Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
Second round picks nowadays are more a matter of coach or GM's preference, or, taking a flier on a non-college prospect. Toppin could get picked, but it doesn't really matter much if you're a second round pick vs. an undrafted free agent - First round is usually the only guaranteed money for three to five years. He doesn't really strike me as a great NBA prospect, but he can probably hang around the G-League for a couple years. He'd make more money somewhere else. (Obi is averaging 14.4 MPG this year, so it's not like he has the sway to get him on a roster, a la Giannis and his brother.)

Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
Some say you are better off NOT being picked in the 2nd round
Either way he will be playing pro ball next year
He will be invited to NBA summer league play
He's off and running
Teams will pick him up for sure

He might have made more money staying at Kentucky.SGreenwell wrote: ↑1 year ago Second round picks nowadays are more a matter of coach or GM's preference, or, taking a flier on a non-college prospect. I don't see why he'd move on from Kentucky....do a few more commercials with Lily...make a couple more mil,,,
I don't see what's not to like, especially if you're not even a Round 1 lock....

You're assuming he had a choice.
3 of the top 4 Class of 2023 are going to Kentucky.
5 of the Top 21 Class of 2023
Kentucky has the Top recruiting class, followed by Duke
Calipari met with his players this week. Decisions were made on both sides.

Going into this season it was reported that Jacob was looking really good and had a shot @ the 1st round
I didn’t see him too much until he played PC and ksu in the dance and he didn’t look like a draft pick to me
I am also bearish on Oscar T NBA chsnces

Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky forward Jacob Toppin's college career is over.
Toppin announced Friday he will not take advantage of the extra season granted by the NCAA to student-athletes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, he will begin focusing on the NBA draft.
“To Big Blue Nation: ever since I was a kid, it’s always been a dream of mine to be able to play at the highest level of basketball,” Toppin said in a statement released by the UK athletics department. "I came to Kentucky to chase that dream and in my time here, I’ve grown tremendously not only as a player but as a man. This place has taught me things that I will take with me for the rest of my life. For that, I want to thank my coaches and my teammates and most importantly the fans. Your support and passion are things I’ll never forget, and I will carry with me."
He wasn't expected to be back with the Wildcats for a fifth college season.
After the team's loss to Kansas State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, coach John Calipari said he didn't believe any senior would return to Lexington to use the eligibility waiver. Sahvir Wheeler entered the transfer portal Monday, while former walk-on Brennan Canada, who was placed on scholarship in January, announced Thursday he will return to UK.
Looking forward: What's ahead for John Calipari and Kentucky basketball after early NCAA Tournament exit?
Toppin faces an uphill climb to the NBA. He is not rated among ESPN's top 100 prospects in this year's draft, and isn't projected to be selected in the latest mocks from USA Today, NBAdraft.net or NBAdraftroom.com.
“I’m excited for Jacob to take this next step of chasing his dream of becoming a professional player,” Calipari said Friday. “Jacob has steadily improved every season and is ready for this next step. He has all of the tools to be successful in that league and is mentally prepared beyond measure to handle anything that comes his way.”
Toppin, who transferred to Kentucky after one season at Rhode Island, saved his best college season for last.
He averaged 12.4 points per game, behind fellow seniors Oscar Tshiebwe (16.5) and Antonio Reeves (14.4). His 6.8 rebounds per game ranked second on the team, trailing only Tshiebwe's nation-leading 13.7. Toppin recorded eight double-doubles last season after having none prior to the season.
He improved as a perimeter shooter last season, from 27.6% (21 for 76) on 3-point attempts in his first three seasons to 50% (13 for 26) during SEC play in 2022-23.

Fun guy. Point guard on Maryland's Final Four team coached by Lefty Driesell in the early 70s.
When we played Maryland in the 1979 NIT, we were down two at the end of either the first or second overtime (worst nicotine fit I ever had). Kraft let him draw up a trick play he learned from Lefty. Our inbounder ran the baseline and ran his defender right into John Nelson, who had his hands on his knees bracing for impact. The defender was called for a foul, Nelson swished two free throws and the game went on.

I remember that play very well. The reason it worked so well was because the way it was set up, the defender couldn't see Nelson and just plowed right into him.Rhode_Island_Red wrote: ↑1 year ago Fun guy. Point guard on Maryland's Final Four team coached by Lefty Driesell in the early 70s.

FWIW: It's important for the in-bounder to pretend to pass the opposite direction from the way he's running.

This is a good read on how a school should not treat its former players:

The twins caused zero issues at Arkansas. No suspensions, dismissals, etc.
Makhi started a bunch and is staying.
Makhel did not receive much playing time so seems to value that for his last year over playing with his brother.
