Don't think we have much of a chance, looking at that list of mostly P5's.

I think that we have one of the first two virtual meetings speaks volumes.

Damn. I was hoping for him or Salnave. The other guys are not too exciting to me. Not excited about Antonio and Nelson. I would much rather have Nelson than Antonio though. Hima is a 12/13 man on the team that you are better off leaving the spot open as he will never contribute to us. He would take over the Tertsea/Layssard spot on the team.

I'm guessing during the virtual tour last night, maybe Cox pushed for a quick commitment. Not sure why else we would go from getting a virtual tour to out of his top 16 in less than 24 hours.

We always push for the quick commit. But even if we didn’t, our chances were very slim.

Maybe the virtual tour showed where Rhody practices, the work-out room, locker room area and our tour was a lot shorter that other basketball teams.

Maybe Cox didn’t tell him what he wanted to hear

Re: '18 NY SG - Jose Perez (Gardner-Webb Transfer)
It’s pretty wild how we were one of the few who had a virtual meeting with him and didn’t even make his Top 16!! That’s tough to do, and it made me laugh a little just because the meeting with him must have been a train wreck.

The guy would start if he came here with Fatts leaving. Sheppard and Martin would have started near him with Mitchell and Harris

He obviously didn’t like what Cox was selling!!
If I had to guess Cox wouldn’t guarantee he’d be in starting five.

I don't think that was it, only because there probably are not many rosters in Div 1 BB where this guy wouldn't have been starting 5, URI included.

Cox recruiting philosophy is find out where you stand early. He is not going to focus on a transfer who “narrows” his schools to 20 in late April.

Re: '18 NY SG - Jose Perez (Gardner-Webb Transfer)
Narrowed Teams down to 20. Narrowed?
22 games played for Gardner Webb from Big South
Team finished 16-16. 11-7 in Big South
Gardner Webb NET = 212
Perez Stats:
102-300 FG = 34.0%
26-104 for 3P = 25.0%
104-140 FT = 74.3%
6.5 rpg
4.2 apg
Lot of shots taken to produce those percentages
Need strong player to replace Martin/Toppin. URI Can do better.

Have no idea when he can play. Have seen he could be immediately eligible, eligible 2nd semester, or not eligible until next season. We’ll see what happens.

Doubtful Perez comes, but he would only be a short term band-aid.
A 1-year loaner at best.
If he transfers now, would be eligible for 2nd semester.
Or waits until next fall for the 23-24 season.
Not holding my breath on Ant.

The plan was for Ant to be here after the first semester. If Perez comes here, there are no schollies remaining for Ant. Just that fact that we're 'reaching out' to Perez tells me that Ant isn't coming.

Yes, that may have been the plan, but not sure we can ever count on Ant.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑1 year agoThe plan was for Ant to be here after the first semester. Davis sitting him out since early Jan, then going to summer school, and still not being able to academically qualify is a glaring problem.

Re: '18 NY SG - Jose Perez (Gardner-Webb —> Marquette)
Am I missing something?
He's a 6'5 G/W which we're pretty deep at for this coming season and in the future. I'd honestly rather see Lou Hutch get some burn this year since this isn't "win now" and more "build for the future."
Also he's played at lower levels than the A-10 for 3/4 years. He's a career 39% shooter. 30% from 3. When he played against legit competition his numbers dropped to 35% and 29%. Not exactly the mold that Archie's been seeking out.
Go find some forward depth if we're so desperate to fill out our scholarships.
Hard pass.

For me, It depends on Ant. If he's not coming, I'm fine bringing in a one-year rental that can make an impact.. I still wouldn't mind seeing this team be somewhat competitive this year. If it's between this kid and someone like Ish or Bassy I"d prefer Perez. I think Ish, Samb, and Bassy will be gone after this year because we are bringing in better playersBlue Man wrote: ↑1 year ago Am I missing something?

I agree about wanting our young guys to play, but I don't think Lou will... Archie has said multiple times that Lou is not ready yet. Maybe I'm wrong..
I think Bray, Weston, Rory, and Tchikou will still get a lot of minutes with or without Perez since we will play smaller.
Foumena is out. Bilau is out for a while.
I don't think he's coming here, so at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter.

I would also say that often times we see players from lower conferences struggle at the A10 level. I'm sure he's talented, but not A10/high major proven.

Ya, he won't be dropping 18 a game in the A10, but I think he would be a nice piece in the A10 compared to the high majors that are offering him. Especially a team like ours that is lacking scoring.. This kid is not a great shooter, but he has some beautiful moves while driving to the hoop. He makes tough shots.Rhodymob05 wrote: ↑1 year ago I would also say that often times we see players from lower conferences struggle at the A10 level. I agree Stevey, he may not be a star but certainly capable of being a solid or impact player at A10 level.steveystuds06 wrote: ↑1 year agoYa, he won't be dropping 18 a game in the A10, but I think he would be a nice piece in the A10 compared to the high majors that are offering him. Anyway I don't think he will end up here.
Besides Archie has shown this past off season that he isn't looking at a 1 year or in this case maybe a 1/2 year player.

Re: '18 NY SG - Jose Perez (Gardner-Webb —> Marquette)
Who knows how a player will do in a different conference? RJ Cole went from the MEAC to first team All-Big East. There are obviously examples both ways.
I also think it’s more the case that a guy who only has a season left is not all that interested in URI at the moment. I know what Archie said, all coaches say they want to build a program and develop players. They also want to win (this isn’t specifically about Perez but more about who he’ll bring in the next few seasons).

Interesting story from Perez on the process….

His quote about him never really having a home and stability doesn't make sense.ramster wrote: ↑1 year agoGood Call

He brought Gardner Webb to the NCAAs and then chose to leave on his own terms. He had a home and stability there, but didn't want to stay for one reason or another.
