Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
As for some blue/white type short scrimmage; the ole coach in me wanted to see players move with and w/o ball, move in open/closed space, rebound post/square up etc. even against some traffic cop defenders. ya know an early eyeball test............

Agree 100% 105.
Dunk contests and layup drills show us little, as far as
game type abilities.

I was surprised when the event ended. I thought there would be more.
Guess we'll get to see them during the Nov 1 Exhibition game.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
I talked to DH before the event (MM) and he said the reason there would not be a game was that the players had had a tough practice early in the day and would have a tough practice tomorrow . I really enjoyed MM and talked and shook hands with all the players before it started. Also met Preston brother and got a nice tshirt from Chase Murphy. Can not wait for the season to start. there were about 15 High School basketball players . Mostly Freshmen, sophmore and Juniors. The strength and condition coach works seemed to be paying off as theplayers seemed to be bigger than when I last saw them in Italy.

I thought the same then checked my watch and it was 10pm. So it was a little over and hour. Short and sweet and was never bored. Great show. Now can we get a starting lineup thread going or too soon?

Ashcat, By the 'other' RI BB team are you referring to the one that according to The Princeton Review also has the most homogeneous student population in the country? But we already knew that fact. I must have missed The Projo's follow up article on " LOTS OF HARD LICKERS " !!! Oh I forgot The BLOJO missed the story because it was doing its 50th article in 3 years about RI'S HIGHEAT PAID STATE EMPLOYEE.

The pictures on that dunk where Biruta started behind the backboard really show how difficult that one was.

He actually did that dunk last year too. But last year's was a little better, more power as it was going through the hoop. But, you're right, a very difficult dunk.ace wrote:The pictures on that dunk where Biruta started behind the backboard really show how difficult that one was.

McNamara article:
http://ireader.olivesoftware.com/Olive/ ... le=Ar02201
As the season draws near — the first exhibition is on Nov. 1 vs. Southern Connecticut and the regular-season opener is Nov. 8 vs. Maine — Hurley finds his excitement level rising, too. A year ago he says the team he inherited from Jim Baron caused more worry than anticipation. This season he plans to unleash a very different attack. He says he can play anyone on his roster and be comfortable, and intends to mix running on offense and pressing on defense in every game.
-------
“There is an energy level when you have a great crowd,” Hurley added. “It helps you in a lot of ways. It helps you in recruiting. This year, unlike last year, we’ll want recruits to come to games and watch us play. I’m not sure that last year we necessarily wanted them to see the product.”

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
It was nice to see Hassan and Gil get a mention in NBC CollegeBasketballTalk for their outstanding efforts during Thursday’s Slam Dunk Contest.
http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports. ... son-video/
Hassan’s thru the leg dunk was compared to Jason Richardson’s winning effort during 2003 NBA All Star weekend. Granted, Richardson’s dunk was off a lob, but Hassan’s was faster, smoother and higher. Imagine what we can expect when this kid turns 18?
KMac, thanks for acknowledging that the majority of the student’s came to support the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams and not for the free food. Jeeze, let it herewith be known to the BlowJo staff that URI offers a course titled ‘Journalism 101’ and they can probably qualify for in-state tuition and maybe even a group discount.
Rod, got to hand it to Tom Izzo. He really had me going there for a minute with that cannon stunt. However, a clever switch-a-roo with the professional cannonball woman guaranteed Tom will be around to coach Michigan State for the foreseeable future.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
I have been debating weather I should make a few negative points concerning the other night. I don't want to start any problems but will pass on two reactions from the students near me.
1-Many WTFs from the guys that they never got to see the faces + side of the Ramettes or the Cheerleaders. I was on the Mackle side of Keaney and everything was aimed at the other side. The ladies never faced the students on the Mackle side. This also happens during games.
2-Students were questioning why the girls team never touched a basketball.
I personally was wondering if the RAM was on some type of probation. He never stepped on the floor and just sat in the crowd. The Ram I believe is the one that should be leading the student spirit, not hiding on spirit night.
I did enjoy most of the night and look forward to watching our much improved team.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
1,200? No way. Keany sat 3,700 after
the renovations took it from 4,400.
The only sections not filled were in the balcony near the stage,
and the stage seats itself were closed.
The sections close to the stage in the balcony were always the last ones to go when we played there. The place was filled to the last row all around.
I'd say 2,200-2,500 were there

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
Bressler,
Are you referring to "weather" vs. "whether?" My 7-year old is learning about homophones/homonyms in his 2nd grade class right now. I think he's got that one down. Apparently, some on this board (or should I type "bored") still can't figure it out. I made my point that it's a poor reflection on an individual and that individual's school. But I've moved on.
We'll get this season underway shortly.

If the crowd was estimated to be 3500, I'm guessing that at least 3000 were students. I'll be happy if 2000 students attend each game.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
Fire codes must be dated, because capacity was reduced to 3,700 after
bleacher seats were removed from lower level after renovation.
The capacity included the stage seats and the seats in front of the stage, which were not open Thursday.
Check attendance numbers in 1998. No way 3,500 were there Thursday.

Yeah, so maybe adjust the number "officials" gave to Bill Koch by applying the % full to the more recognized 3500 capacity possible given the seating configuration that night (no stage seats).

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
So 3500 of 4400 is about 79%.
79% of 3500 is 2784, which is what Rod and others who attended would estimate.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
At the time of Keaney's last season the stated capacity was 3885 which included 500 standees. Since standees are now prohibited, seated capacity, therefore, is 3385. You can see support of that capacity figure when you look at Harrick's last season when URI played part of its schedule at the PCC. The attendance at all the games played at Keaney - Brown, Dayton, Fordham, St. Joe's, St. Bona - were all sellouts and never rose above the 3,885 level.

Also, didn't Gilvydas say he learned English by listening to Tupac? Interesting to note that all of his dunks contain Pac as the background music.

It's incredible, timeless music, which will be performed long after everyone has forgotten rap.
Puccini is the greatest 20th century opera composer of some of the best romantic stories and arias.
Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, and my favorite, La Boheme are played in most opera companies today,
throughout the world.
Nessun Dorma, was the anthem of the World Cup games and the number one song in the world
in 1990, as sung by Luciano Pavarotti.
Pavarotti drew one million people to Central Park that year.
