After a less than ideal performance against Kansas State in the opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic, the Rams will take on the Tulane Green Wave. Tulane, which were a preseason top 4 team in the American Athletic Conference, lost by 9 to Nevada last night. If you look up volume shooter in the dictionary, Jaylen Forbes picture from last night is there. He took 25 shots, almost 40% of his team’s shots, scoring 22 points. He shot more 3s (4 of 12) than any other play on his team took shots. Even Fatts Russell thought he should have toned it down. In Forbes’ defense, the Green Wave are missing their best player in Jalen Cook (1st Team Preseason). He injured his back in the previous game & may not play in today’s match-up. Along with Forbes, Sion James both played 36+ minutes in yesterday’s game. So hopefully they are a bit tired for tonight’s game. Leading the team in scoring this season is Collin Holloway, who transferred from Georgetown. Throw in junior Kevin Cross, who is averaging in double digits as well. Tulane is averaging over 80 points a game while shooting 48% & the Rams…well, they are not. URI is averaging less than 65 per game while shooting 38% from the field. Will be interesting to see how this game plays out offensively.
As for Rhody, well last night’s game was not good. On the bright side, after starting the season 0-17 from the field, Braylon Freeman hit a shot. I am anxiously awaiting the press release announcing a banner being raised into the rafters of the Ryan Center to signify such a momentous occasion. In last night’s game URI continued their shooting woes with only Carey shooting the ball well but he did have 4 turnovers in just 16 minutes of play. If URI plans on pulling out the upset victory, along with shooting better they need to take care of the ball better. They are averaging almost 17 turnovers per game while Tulane only has 9 per contest.
Tulane hasn’t really played anyone until last night & they rolled easily in their first 3 wins. Hopefully Rhody’s defense can make it more of a game. On a side note, URI will not be the only team from Rhode Island Tulane plays this year as Bryant will travel to NOLA in a couple weeks. URI will not be the only Rams Tulane plays this year as Fordham also will travel to NOLA. I can only assume that this will be close to 10 point spread in Tulane’s favor. For the gamblers out there, URI is 0-4 against the spread. My prediction Tulane 75 – URI 65. Go Rhody!!
