Hopefully there will be a few more fannies in the seats, although I doubt it with students still on break. Looking for an up tick in intensity coming off win against LSU and the opening league schedule. Gil cannot take any steps backwards. I see us hanging around to be in go ahead position inside five minutes.

A close game? I really hope so. St. Louis historically has had problems at the Ryan Center even when they have had better teams. and the Rams also beat them at St.Louis last season. Let's hope the trend continues. Have to have a good first half again.

Key will be for URI to improve its ball hand doing and minimize the turnovers and opponents stealing the ball. The amount of lost possessions in the LSU game was a big negative and was critical to letting the Tigers back in game.

Re: Game #16: St Louis - Tuesday Jan 7 @ 7pm ET
I am not very concerned about having problems with a full court press like we had at LSU. St Louis is not close to the athleticism that LSU showed on Saturday. Their guards are good defensively but the front courts are quite different when it comes to height, speed and athleticism. If we get a little aggressive we may actually get some lay ups once we break their press if they try to press us like LSU.

The main ingredient of the recipe for success for this game and all the way to Brooklyn, is Gil, Iffy, all others staying out of foul trouble with the lack of depth. Second, shoot above their average free throws.

As long as it's just Onyekaba, Biruta, and Martin, I think the foul trouble concern can be cut and pasted into every game thread.
Teams do not score very much against Saint Louis- they are very strong defensively. I'm interested in seeing how the offense works in this one.

Re: Game #16: St Louis - Tuesday Jan 7 @ 7pm ET
Some input on Saint Louis U.
• Record 13-2, riding a six game win streak. Their two losses were to Wisconsin on a neutral site and loss at home to Wichita State.
• Their SOS is higher than URI, but that figure can be deceiving. For example, they played only four true road games with the toughest opponent being Vanderbilt. Contrast that with URI who played six road games where the weakest foe was Brown.
• Saint Louis also played nine home games to URI’s eight and, ex Wichita State, none came to a level equal to PC or Southern Miss.
• Consistently good defensive team.
• KenPom shows SLU has the second best efficiency in nation.
• Have done a great job in win streak to limit opponents' 3-point shooting, only one of their last six opponents has shot treys above 30%.
• Inconsistent offensively – good versus Yale, not so great versus Vanderbilt.
• Important to keep SLU in a half court offense. If they get runouts on turnovers/steals they will burn us. Talk to Vanderbilt about that one.
• Controlling the boards will be key for Rams. Important to get 2nd chance points, you not only score, you also demoralize the opponent.
• SLU attempts lots of 3-pointers. They have four players who have made 54 or more attempts. Even Rob Loe, their 6-11 C/F took 55 shots. Loe tends to get into foul trouble.
• Their starting five all score above 8 ppg game. Dwayne Evans is the leading scorer at 14.9. Team scoring stands at 71.3.
• Bench strength is fairly good. In close contests like Vanderbilt, most of the starters played 30+ minutes.
Likely Starters

All 5 starters are seniors. Don't see that often.
I expect to see a grind it out game. Less turnovers, make FT's, and this is winnable.

Outside of their obvious edge in experience nothing scares me about SLU. Keys for us will be limiting turnovers, getting good shots on offense, and defending the perimeter. Munford and Matthews should be too quick for Jett and McCall, would seem to be an advantage for us.

To me, that's the real Rhody Ram mascot.
The white Ram was based on the Frank Lanning cartoons.
No idea where they got the present Lion King Ram concept from.

There's an older guy who goes to all the home games, think his name is Dave. He usually has a light blue sweatshirt from the 70s. Was he a professor? Anybody know who I'm talking about? Rod's pic reminded me of him for some reason, but his shirt just says RHODE ISLAND.

I'd like us to keep up the intensity down low. This isn't the front line LSU had, so we should be able to use our bodies and (theoretically) win the battle on the glass.
I'd like to see X take less than 5 3's (unless he hits em).
I'd like to see us turn the ball over less than 10 times.
I also wouldn't mind seeing us shoot at least 75% from the line.
It's funny - i'd have asked for the same thing last game, but we didn't do any of that and still beat a good team on the road.
Screw it, just win boys.

