Re: Biruta
It's sprained, I believe he is expected to play Friday.
Seeing how he is I think he would have to lose the foot to not play

While I appreciate his toughness, I hope he doesn't rush things. I'd rather have him miss the Maine game rather than have him hampered for the tougher games that are upcoming.twisted3829 wrote:It's sprained, I believe he is expected to play Friday.

Re: Biruta
Been shooting xrays for almost a decade. While we don't have the results of his xrays and could not get them if we wanted to due to HIPAA, you can pretty much surmise that the result was negative.
A standard 3 view ankle plain film xray is most typically used to rule out a gross fracture of the distal fibula. Or a visible fracture in general. They go for about $100 - $150 out of pocket, and these guys wouldn't be paying out of pocket, so they are pretty much automatic for an elite athlete at this level or higher.
They cannot detect things like hairline fractures of the metatarsals or tendon or ligament injuries, however.
That would be the $2,500 - $3,000 MRI, which again, for an elite athlete like this, would be ordered if he didn't show significant improvement in about a week.

The relatively good news on the injury came a little too quick for me to fully trust it. I'm nervous until he's back playing and looks strong.

Re: Biruta
Well, they ruled out things like spiral fracture of tibia and fibula, fracture of one of the malleoli, visible fracture of all of the smaller tarsal and metatarsal bones, etc.
But, he turned his ankle hard, he's still going to have swelling, pain, etc. He's going to be day to day. Now would be the time to get into the pool. You can usually get decent workouts in the pool in this situation because of the buoyancy of the water, it reduces a great percentage of your body weight and you can try and keep it mobile if you aren't able to move around and put weight on it otherwise.

In Thorr's tour of the Ryan Performance Center he said there was going to be a hydrotherapy pool, so we should be all set.

It was odd that KMac didn't even mention it today.

I presume that means it isn't a big issue. Dan has said that the injury looked worse that it was. We'll see tomorrow.Iggy1979 wrote:It was odd that KMac didn't even mention it today.

There is nothing quite like the first five minutes of pain that you get with a sprained ankle. I would rather see him sit out this game then have a worse sprain.

Start Martin, Reischel and Oneykaba up front, and save Biruta for SMU.

If he can play then play him. No saving players. We've been saving him for 600+ days.

Players get injured favoring injuries.
If he's in any type of pain, leave him out.
Four more days isn't going to make a bit of difference to anyone.

Long season. Sure, we all want to see him play.
Fans can be less selfish and wait to see him a bit longer.
Why jeopardize the player's health and our season, for one game? Makes no sense.

My point is if he is 100% he should play. That's why I say if he can play he should play. I don't want him held out because Maine sucks. We need to build team chemistry. Now!

Re: Biruta
A few weeks ago I sprained my ankle playing basketball and I thought I did some serious damage to my ankle. As a youngster I chipped a bone in my ankle due to a severe sprain and I believed that the pain was very similar. My first thoughts were; Which hospital am I going to and how much time will I need to be out of work. It turned out that it really was not all that bad. A few days later I was back at it; in the gym hoisting up more bricks with no pain at all.
In Biruta's case, I would hope that the coaches use extreme caution because URI should beat Maine, even if I were in the starting line-up.

Re: Biruta
The worry is that Biruta is going to need at least a game (more than likely several) to get the rust off. Yes, we should be able to stomp Maine without him - but you can't expect to throw Biruta in cold against SMU and also expect us to win.

Re: Biruta
The problem with sprained ankles is they can be a chronic problem if you rush back. You may feel fine, but you are more likely to roll it again and it could turn from a minor injury to something that slows him down for an extended period of time.

Re: Biruta
My expectation is Biruta starts so he can be honored for his effort since Hurley arrived. I think he will play reduced minutes especially as it becomes obvious that the game will not be close. Win Win.

It's nice that we can say we "trust Coach Hurley" with a straight face.

Exactly. Those starting lineups are clearly not researched or checked for accuracy. They're absolutely not based on anything Dan "leaked" to his "friends" at Projo.ramfan85 wrote:Rhody74 wrote:Biruta is listed as a starter in the ProJo's pre-game box summary today.
