Gambling on Rhody 2013
Welp, THE DAY IS NIGH! TIS HERE! REJOICE!
Basketball also means gambling, and I figure we should start fresh with lines/money with the fresh season.
Last year we were 13-13-1 against the spread. 9-10 on the over/under. So a fairly evenly handicapped season.
We took advantage of some very large spreads, but lost a couple we thought we'd have.
We had 9 games with a double digit spread last season, and we went 7-2 against them. The biggest let down being the laugher of a St. Mary's game that I think a lot of us hammered Rhody +20, and we lost by 23.
I'd expect a year where we see many less double digit spreads, and based on a weak SOS at home, it wouldn't surprise me to see a couple URI -10's.
There's no line on the Maine game as of yet..which could mean that it either hasn't come yet, or people won't be handicapping an America East/lower tier A10 matchup (last season's vermont game didn't have a line on it either).
Early season these lines will be very telling on how this team is perceived, but I'm expecting a couple of easy-to-cover spreads just based on how bad we were last season, before people figure out how who we are.

also looking forward to dip into the coffee can for placing a few bets this season with Rhody covering some of those easy; give the points games.....If I knew how, setting up something on here, like a season long contest waging "units".......would be fun.....ya know start with 1000 units and see where it goes....

I could try to keep track of standings like OB does if we wanted to do that. Not expecting a line on Maine, so we'll probably start it up on Monday.

Re: Gambling on Rhody 2013
I wish they had a line for this game!!! I got some money on UConn and a couple overs. With the new rules in place regarding no hand-checking, a lot of books are scared to release O/U lines without accumulating enough data. Most preseason games this year have ended up with teams scoring 80-90 points and 50 or so total free throws scored per game. However some books are taking O/U's and I'm going to take advantage of it early in the season while i can (hopefully)

I say we use this thread for all gambling on college hoops all season long both URI and the rest of the nation. There are a lot of money making opportunities out there and we can pool all our knowledge to kill the books
I really want to go large on URI plus points at zona but I want a lot of points, Zona not covering vs CP SLO could drag the spread down a little

Re: Gambling on Rhody 2013
The best site for college basketball lines this year (at least early lines) is BetOnline.ag, although i do use about 3 online sites to make sure i'm getting the best price The URI line has moved up to 7 points, I'm going to wait and see if it gets any higher before placing my wager on URI. I scouted the SMU Message board and they don't seem very confident that they'll walk out with the win. Also, what some people might not realize is this game is at a neutral court while their regular court (Moody Coliseum) seems to be getting renovated (upgraded) before conference play

P.S. I'm glad to say I had a great opening day for college betting, and I'm definitely willing to discuss betting spreads on this thread. On Today's card (Monday) my top pick is URI, and don't hate me guys but my second favorite pick is our friends over at Canisius.

I understand, it's always tough betting on your favorite team. But sometimes it only makes sense to since you know the most about them. I have a feeling the game tonight will be decided within 5 points. Seems to be two determined teams that are very similar on a somewhat neutral court

For all gamblers out there I highly recommend reading "The Odds". Highly entertaining book, gives perspective on the entire industry from both the professional gamblers, handicappers, and casinos perspective. Basically all gamblers and handicappers admit that the house is at a disadvantage at the start of each college season because no bookmaker has a good feel for how each team is yet and they are largely basing their lines on the previous season. I'm hoping that's the case with Rhody tonight. I got them at +7

I took a 3 team teaser, with URI +13.5, URI total OVER 127.5, and Canisius -3.5 for BIG money. I think the two URI ones are locks, and it comes down to Canisius who is hungry for a tourney appearance and should overmatch South Dakota. Good luck everyone

I don't gamble (except for an occasional Powerball ticket) and I'd be terrible in betting on college basketball. But I hope all my fellow Ram fan/bettors make a bundle this year, especially on the Rams.

Re: Gambling on Rhody 2013
BM, It was a teaser so you can move the points whatever direction you want.
Teasers
A Teaser is a bet on two or more teams or selections. The difference between a teaser and a parlay is that in a teaser YOU ADJUST (tease) THE LINE IN YOUR FAVOR.
For example:
If New England Patriots are favored by seven points in one game and the Buffalo Bills are favored by 10 points in a second game. A six-point, two-team teaser would adjust the point spread six points in your favor; i.e. New England would now be favored by one point (7 - 6 = 1) and Buffalo would now be favored by four points (10 - 6 = 4).
You could make a two-team, six-point teaser bet with Buffalo and New England. In this example are betting that Buffalo will win by more than four points (10 - 6 = 4) and New England will win by more than one point ( 7 - 6 = 1). In the case of a tie or push in a two-team teaser, your wager is refunded. ANY LOSS IN A TEASER CONSTITUTES A LOSS FOR THE ENTIRE WAGER.

Yea i missed on my parlay but hit 2/3. I did a teaser which gives me better lines for a lesser payout. Turned out to bite me in the ass this time, although I'm still in profit for college bball this year. Tonight should be a good night too, i like Manhattan ML, Duke ML, VCU/Virginia Over 142

Re: Gambling on Rhody 2013
I didn't read the part where you said teaser lol. Since I was away from the comp all weekend - let's try and keep track now. Did anyone throw down on Rhody +32 or take SMU to cover? If not than it looks like:
Based on the spread alone (screw o/u bets) (and basically anyone that posted on this thread):
Blue Man - 0-1
Twisted3829 - 0-1
Section(105) - 0-1
RoadyJay - 0-1
URIGonzo - 0-0
RIhoopz14 - 0-1
Iggy1979 - 0-1
NJ03 - 0-1
Rhody74 - 0-1
Reef - 0-1
Justns11 - 0-1
Bos8 - 0-0
I'll post the spread morning of the games (either from betus or covers.com) so that it will minimize how far the lines move. We can do this contest moving forward in 2 ways - either just keep track of everyone's record or have everyone start with 1000 imaginary credits and "bet" on the games here - with a simple 2:1 payout so that we don't get over-complicated.
Thoughts? Who's in?

Also, money line bets should probably be excluded from the tally. Skews things either way if you were taking teams +300 or -300.
I have a few for tonight. Toledo +10 @BC. Temple +4 @Towson. Saint Mary's -7 v NDSU.

Brown isn't terrible. In fact, Kenpom gives URI only a 36% chance of winning that game on the road which is less than the chance they give URI of beating Prov (37%).Blue Man wrote:I'm just gonna keep track of how everyone bets rhody (excluding parlay losses for non-rhody games) it'll be wayyyy to complicated to start tracking everyones w/l (but feel free to post it anyways)
