Missing Dolly's shooting. And Squires and Toure need to show up in second half.

Nice reality check for this program. Wake Forest is picked to finish near the bottom of the ACC yet they're almost scoring double us.

I'm a big Toure fan but she HAS to cut down on the turnovers. She has 41 of them this season in just 11 games. No one else on the team has more than 19.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
Rhody plays their toughest OOC opponent next Wednesday at Princeton.
Princeton won 4 out of their last 5 games losing to #6 UConn.
Last season they won 25 games (14-0 Ivy) and barely losing to #3 Indiana 2nd round NCAAT (55-56)
They return 4 starters from that team.
Kaitlyn Chen- Averaging about 15 pts/4.5 assists. IVYT most outstanding player 2022.
Julia Cunningham - Averaging about 14 pts. 1st Team All-IVY 21-22.
Grace Stone- Averaging about 12 pts.
Ellie Mitchell - Averaging 12.5 rebounds and IVY-DPOY 2022.
Also upfront 6'3" center Paige Morton.
Not sure we pull this game out.
Let's see how our team reacts after the loss at Wake Forest.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
I could have missed something, but this is the last update I know of for Tenin Magassa
There are still two more December games, the 28th and 31st, but with no known updates since mid-November and coming down to the end of the month I'm wondering if she's behind schedule. Would certainly be nice to have her and Dolly back Wednesday against #51 NET Princeton

Is anyone here on KB attending the Princeton game and if so, is there a pre-game meet-up or luncheon?

They tried to schedule a pregame get together but it was canceled. Maybe not enough attendees responded. I know I didn’t. There are 3 of us going to the game. We will be sitting behind our bench as we always do.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
Wasn't able to watch live, but piecing together from the play by play... The Rams lose a heartbreaker, 56-54 at Princeton, on a lay-up by Grace Stone as time expired. Debroise was called for a charge with six seconds left, which gave the Tigers the ball and the chance to win. URI led by five with 2:35 left, after a 3 by Lassiter, but couldn't hold down the stretch.
Toure led URI with 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting, and also had a team high 10 rebounds. Lassiter shot 4-for-8, including two 3s, for 10 points. However, the rest of the team combined to shoot 7-for-32. Squires had a particularly rough game, finishing 3-for-10, 2-for-5 from deep, but with five turnovers.
URI hosts Duquesne at noon on Dec. 31.

I was working and couldn't tape ESPN Plus. Just as well I guess. A heartbreaker but at least we played them even on the road and without Dolly. I hope she recovers in time for this weekend.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
Just got back from the game, tough way to lose.
I do expect some bad calls on the road.
Still, the 20 turnovers were the death of us.
Also shooting 33% FG and 25% 3pt didn't help.
We did out-rebound them 41-38.
With all that said much better game than the last one.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
We led 51-46 with 2:35 left in the game.
Outstanding play by Hattix-Covingotn with 25 seconds to go to grab the offensive rebound, score the basket plus hit the FT to convert an old-fashioned 3 point play to put URI ahead 54-53.
Chen made the 1st and missed the 2nd to make the score 54-54 with 16 seconds to go in regulation. URI with possession.
I thought at worst we go to OT, at best we win the game on this possession.
Since Lassiter fouled out with 1:17 to go, Freshman Ines DeBroise took over the PG role.
DeBroise drove towards the hoop and called for the offensive foul with 6 seconds remaining. Refs reviewed the call but decided to let it stand.
DeBroise had made a nice pass out to the 3P line but her momentum took her into the Princeton defender who positioned herself to draw the foul.
Princeton came down the court in 6 seconds for the winning 2 point shot.
Tough to lose a game like this on the road. Driving the lane is dangerous at times like this as Princeton's biggest hope was to draw the offensive foul and we got outsmarted.

The refs did not review the charge/block call. The defender was still moving and may have been in the circle.
Princeton did not drive the length of the court for the winner. They called timeout which automatically advances the ball to half court.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
The ESPN+ announcers were saying the offensive foul call was being reviewed since it was within the last two minutes of the game. Sounds like they got the wrong communication. They never did officially announce the results of the review. Don't know why Tammi wouldn't have been screaming for a review of that critical offensive foul call. That was the ball game.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
It wasn't very good execution to have our freshman PG drive the lane to dish out for a 3P. Princeton was smart to set up to take a charge. Only chance Princeton really had to avoid OT and win in Regular Time was to get a turnover from URI = and they did.Jersey77 wrote: ↑1 year agoIt is my understanding that call wasn't reviewable and cannot be overturned.ramster wrote: ↑1 year ago The ESPN+ announcers were saying the offensive foul call was being reviewed since it was within the last two minutes of the game. Not a very well drawn up play.
I don't blame the Refs at all. We should have worked the ball outside for a good shot with no offensive foul risk.
At the very least get to OverTIme.
I only am saying what the Announcers at ESPN+ were saying. Rerun the ESPN+ last minute and you will hear them. Refs didn't cost us the game, we had this one for the taking.

