Re: '23 NY PG / CG - Trey Autry (Offer)
If this was a Cox recruit we'd all be yelling, "Only 2 stars? Look at these others offers, all terrible schools! When Cox gets fired, our next coach needs to be going after all 3/4 star kids."
And yes, I know people here will be ok with recruiting a two star because we trust Archie would develop him.
Just funny how narratives would change with a new coach.

Like I said in the other thread, Archie has close connections with his father. He is getting strong interest from Pitt. He is supposed to have a very good shooting touch.Rhody15 wrote: ↑2 years ago If this was a Cox recruit we'd all be yelling, "Only 2 stars? Look at these others offers, all terrible schools! I saw a couple of videos showing long range. Of course they could’ve been lucky shots.Jersey77 wrote: ↑2 years agoLike I said in the other thread, Archie has close connections with his father. My narrative has never changed - gets kids who can shoot at a high level on the team whatever the star level. College scouting services really under rate good shooters.Rhody74 wrote: ↑2 years agoI saw a couple of videos showing long range. The narrative changes because one coach has proven he can operate this way, while the other proved to us that he was inept at it.Rhody15 wrote: ↑2 years ago If this was a Cox recruit we'd all be yelling, "Only 2 stars? We trust because there is past performance to back it up. It is not blind trust in this case.

I know many of us were excited about Chance. I know myself and Jersey wanted Brafford. Both are two-star players. It wasn’t all negative, but yes, I had little faith in Cox's recruiting ability after many misses.
Why would the narrative be the same? Archie Miller has a hell of a lot longer track record than David Cox in regards to identifying and developing talent as a head coach. If he wants this kid, so do I.

Trey didn't have a great shooting event.
UNC commit Simeon Wilcher is the star of City Rocks.
His brother C.J. Wilcher was a top 100 and 4* recruit, currently a sophomore at Nebraska.

Looking at the scholly tracker, if we sign him I am figuring he takes Malik’s spot in 23-24?

The problem with low star recruits is we get no national attention. It doesn't move the needle. It doesn't invite preseason Top 25 consideration.

Re: '23 NY PG / CG - Trey Autry (Offer)
I think this happens every time you have a new coach, and it's always the same story:
we just have to trust that the coach and his recruiters have an eye for talent and are catching the occasional diamond in the rough, so to speak, under the radar. Not everyone is going to have 3 or 4 stars.
We gave everyone this leeway, including Cox, and I guess you can say it didn't work out, but you still have to assume that the coaches know best and know what they are looking for, talent wise. Miller being a great, experienced coach, I think it would be ridiculous not to give him the benefit of the doubt here.
If he says this is the guy they are looking for, he's the guy they are looking for. Sink or swim, he ultimately has to own them anyway, so why not give him the benefit of the doubt?

Re: '23 NY PG / CG - Trey Autry (Offer)
Go back to Cox' last year or two of recruits and look at the programs we were fighting it out with. Autry has offers from a soon to be Big 12 program and two Big 10 programs. Recruiting has picked up

Ya know what attracts national attention...conference championships, NCAA appearances, winning games.theblueram wrote: ↑1 year ago The problem with low star recruits is we get no national attention. It doesn't move the needle. It doesn't invite preseason Top 25 consideration.
I could care less how many stars a recruit has had if this staff thinks they can help them elevate our program I am all in. I also would pay more attention to the programs recruiting a kid over the rankings.

Trey was 16-63 for 28.6%. That’s a hard pass if he is supposed to be a shooter.

Re: '23 NY PG / CG - Trey Autry (Offer)
I think you meant 18-63 which comes out to 28.6% FG as you said.
He was only 5-32 for 3FG for only 15.6% and 5-9 FT for 55.5%
In the 6 games at Peach Jam City Rocks went 5-1. Trey had:
46 points
27 rebounds
12 assists
8 turnovers
EYBL Peach Jam represents the best competition and City Rocks played 6 solid teams:
Houston Hoops
Team Takeover
Florida Rebels
Georgia Stars
The Family
Mean Streets
On the plus side, URI had rarely had players who have started for Top Nike EYBL Teams that qualify for Peach Jam. So just the fact that Trey starts for its Rocks says a lot. Defensive pressure at this tournament is immense as these are top athletes playing for the Championship Peach Jam. My guess is that these teams know Autry is a shooter and they put their their best or next best defensive player to guard him.
He is only a Junior heading into his Senior year. Maybe the off shooting reduces his NIL and the competition from the P5's increasing our chances to land him. Always a bright side. Of course the staff ultimately makes the decision and bottom line is the Wins and Loses but I think Autry would be a good signing for us.

Re: '23 NY PG / CG - Trey Autry (Offer)
He's had a great AAU season. Passing on a kid because he was ice cold in one tough tournament is a bad idea.
He's not just a 3 pt shooter. He's a shot maker. If he ends up on the A10, I think he will be an outstanding player. There is a reason he's been offered by teams like Maryland, Cincy, and Nebraska.

I like kids from top tier programs (High school or AAU) and City Rocks is top of the food chain in terms of AAU quality programs.

I agree with this post too. This reminds of getting Cuttino Mobley from Maine Central Institute back in the day. Even if you didn't know who Cuttino was, the reputation of MCI was rock solid. Same situation with Sean Colson.bigappleram wrote: ↑1 year ago I like kids from top tier programs (High school or AAU) and City Rocks is top of the food chain in terms of AAU quality programs.

Re: '23 NY PG / CG - Trey Autry (Offer)
The difference is that many of Cox's targets' best offer was Rhody. Especially near the end with guys like Chance and Brafford. Their stocks stayed the same as 0-2-star players offered by low majors and us. Well, look at Trey's list now. He's one of if not the top priority for our staff right now. I'm not surprised that his stock has risen, and high majors are offering him. I think the narrative should change when you have a staff that has successfully identified talent in previous roles. Because of his results, we should have had doubts about Cox. I"m sure we will go after some recruits that may be under the radar, but more often than not, I expect us to land kids pursued by other great programs like Trey.Rhody15 wrote: ↑2 years ago If this was a Cox recruit we'd all be yelling, "Only 2 stars? Rhode Island: “URI really focused and placed a value on my ability to shoot the basketball. Even though I didnt shoot it well during Peach Jam, I was one of the top shooters overall in EYBL. They also liked defensively that I am a big guard and that I can defend multiple positions and that I was one of the best rebounding guards in the EYBL also.”
