tells them. I think people here have greatly overstated Bobby's "celebrity" factor in recruiting (although maybe not his coaching impact; I really can't speak to that).

All they have to do is roll out the show on NBA network about the
back to back Duke champions.
Better yet, the Dream Team film, where Bobby was part of the only team
to beat the Dream Team.
He's a former All-American and a first round NBA draft pick. The NCAA's all time assist leader.
He's been described to me, as "the closer" on recruiting.
I don't believe in coincidence, that our recruiting is so different this year,
from the last.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
Exactly. That's actually the more pertinent point. One recruiting class is s small sample size but the quality and quantity is way down and there is one missing element. Tough not to make that connection. Guy got a three star PG to go from Wisconsin to Buffalo. I mean, it's Buffalo.rodfromcranston wrote:All they have to do is roll out the show on NBA network about the

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
The other factor is, how much did he balance Dan out?
Remember, Bobby was the big brother, who Dan looked up to.
His opinions must've held more weight than anyone else on the staff.
There's nobody now, who can say, "No, I think you're wrong. Maybe we should
do it this way, instead", and have the impact of your older brother saying it to you.
Bobby's personality was far more laid back, less shoot first, ask questions later.
As I've said, it will be interesting to see who has the more successful career in coaching.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
If they get Garrett all this angst goes away. he would have been a very good spring singing. And now he's THE best PG left. Dan is a very determined recruiter and he has a couple of assistants with good reps in recruiting. I'm not going to judge this year's recruiting class when there's still up to 3 scholarships left to fill.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)
Putting all our eggs in one basket, turned out to be an unwise move.
OSU has deep pockets and can funnel cash to players in many ways.
Boosters providing bogus jobs, is one way.
We can't compete with BCS schools in this manner.
VCU proves you can win with 3 star players, if you coach them right.
and evaluate them correctly in the first place.
Remember this. Few schools recruited Doug McDermott. He was all set to go to
Northern Iowa or someplace, when his father got the Creighton job.
The old man knew how good his son was, and the rest is history.
While it's harder today to find players that go under the radar, it still happens.
