Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
So, he committed to UCF in the Spring, then decommitted in August, then committed to Southern Miss in early October, then decommitted in late October?
At what point in all this was Rhode Island interested?

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
Rivals added us to his list when he committed to Southern Miss. so maybe he or one of his coaches mentioned us as being involved. Other than that there's nothing connecting us to him except that he's taking the Billy Baron approach to choosing a college.ace wrote:So, he committed to UCF in the Spring, then decommitted in August, then committed to Southern Miss in early October, then decommitted in late October?

So more an "offer" than an offer.BFC wrote:Rivals added us to his list when he committed to Southern Miss. so maybe he or one of his coaches mentioned us as being involved. As far as I'm concerned they've all been "offers" (except Terrell).ace wrote:So more an "offer" than an offer.

Ah, the Sports Center generation, where kids can't pass, ball handle, or shoot,
but they sure like those "hey look at me!" dunks!

So do you think he should have passed this rebound out?rodfromcranston wrote:Ah, the Sports Center generation, where kids can't pass, ball handle, or shoot,

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
i'll take that on my team any day. just bc a guy can dunk doesnt mean he doesnt have other skills, last i checked it was still the highest percentage shot on the floor. that was dam impressive from a sheer athleticism standpoint.

Saw this floating around the internet yesterday - unbelievable athleticism to go up and get that where he did. I'm not one for dunks, but this play is fantastic.
Go Rhody!

With hops like that he should get more than 6.5 rebounds per game.

Especially at that level of play - and then projecting him to play well among the upper level teams of the A10?Rhody Guy wrote:With hops like that he should get more than 6.5 rebounds per game.

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
I think Lamonte Ulmer would have been jealous of his jumping ability. And Lamonte is a great example of the value that pure athleticism can have on a team despite limited basketball "skill." Hard work, a good motor, and great athletic ability can make you an excellent college basketball player. Regarding "should be get more than 6.5 boards," probably, but it depends on the system he plays in and what his primary position is. Listed as a SF it could be that he primarily is a perimeter defender and has limited opportunity. At the very least, he's intriguing.

Great rebounders aren't necessarily great leapers. In fact, they rarely are.

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
agree with billyboy, rebounding is about positioning not leaping. fundamentally speaking, if everyone boxed out the way you are taught to the missed shot would hit the floor and anyone could pick it up regardless of leaping ability.

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
I think this is one of the biggest myths at high-level basketball (meaning D-1 college and pro). For younger athletes and up through high school, positioning is undoubtedly the most important thing. At higher levels, athletic ability becomes a huge factor because there are many players whose pure athletic ability can overcome positioning deficiencies. That is not saying that positioning is immaterial, just look at Kevin Love (whose athletic ability is vastly underrated, for the record) or Kenneth Faried, elite rebounders who have excellent understanding and ability with regards to positioning. However, athletic ability cannot be discounted and plays a much bigger role than many people believe. Also, positioning and boxing out can be taught. 6'7" with a 40" vertical cannot.bigappleram wrote:agree with billyboy, rebounding is about positioning not leaping. fundamentally speaking, if everyone boxed out the way you are taught to the missed shot would hit the floor and anyone could pick it up regardless of leaping ability.
The "rebounding as all about positioning" and "defense is all about desire" arguments do not hold water at high-level basketball. Positioning and desire are crucial elements in those facets of the game, but they are far from the ONLY thing that matters. Desire and positioning only go so far if you have a 6'4" guy trying to box out a 6"7" guy who can jump through the roof.

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
i hear what you are saying SF but don't totally agree. we could each cite examples. but u cite kevin love, we could bring up barkley or rodman or even ben wallace. yes they were all very athletic compared to the normal Joe, but hardly the best leapers or guys that were playing way above the rim. most of their rebounding prowess came from positioning and an understanding of where the ball will bounce based on where the shot originates, etc. i agree "desire" only gets you so far, but i wouldnt put "positioning" and the ability to box out in the same category at all.

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
Agreed. I think many people put boxing out and positioning in the "desire" category as opposed to recognizing the lateral quickness, body awareness, and strength (meaning athletic ability) it takes to do those things effectively.

One of the greatest rebounders I ever saw was Paul Silas. His vertical was about 2 inches. Larry Bird is another.

Larry Bird was a tremendous athlete, unless your only experience with him is from his latter Celtic years, when his back was broken.Billyboy78 wrote:One of the greatest rebounders I ever saw was Paul Silas. His vertical was about 2 inches. Larry Bird is another.

Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
ESPN Sports Science did a piece on Kevin Love's boxing out.
They had him trying to box out a sumo wrestler weighing over 100lbs. more.
Love's technique and force of pounds per square inch was off the charts, and the sumo wrestler
could not go through Love or move him at all.
Dennis Rodman was a not bulky 6'7" and destroyed leapers much taller than him, night after night.
We had the amazing Art Stephanson, who was the most tenacious rebounder I ever saw.
He was 6'4" and powerful. I saw him dominate a pretty good 7 footer for American U named Arthur Starrs,
and pretty much did that to everyone else. He would wear his opposite number down, with his sheer bulk, and by the end of the game,
he was unchallenged. Also biggest hands around, and a superb offensive player.

I saw Bird's entire career, starting with the NCAA Tourney at Ind. St. He was never a leaper. I agree that he was a great athlete in many ways, but jumping ability was not one of them.SGreenwell wrote:Larry Bird was a tremendous athlete, unless your only experience with him is from his latter Celtic years, when his back was broken.Billyboy78 wrote:One of the greatest rebounders I ever saw was Paul Silas. Re: '14 JUCO SF - Javonte Douglas (Offer)
My point was simply that with leaping ability like that he should average more rebounds. If it takes learning how to box out sure. I will never argue against positioning, but imagine a guy that athletic who was taught fundamental rebounding.