I think a big factor in why we were able to stay out of foul trouble against LSU is that they were so much bigger than us. I think it's human nature for it not to look like a smaller guy is beating up a bigger guy. For that reason, I'm a little worried about ability to stay out of foul trouble against teams that don't outsize us the same way LSU did. Hope I'm wrong.

Re: Game #16: St Louis - Tuesday Jan 7 @ 7pm ET
URI has had more trouble with small, quick frontcourts than with big frontcourts. If Gil plays the 4 at all tonight, he'll have to cover someone 6-6. That spells trouble. URI should be able to use their small lineup, with both EC and TJ at forward.
This will be a low-scoring game, so turnovers and free throws take on added importance.

Re: Game #16: St Louis - Tuesday Jan 7 @ 7pm ET
Iggy makes a good point.
Southern Miss had a relatively small front line, and they
destroyed us in the paint.
Gil will have trouble covering a smaller player, but their center is taller than Gil,
so maybe he can not foul so much so early?
On the flip side, Martin becomes a bigger factor against a smaller front court,
where he can be more active inside on defense.
He was essentially a non factor against the trees of LSU. Not having a perimeter game,
to play away from the basket when he can't get inside, hurts him.
That will change when he develops his handle and shot.
Jett is a terrific defensive player. Who does he cover? X or EC? Can't cover both.
Let's hope those two have their shots falling.
I see an ugly grind 'em out ballgame. Keep it close, and we can win it.
Can't afford another 8 turnover game from Biggie. He needs to take
care of the ball.

Looking at the box score from last season, Xavier Munford had a big game with 24 points but we also had three other players in double figures. TJ Buchanan had 5 points in 17 minutes. St. Louis was significantly less balanced with 50 of their 80 points coming from Kwamain Mitchell and Cody Ellis, neither of whom are still with the team. We won the rebound battle 30-21. Jordair Jett had a particularly poor game for them, scoring only 3 points in 35 minutes with 2 assists and 3 turnovers.

Rod, is that really you in that picture? Your mustache hasn't turned white yet at your age? I'm a year younger than you, and mine turned 5 years ago.
Although I still have my hair, my brother, who's 7 years younger than me, has none.

All in fun. I actually love Freddie Mercury. Incredible performer.
I've always had a mustache. I got rid of it once,
and my daughter didn't recognize me when I picked her up at school.
I also discovered I'd lost my upper lip somewhere in time.
My rant was more in reaction to Callahan's going on, that Aaron Rodgers must be gay,
because he grew a mustache. Are people that shallow?
Wonder if he'd say that to Mike Ditka?
Somehow, staches got associated with old porn stars, or gay guys.
Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck are neither, and George Clooney has one in
his new movie.
Who knows?
Rambone, ask Blue Man. Better yet, that pic came when my daughter posted a bunch of
them on Facebook.
Here's the comments on that picture:

Wonder if he'd say that to Mike Ditka?
Somehow, staches got associated with old porn stars, or gay guys.
Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck are neither, and George Clooney has one in
his new movie.
Who knows?
Rambone, ask Blue Man. Better yet, that pic came when my daughter posted a bunch of
them on Facebook.
Here's the comments on that picture:

Rod Carri Thanks Jay! I told you to keep yours. You never change if you grow one! That pic is from 1997. Andrea was at URI basketball camp. I hit three from 3 that day at Keaney Gym. Of course nobody was guarding me....

I grew a mustache because my doctor told me to. Back in the late 70's, I fell asleep for the afternoon on Narragansett town beach, and the resulting face burn took all the pigment out of my upper lip. He said skin cancer city if I kept burning it, so the mustache has remained all these years.

I came from a culture, where many of the men wore mustaches.
My mother always nagged me to grow one.
I finally grew one on college, because I always seemed to cut
my upper lip shaving, and they were becoming popular, anyway.
Just for Men is a wonderful aid. Then again, so is Levitra.
