Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
just to add, from the games I saw, Rhody was never out matched or out played. i never saw them with their backs against the wall so to speak .
Just didn't get the extra goal.
the no OT rule i feel worked against them last season.

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
Last year before the calendar hit September they had already a tie at #21/14 Penn State and a win at #8/15 Hofstra. They turned a really good non-conference start into a completely mediocre conference season due to the ties you mentioned

Especially disappointing when you consider what the kid at Charlotte FC is doing right now.
A wasted year with a special talent like that.
This year SLU is going to be ridiculously good.

Interestingly, Agyemang only played 56 minutes in our game at Penn State and didn't play at all at Hofstra. I wonder if when he was out there too many of our guys just waited for him to make the key play

Noticed Cian Purcell isn't on this season's roster. Had elig. remaining. Maybe he transferred? Likely won't find out till he turns up in some other program.

I noticed that myself, the field is pristine. Thorr wasn't joking in the facility video about the shape of our field, and it's a big reason why we should never even consider combining football and soccer facilities

URI notched another tie last night at Harvard as the game ended scoreless. Record now stands at 1-0-2. The pattern of ties from last season is carrying over to the early start of this year.

2,113 announced attendance at tonights game
PC won 2-1
I didn't like the Red Card given to Michael Hostetter in the 1st half. Big scuffle broke out and PC got 2 Yellow Cards as a result.
Stands were packed and hundreds were watching from the corners of the field

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
$4.4 million seems excessive for a press box area and dugouts for the teams, but not enough for a full scale renovation of the complex. Maybe there will be enough left over to add some more stands though?

It was very strange. PC got two Yellow Cards on the incident but we got a Red. Tempers were really glaring on both teams. Saw PC players do plenty of flops and lots of whining to the Refs including on the play where Hostetter got the Red Card.
Not like I needed any reminders as to why I despise that former mental institution.

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
Excessive celebration…
Both teams played hard over the last 75 minutes.
Rhody has some nice players. PC only had 4 shots iirc. Keeper made a tremendous save right after the equalizer.
Amazing that Rhody tied it up with 10 to go. Very unfortunate to lose with 60 seconds left.
Both PC goals were on corners.

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
The film I caught didn't show it, but supposedly the Red Card was for kicking a player in the nuts. Automatic.
It not only makes you play a man down (leading to the loss) but also takes offender out of the next game. A very unwise move if true.

Just four games into the season and it is already looking like it is the A-10 Tournament Championship or bust as far as making it to the NCAA's.

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
Interesting match on several levels. Coming off an unexpected whitewash on Sat. in a in match that had no penalties but 6g scored against? Tonight not much better.
On the other hand Bryant was undefeated/unscored upon with new coach in a new league. URI was likely thinking they may be looking ahead, to conference match at the end of the week and overlook Rams.
Of course if you haven't given up any goals you prob' aren't playing a difficult OC sched (last, in OSS). But AmEast is likely to be power rated higher than A10 at the end of the season and get likely three (maybe 4) into the NCAA. If Bry wins this week against UVm they are prob' "in" the NCAA, barring a collapse. I'd say their program has changed in a big way.

Looks like we are decimated with injuries. I noticed 5 starters out tonight (Molina, Montoro, Oystese, Kwitchoff & Villanueva).
Still no excuse to be outscored 10-0 in our last 2 matches. We also only have 1 senior on the entire roster.

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
Men's soccer goes scoreless once again and lost at St Louis 2-0 this past Saturday. The team has not scored a goal in its last four matches. Has just five goals in nine games being outscored 14-5. Record is 0-2-1 in A-10 and 2-4-3 overall. It is looking like the program will likely miss qualifying for its second straight A-10 Tournament as only the top eight teams make it.
It would seem the days when URI would typically always have good men's soccer, baseball, and golf teams may now be in the past.