Preferably as the clock was running out.
Once the refs called the offensive foul, the only thing they can review was how much time was left.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
Like I said, it was a bad play call and/or poorly executed. She was trying to pass out to the 3P line - so if you are settling for a 3P why drive inside in the first place. Too much to expect a freshman PG to come in for Lassiter who had fouled out a minute earlier.Jersey77 wrote: ↑1 year agoI would have liked to have seen Toure' attempt the last shot and maybe draw a foul.ramster wrote: ↑1 year agoIt wasn't very good execution to have our freshman PG drive the lane to dish out for a 3P. Don't get opportunities like this in OOC to get a win - we had an excellent chance to win this game and gave it away. Learn from it and move on.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
Next game is Saturday at home against Duquesne.
They are 10-3, winning 5 of their last 6.
Duquesne returns 3 starters including their top scorer, plus a transfer starter from Xavier.
They have plenty of size and should be much improved over last season.
Myers- Leading scorer averaging over 14 pts/ 41% (3 PT)
Townsend- 6'2" forward Xavier transfer averaging 12 pts/6 rebs.
Johnson - 6'4" center averaging 11 pts/ 7.4 rebs.
McConnell - Averaging about 10 pts/ 10 rebs/ 6 assists
Hamilton and Bernard both averaging 9 pts.
I expect us to win but should be a close game at home.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
Megan McConnell was picked All A10 Defensive Team Preseason but she is playing as deserving of much more than that. She could potentially be 1st team All Conference.
She leads the A10 in Rebounds and also in Assists.
Megan has had 2 Triple Doubles already this year against Brown and Delaware.
Megan's brother is TJ McConnell who is in his 8th year in the NBA.
Will be interesting to see how Tammi manages the defense on Megan

URI goes up 23-13 in the first quarter on Duquesne, but manage to fight off a feisty team the rest of the way en route to a 70-63 win. The visitors managed to tie it with 4:15 in the fourth quarter, and even took a brief lead on a 3 with 3:00 left. But Squires answered with a 3, as URI outscored them 12-4 in the final three minutes. Hattix-Covington led URI with 15. May Tour and Sophie Phillips had 14 each. Tour also led the team in rebounding with 13.

Unlike the men our Ladies know how to beat Duquesne. They really showed a lot of character and determination to come back from a deficit in the last 3 minutes and really dominate offensively. Heck of an A10 debut!

Correct. It was anybody’s game. Huge 3 by Emma Squires with 2:16 to go
We were losing 58-59 with 3 minutes to go
Outscored them 12-4 the last 3 min to win 70-63

It was nice to see Emma finally hit a shot at a key moment because she hasn't been herself the last few games. Sophie, Emmi and Sayawni continue to hit 3s, Maya finishes strong, and Madison led the way with 15 and 8. Hopefully Dolly comes back soon.

Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
Rhody's next game is at UMass on Wed.
UMass is the heavy favorite to win the A10, they have talent, size, and depth.
They also return 5 starters including the top player in the conference.
Breen - A10 POY ('22), currently averaging 18 pts/10 rebs.
Taylor- A10 2nd team ('22), averaging 17 pts/5.5 rebs.
Philoxy- A10 2nd team ('22), averaging 12.4 pts/ 5 assists
White - Averaging 12.4 pts/ 7.3 rebs.
Mayo - Averaging 12 pts/ 4 assists
Ngalakulondi- Averaging 8 pts/ 7 rebs
As a team they shoot 44% FG.
Also have a 14 pt/ 6 reb. advantage over their previous competition.
I don't expect a win here.

No stopping these ladies! Deadly from behind the arc tonight - almost 50% on 14 for 30. Phillips was 5 for 7, Hattix-Covington 4 for 8, and Lassiter 3 for 7. Wish our men could shoot like this!

I've had the same thought. Update coming out of the New Years Eve Duquesne game is she's rehabbing and week to week. Not a lot of weeks left in the season thoughJersey77 wrote: ↑1 year agoAt this point, I wonder if she redshirts this season.SmartyBarrett wrote: ↑1 year agoI didn't hear that but I'm guessing they meant Magassa?Running Ram wrote: ↑1 year ago Did the commentators mention that Fopossi is still on the team and rehabbing from injury? or did I imagine that? Re: 2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season
We go from 78 to 72 in the NET after yesterday's win over UMass, now in first place.
72 Rhode Island
73 UMass
91 Richmond
92 Fordham
94 St. Joe's
110 Duquesne
We've played two games in conference and beat the second place NET team at their place and 6th place team at home. UMass was the consensus favorite to win the conference, but after last night we're definitely right in the conversation with them. That we're playing this well without Dolly for the last four and haven't had Tenin Magassa at all makes us extremely dangerous the rest of the way
