That's like saying "he's the thinnest fat guy." We're not talking Stan Robinson or Jarvis Garrett here. Time to wipe the slate clean.NYGFan_Section208 wrote: ↑1 year agoYet, he was still one of the most talented players on the team...hopefully, he decides to come back

They were 35-4 and we are 9-22. They had much better players than us. We know what Carey can do and not many people are excited to see him come back and brick three’s and play hero ball. Carey at the 4 is excepting losing. He can’t shoot. What would his benefit be to us? Much more exciting to me to see players we haven’t yet seen with a chance to step forward.rhodylaw wrote: ↑1 year agoJust watched Florida Atlantic go to the final four with small, athletic 4 guard/wing lineups. Far more likely we do that than get a few traditional bigs who are good enough to get us to the tourney.RamStock wrote: ↑1 year agoLol. Yeah let’s bring Carey back to play a small 4. That should get us to the next step in moving closer to the tourney. A 6-3 power forward that can’t step out and shoot and is turnover prone. Let it go. The last few seasons were a disaster. Time to get new players in.rhodylaw wrote: ↑1 year ago
This is exactly why you bring back Carey who is athletic enough to play a small 4 if needed. We are looking at the 12/13 spot on our roster. I don’t see a stud player coming to fill that spot. It is either a project player or a guy who will be gone next year. Give me the guy who played in the system last year, is a freak athlete, who has improved every year. You guys are crazy to not want him back.
We have a lot of new players in, nothing wrong with keeping 1 who played his role for the most part and would fit in nicely with the new players.

This is all relative though
Carey isn’t a shooter and doesn’t need to be. He has top 1% athleticism.
The issue is when the other guys on the team are such bad shooters he’s forced to shoot too

This is the opposite of recency bias. You're really reaching to make your argument that a 24 year old college player who can't shoot or drive or pass deserves a sixth year in school.ramster wrote: ↑1 year agoWas it all relative last year when Carey led the Team in 3FG%?KingstonLane wrote: ↑1 year agoTeam 168-553 = 30.4 %

To go along with brick threes and play hero ball, you forgot "and randomly just throw the ball 15 feet in the air"RamStock wrote: ↑1 year agoThey were 35-4 and we are 9-22. All Im showing is Carey's 3FG% from last year. Point was made by Kingstown Lane that Carey is not a shooter. I could add that Carey hit 83.5% FTs - that isn't a percent of a player who can't shoot.PeteRI wrote: ↑1 year agoThis is the opposite of recency bias. Jalen’s best offense - midrange - is statistically the worst shot to be taking in the modern game. Rod used to talk a lot about the definition of insanity and it’s creeping into this discourse. He is who he is we’ve got plenty of data to evaluate; it’s time to move on.

Unless of course the staff is unable to fill another need or can't find anyone better.bigappleram wrote: ↑1 year ago Jalen’s best offense - midrange - is statistically the worst shot to be taking in the modern game. Right now, my biggest concern is to see a big improvement over last season.
Remember with all his faults, you can't teach experience aside from him having a decent mid-range game, rebounds well, plays good defense, and can attack the rim.
Plus, I think this discussion is a waste because I don't see him really wanting to come back.

Re: URI 2023 Transfers - Who Will Stay and Who Will Go?
I think I agree with what Chris DiSano wrote on Friday. Right now our needs with the final two scholarships are a big, and best available.
Keep in mind best available is more then just "best at scoring". There is a lot more to building a basketball team then PPG. There is a saying, the devil you know is better then the devil you don't (I may be messing this up!). The reason I say that is Archie knows Jalen. He knows his work ethic, and his character. He may be a better fit then someone who might produce more but would be a "locker room cancer", possibly ending up in another Brayon situation... Or maybe Jalen has been tough to deal with in which case they want to take their chances with someone/anyone else.

It's going to be:
1. Buru
2. Pride and/or some other "best available" out there
It's not going to be Carey, he doesn't even figure into this equation.

Yeah.
Pride obviously wants a payday. There's no guarantee he'll get another opportunity, so, I can't say that I blame him.
I just hope he doesn't go to a different A-10 team, is all.

I have no idea. I didn't figure St. Bonaventure for having a ton of NIL money, but who really knows? It's a private school.

Re: URI 2023 Transfers - Who Will Stay and Who Will Go?
Pride isn't coming here. Iggy is 1.000 in his statements like these, lifetime. He's money. There is no reason to doubt this one. We learned that there was no visit about a week ago.
It is what it is. I'm guessing this came to a head well before today, most likely around the weekend Kortright had his visit, it was rumored that that was previously meant to be the weekend that Pride was coming here to visit.
Hopefully we can get Buru, that will shore up our frontcourt, and then "the best player available". Either a dead eye shooter, or someone who has not yet declared, before we reach the deadline, or someone currently out there, previously overlooked.

I'm curious when you're going to see contracts for players with buyouts.
I.e. - here's a 4 year, $1M contract - but if you leave next year you have a buyout your other NIL will have to pay.
I'm sure that's coming. Can't imagine these donors are going to enjoy getting burned year after year without protecting their investments.

