My point was that times change. EC has probably played hundreds of games of AAU, summer ball, etc. as the primary ball handler. This is not driving a 16 year old into a car with a stick shift for the first time. Really, though, it was in the context of him being the #1 guy "at some point". I would have no problem with him settling in as an impact shooting guard. But, if the end game is him as the starting point, with this schedule and with this lineup, I say throw him into the fire. Secondarily, I think it gets our best lineup on the floor, and lets X play a position he would be better suited for.ATPTourFan wrote:GBG, you aren't comparing the NFL Rookie QB situation this year to EC Matthews, were you? I hope not, because name me one of those NFL rookie QBs who weren't playing QB in college. It's one thing to let someone adjust to a new pace and quality of play, but it's another to also adjust to a NEW POSITION at the SAME TIME.Gonebarongone wrote:I just think that sometimes coaches tend to be too conservative with these decisions. We see NFL teams let it rip with rookie QBs now. These aren't going from running the wishbone to playing a pro style offense anymore and need to sit for two years. Similarly, freshman PGs thrive all over. Talent plays. These kids play high level competitive ball now from diapers. EC has had the ball in his hands a lot, I would guess against really good players and played thousands of minutes as a quasi PG. The more minutes and possessions EC has the ball, in my mind, the better. Now, I say this sort of sight unseen. I don't get to see practice. Maybe it's just not his game. Who knows? My point is that if the plan is at some point to get him into the role, I would err on the side of right now.

Cox is pointing fans to this link for tonight's streaming which begins at 5pm for the women's season opener. It will be good to see how this new streaming works.

I don't want to see a struggling PG as much as anybody.
I think GBG was getting at the fact that EC won't be a traditional PG at this level. His style will just be a ball dominant guard. More like a playmaker that brings the ball up.
Which I assume he must have done all his life.

Yeah very curious to see this as well. Looks like an upgraded product (which I think Laprey mentioned on here not too long ago). Glad they have the women's game first to work out any issues also!!ATPTourFan wrote:Cox is pointing fans to this link for tonight's streaming which begins at 5pm for the women's season opener. Yes, they are all recorded. Since this one is free to watch live, I expect a free archive on-demand.Billyboy78 wrote:Will there be a replay of this stream? I am going to a high school football game tonight and would love to be able to watch the URI game later tonight.

Re: Game #1 - Maine - November 8th @ 7:30pm
agree GBG. Mathews played PG some his Junior and Senior years at Romulus - Wes Clark did not play the entire game plus because of the difference in height Clark was destined for the PG spot. Mathews played PG some on his AAU team plus played some PG in Italy. He came to URI because of Dan, Bobby and Preston so he could learn the position from the best. That said, I still think we will see a line up of Mathews, Minnis, Martin and Munford a lot - the 4 M's. Plus Biruta. Sounds like Jarrelle is doing well in practices so he may see more time than I originally thought. I'll personally miss Jordan a lot and hope he gets back soon.Gonebarongone wrote:I just think that sometimes coaches tend to be too conservative with these decisions. I see this team running much more than last year and expect Mathews to often be finishing on the fast break or leading the fast break. I don't think we will see the PG play of the past when the PG dribbled, dribbled and dribbled which has tended to be the case for the last several years to much chagrin. If Mathews plays the wing a lot this year all is not lost as he is an excellent shooter, passer and creator as he drives the lane. I'm not so concerned about the PG, SG labels for the style of play we will have this year.

GBG, best point made here in a while.
This lineup should have EC at the point and X as the 2 guard. That along with Martin at the 3, Biruta at the 4, and O at the 5.
That's easily our best starting 5.
I know it will take a while for EC to settle in to that role, but that's where it should end up, sooner rather than later.

ATP, so this is the new player? the old nuleon player is out? because the women's game was quite choppy on my home computer, I feel like it might be too good for my old desktop rig.

Same problem with the audio/video not aligning. Frustrating. You can hear if a free throw goes in before the player shoots it.

Well nice to get the first W in the books. Iffy was amazing. 21 points and 10 boards in 20 minutes. Very impressed with Reichel also. It was kinda strange to finally see these guys we have been talking about for over a year play an actual game (in a good way).

Re: Game #1 - Maine - November 8th @ 7:30pm
Definitely need some work on the defensive end, but this team will score some points. We also did what you're supposed to do against weaker opponents -kill them on the boards. Onyekaba is already my favorite player...has some of those "Reynolds-Dean-type" qualities, and that's a high compliment. I like what I saw from Reischel too, seems to have a solid all-around game and looked bigger than I expected. Matthews and Martin looked very raw (as you would imagine), but you can tell the potential is there...very athletic. Lot of depth on this year's squad, which is going to be key if we plan on employing a run-and-gun style of play. I would imagine he's not 100% yet, but Biruta was very quiet tonight. Had some boards, but didn't really attack the basket at all. Definitely not worried about him though as I feel he'll be one of our top players by season's end.
