There are two types of walk-ons. More and more recently you see teams taking PWO. These are players that may be lightly recruited, teammate of someone they were recruiting that caught their eye etc. They may have a certain skill that carries them past physical limitations, have potential to develop, or just overall seem like the type of player to make practice better.

Teams may also have managers who then become walk-ons eliminating the need for try-outs.

Teams will sometimes host "walk on" try-outs if they notice they have an opening in their roster. This will usually happen closer to the start of the season, or even after the season has begun if they have a need for more bodies. It seems like it is increasingly rare that walk-ons join college programs in this fashion. I can't imagine try-outs even happen at a lot of places anymore unless necessary.

I would recommend whoever is interested trying to connect with the DBO, Chandler Graves.

Jake DiMichele was a PWO at Duquesne last season.
He ended up starting 21 games as a freshman and averaged about 23 minutes/game.
He was awarded a scholarship for 24-25.

Kirby Mooney (nephew of Chris) will walk-on at Richmond.
As a 6'3" CG he broke many of his prep school scoring records (1.344 total pts).
Last season he averaged 24 pts/ 7.5 rebs, also led his team in assists (3.5) and was several tournament MVP's.
