After going down 22-2 to Northwestern & then kind of making a game out of it, Rhody faces Washington St in the consolation game Sunday afternoon to finish up the Hall of Fame tournament. The Rams had their toughest test of the season, so Rhode Island fans have a better sense as to where this team stands on the season. They now take on the Washington State Cougars, who lost to Mississippi St earlier 76-64.
In the Pac12, the Cougars were picked to finish tenth in the preseason polls. Washington State’s coach is Kyle Smith is in his fifth season. Last season they were knocked out of the NIT in the first round against Eastern Washington. On the court, the Cougars are led by redshirt freshman Miles Rice. He is the feel good story for Washington State as he was medically redshirted last season while receiving treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Thankfully he is cleared and in remission this season & since getting back on the court he has been lighting it up. He is currently leading the team in both points and assists. Senior forward Andrej Jakimovski is second on the team in scoring as well as rebounding with 14 & 6.7. Another player to keep an eye on is fifth year senior transfer from Idaho, Isaac Jones. He is averaging just under 14 & 9.
As for the Rams, they really need to rebound after Saturday's game. Speaking of rebounding, they need to do better as they were badly outrebounded against Northwestern. When Barnhizer got his own missed shot in traffic & kicked it out for the dagger three, that was a tough sequence and an epitome of how the game went. They will also need Jaden House to, how should I say this, not do that again. Very difficult game for him as the shots were not falling as he finished 2 for 13.
This is a winnable game on Sunday, they just can’t play like they did first quarter of the game. Now that I think of it, I really didn’t need to type out such an obvious sentence, but I guess there is no turning back now. Ha. To get the win, they will need to slowdown Myles Rice. I watched Saturday’s game & Rice looks like a really good player. If House plays like he did the first 3 games of the season, they will get the win. My prediction, URI 69 – Washington St 65. Go Rhody!!