Also - I know I tend to check out in the offseason, but what's this obsession with Pride?
He averaged 14 points on an average to bad underperforming Bryant team in a really bad conference. He's not super efficient as a scorer.
For what people are making him out to be you'd think they'd be burning down the world because we got Jaden House who averaged more points in less minutes in a similar conference, with more years to develop.

Also not bad stats last season: almost 15 pts. (37% 3 PT, 85% FT), 6 rebs, and 2.4 assists.
I think he would be a good 1-year loaner but yeah he wouldn't immediately make us a conference contender.

This already happened with Jaden Rashada. His initial NIL deal was bought out with one team to decommit and commit elsewhere. The scandal is that the ppl/team that bought out his original deal didn't deliver on the NIL deal they offered above the old deal, but I do think they made good on buying out the first. I think that is the most messy NIL story so far.Blue Man wrote: ↑1 year agoI'm curious when you're going to see contracts for players with buyouts.

None of the players we are involved with are going to change our trajectory by themselves. He would have been a good addition but I'm ready to move on. We started off saying, or actually Archie started off saying, I believe, that shooting was going to be a priority with new players. Well, we went from House who is decent, not horrible, shooting, to Montgomery, who is in the same sphere as House, it looks like, to Kortright, who is clearly not a shooter and a liability at the line.
So, now we got Wright, who is a very good shooter. Pride was also supposed to shore up our shooting. Other than being a good SG with a good track record, avg 17 and 14 plus points per game the past two seasons, and very steady influence on the court when he's on there, sometimes he stands out, sometimes it seems like he disappears but he tends to do all of the Yeoman work in the meantime like rebounding the way Ish did.
So, that's pretty much the story. If Iggy says he isn't coming here, he's not coming here, but it seems like the trend was to go for more playmaking and penetrating and getting to the line, as we went along. Hopefully they can use one of the remaining scholarships to get someone who can flat out shoot and keep the defense honest that way. That Wheza guy, wingman, looked promising in his video clips.

House had 13.5 shots per game, Pride 10.9 last season. Hence the difference in scoring.Blue Man wrote: ↑1 year ago Also - I know I tend to check out in the offseason, but what's this obsession with Pride?

Pride 45% from the field, 37% from 3, 85% from the line last year.
We would kill for someone to shoot those percentages.
His numbers dipped a bit last year but that was because of multiple scorers around him. With Peter Kiss, nations leading scorer, Pride still managed to score 18 a game with 9 rebounds his junior season.
A big strong, warrior type wing player.
Last season he had:
28 @ Final Four participant FAU
23 @ Cincinnati
13 and 6 @ Syracuse in a W

Re: URI 2023 Transfers - Who Will Stay and Who Will Go?
FWIW Montgomery shot 42% from three last year. I think he is going to be a very good addition to our rotation. Great size for a wing, solid defender and above average shooter. A lot to like with him. Would like us to add another prolific perimeter player.jcru wrote: ↑1 year agoHouse is a great player. He would have been a good addition but I'm ready to move on. I sure as hell do not want to be counting on Weston to be good next season. The more proven guys we have the better.

Yeah, what Rhody15 said.
Let's not do the sour grapes thing, he's not coming here. But he's still a high level player.
My concern is that every year we set out to be a good shooting team, across the board, and every year sacrifices are made so it never happens. Pride would have helped there. Wright will help. Dubsky will definitely help. Estevez seems like a decent shooter, and then you have Montgomery and then House. And Rory.
Buru is actually a relatively good shooter. I hope they get someone who has ice water with the last ship.

There's an adage that you can coach players up on defense, because it's often a matter of effort, but you can't "will" your team to a better offense. We sucked on offense last year, and were average on defense, so it's not surprising to me that pretty much every recruit we've brought in has at least one offensive skill you can point to as a plus.
They all come at it from different ways. Brown averaged 3.8 offensive rebounds a game and shot 57 percent from the field. House averaged 9.6 FTA per 40 minutes, suggesting he attacks the basket in a way we lacked last year. Montgomery, Wright and Dubsky all shot better than 40 percent from 3. Kortright can distribute as a PG without being a total liability on offense because he attacks the rim from time to time. Estevez is now a 3-star recruit according to 247, and his stock seems to be on the rise.
I don't expect that all of these recruits will pan out, between now playing in the A-10 (adjusting from a lower conference or high school) and just general fit issues. But at least on paper, the level of talent definitely seems better than the recruiting class from last year, and we should be a more versatile team on offense.

Yes SG it absolutely better be, and I would expect no less from our staff in improving the talent level from last season.SGreenwell wrote: ↑1 year ago There's an adage that you can coach players up on defense, because it's often a matter of effort, but you can't "will" your team to a better offense. They had a full year now under their belt, so no passes this season.

Where is this thing that Chris Disano wrote Friday?Bos8 wrote: ↑1 year ago I think I agree with what Chris DiSano wrote on Friday.