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
A little early to say it's likely being only 3 points, or 1 win, out of a tie for the last playoff spot, but they certainly need to pick things up soon. Remaining conference games with place in standings:
10/4 (Wed) 7 pm at George Mason Fairfax, VA on ESPN+ 14th (last)
10/7 (Sat) 7:05 pm vs Fordham URI Soccer Complex on ESPN+ tied for 4th
10/14 (Sat) 7:05 pm vs VCU URI Soccer Complex tied for 1st
10/21 (Sat) 7:05 pm vs Loyola Chicago URI Soccer Complex on ESPN+ tied for 8th
10/28 (Sat) 1 pm at Davidson Davidson, NC tied for 4th
So far we've played
at Dayton tied for 4th
La Salle 7th
at Saint Louis tied for 1st
Our remaining schedule isn't much easier, have to take advantage of tomorrow night's game and Loyola especially

2015 4-3-1 (t-4th)

Last year and this year with the change in OT rules 2-4-5
Off year and a half that can be rebounded from? A coach that has gotten "comfortable" as suggested in another thread? Something about his system that has been hurt with having no OT anymore? Other?

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
Losing 4-2 Wednesday to a team that was 0-3 in conference was absolutely not a result we needed. Now we're 5 points back of a tournament spot, but with 4 teams between us and 8th. We are 157 in RPI through games played Sunday.
10/7 (Sat) 7:05 pm vs Fordham URI Soccer Complex on ESPN+ tied for 2nd, 10th RPI, 24th in coaches poll
10/14 (Sat) 7:05 pm vs VCU URI Soccer Complex tied for 4th, 40th RPI
10/21 (Sat) 7:05 pm vs Loyola Chicago URI Soccer Complex on ESPN+ tied for 5th, 69th RPI
10/28 (Sat) 1 pm at Davidson Davidson, NC ESPN+ tied for 2nd, 42nd RPI
That certainly doesn't appear to be a schedule conducive to moving up in the standings and getting a spot in the tournament

That certainly doesn't appear to be a schedule conducive to moving up in the standings and getting a spot in the tournament

100% the OT rule has hurt us, but we're all playing by the same rules, so I have a tough time using that as an excuse.RhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑8 months ago Since Gareth Elliott took over with the 2013 season here are his year by year A10 results:

Last year and this year with the change in OT rules 2-4-5
Off year and a half that can be rebounded from? A coach that has gotten "comfortable" as suggested in another thread? Something about his system that has been hurt with having no OT anymore? Other?
it doesn't matter to me who we play, Narragansett Mariners or Manchester United. We're not going to beat anyone not scoring any goals. I don't think lack of goal scoring is due to a 'coach being comfortable'.

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
Would a team lacking goal scoring be more likely to tie than teams with more goal scoring? I would presume yes, but not really sure

Re: 2023 Men's Soccer
Not sure about how the lack of OT hurts.
They used to play 20 extra minutes, but still had ties.
They could also win or lose…obviously.
Now there are a few more ties, but they’re missing some players.
Regarding this year, the PC result after playing shorthanded for 75 minutes was heartbreaking. They sucked against Holy Cross… and the last few weeks have been dreadful to be sure.
But Gareth has 2 titles to his credit. 0-2 in the NCAAs but both matches were incredible.
I personally don’t blame Rhody’s struggles these last four years on his sense of complacency, whatever the fuck that means.

Nice win tonight over the #24 team in the country. We have had a crazy amount of injuries this year. That, and with only 1 senior in the roster I don’t think we are as bad as our record shows. We definitely have plenty of promise for the future. We lost our best striker to the MLS last year. There is no complacency. Go Rhody!!

For reference, they were 27-39 (not including ties) in the 4 seasons prior to Elliott taking overRhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑8 months ago Since Gareth Elliott took over with the 2013 season here are his year by year A10 results:

Good point. And that striker has been productive in his time in his rookie pro seasonJFrech21 wrote: ↑8 months ago Nice win tonight over the #24 team in the country.
