The gift is the largest in the university’s history. Ryan, whose personal donations to URI now total nearly $21 million, said he wanted to make a “transformative” gift.

Love this line:
Such a notable gift can have a ripple effect, spurring other donations, burnishing the university’s reputation, attracting higher-caliber students and faculty, and perhaps even deepening legislators’ appreciation for the university, which gets only 8 percent of its revenue from the state. “It can do a lot of things that elevate the university’s well-being,” Dooley said.

Better watch out. It could have the opposite effect. In RI, legislators might think they can cut support even further since the university got a large gift.

RF1, at first I chuckled at your post above. Moments later, I feared that you are correct. The General Assembly is one of the most ignorant groups with regard to the value of higher education.

ATP, unless it concerns PC or even RIC.
Such a clueless bunch never existed. Well, maybe Congress.
Actually, let them cut it down to nothing, and make the university private. Long term, would be better off.

Tom Ryan has been a busy man as of late. His gift to URI was not his only recent big financial outlay. He just spent 3.3 million on a 4.4 acre property off Ocean Road with 300 feet of ocean frontage. My guess is that even more could be spent rehabbing or replacing the current house on the site.

Not trying to tell Mr. Ryan his business, but if I'm paying that much for a house with "ocean frontage" I want some beach, or at least a dock. With those rocks there the ocean frontage is only useful to look at.

But if there actually is ocean frontage, then you're subject to public access laws.TruePoint wrote:Not trying to tell Mr. Ryan his business, but if I'm paying that much for a house with "ocean frontage" I want some beach, or at least a dock.
