Re: Our New Floor
Yeah, my thought is that the players would have the star right there on the uniform which would stay their whole careers, rather than a set of Cross pens or other items. If this is a true, bigtime rivalry, including mutual respect between the schools (hopefully?), then this could be cool. So when URI and PC play in the NCAAs, the rivalry stars will be on their jerseys to show off some state pride...TruePoint wrote:I don't know about patches on the uniform, but a lot of college football teams give players some commemorative trinkets for rivalry games (I think they might get them win or lose, but not sure).

Respect was never the word I would have associated with the URI/PC rivalry...hatred is more like it.

Re: Our New Floor
Man, tough crowd...!
By "state pride" I meant "promoting college basketball teams' rivalries in the state of Rhode Island", with an emphasis on showing people in other areas of the country how intense the rivalry is between the Rhode Island Rams and [those other guys located 1.5 miles northwest of RISD, and 1.5 southeast of Our Lady of Fatima Hospital].
Any thoughts or any interest in the uniform "star" [World Cup type] add-on denoting a win against a local hated rival, to try to enliven the rivalry even more...? Let me add that the two schools would have to agree on exactly how to carry this out-- this wouldn't be a one-sided thing.

Re: Our New Floor
Ok, here's another idea:
URI should open up an off-campus URI Rams clothing store in Wakefield or Narragansett, maybe in Salt Pond Plaza, where people are constantly getting Colvitto's and going to Stop N Shop, GameStop, Froyo Fix and Brainwaves... maybe rent out part of the old Major Video unit, which is still vacant and is in a great location. In the summer there are literally thousands that flood into town. In the fall and winter, business would still be solid because of new students, visiting parents, and any tourist that travels down to the beaches.
Anyway, this would provide an easy way for Rhode Islanders to buy school sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, sweatpants, everything to do with URI... the Rams are sitting on a potential gold mine, and with more people buying and wearing Rhody gear, it helps promote the school.
Also, the store should include a coffee area, so maybe partner with Dunkin Donuts and have a coffee area off to one side.
P.S. It has to be open Saturdays and Sundays.

billyjack, leave the branding of basketball and the promotions to the outside world to the media which pays for the rights to do so. Your ideas are great, I sincerely mean it, yet the RISD-conceptualizing is a GIFT that you can use at one of these media outlets.
If URI needs to sell tickets, they have an in-house advertising branch.
All of this "humanity/kumbaya approach" is an artificial device.
When it comes to hoops, like Sox fans and the Yankees and vice-versa, I hope that P.C. loses every effin' game, the more painful, the better.
Why?
1978.
Exclusion from the Big East.
How the General Assembly treats URI like a second-class citizen, rather than a prized state-resource.
The perception that URI bleeds the State dry, when the opposite is true.
I DESPISE THE SUPERIORITY COMPLEX P.C. FANS POSSESS, YET UNDESERVED. (AND I HAVE MY MASTERS FROM P.C. URI AS AN ACADEMIC INSTITUTION IS SUPERIOR.)
To quote the eminent historian Billyboy78, "FUCK P.C."

I remember years ago when PC tried to have a club football team. Just couldn't do it. Hey Sean maybe you guys can try to get a club whiffle ball team or something like that. Think about it.

It's actually pretty hilarious how Sean runs over to this board as soon as something about PC gets posted. Sometimes I think he has google alerts turned on for the letters "PC". As soon as I saw where this thread was headed I knew he'd be on his way to defend!

Re: Our New Floor
In an effort to keep things on topic...you know...discussing the new floor. I'd just like to say I hope our new floor doesn't get ruined from the black and white skid marks that'll be left on it after Rhody is done running PC into the ground.
I think it would be wise for URI Athletics to have a cleaning crew on stand by with gallons of soap, holly water, and disinfectant, so the new floor doesn't end up reeking of PC garbage. The Ryan Center should hook up a mouth wash dispenser to the HVAC to kill off all the crap that comes out of their mouths during the game. We definitely don't want all that fecal matter contaminating the shinny new floor.
I'm also concerned about the fire hazards during the Rhody vs. PC game. I feel like a grease fire could be an issue. I don't want to see the new floor go up in flames after Rhody catches fire with all the grease balls and hair gel in the vicinity. Anyone know if Fire Officials will be at the door to make sure there's a limit on petroleum application?

Yes indeed! Beautiful. It's being worked on right now. Everyone can't wait to have it arrive at the Ryan Center loading dock.
Also new this year on the floor will be LED video boards along the scorer's table to replace the rotating banner system we had.

Re: Our New Floor
i believe both now use the same 3 point line, I think it's tape/bags from either painting the line or stain inside the arc darker. (If there is a difference it wouldn't be that big, only about a foot)

Re: Our New Floor
So for some good hoop news, following the Terrell disappointment...
While chasing my son around the Ryan Center concourse (sure beats watching that Rams football team right now), I spotted the Ryan Center staff packing up the old basketball floor. It didn't look like they were simply "putting it away" for a day (especially since there are no events scheduled for the Ryan Center for a couple weeks).
They had a big staff of guys down there wrapping up each piece in what looked like industrial strength ClingWrap and stacking them all down the west sideline.
I wonder if the new floor is en route (it's gotta be done by now) and expected early next week for the guys to practice upon.
