Phil Matrelli was always up and down though. I hated Martelli but he was a legend. She came in and just said "time to change" and hired whoever. Of course she doesn't want to admit she was wrong and fired a program legend who should have a gym named after him a la Frank Keaney here. So she will ride the Lange train into the dirt.
Phil deserved to go out on his own terms at St Joes.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Martelli's last three years at St. Joe's weren't great, and it wasn't like the guy had a reputation of being a peach and easy to work with. I'm fine with moving on from him, but if that's the case, there's zero justification to keep Lange around at this point. Jordan Hall is a nice player, not a star, and their two best frontcourt guys are seniors.Blue Man wrote: ↑2 years agoI don't know anything about her but I think I hate her.

And she was there for one of them. Just smacks as someone trying to make their mark for the sake of making their mark.RhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑2 years agoMartelli was 64 and had gone 20-34 in the A10 in the previous 3 seasons. And not for nothing, that St Joes team had Charlie Brown as a sophomore, plus a Kimbal/Bynum backcourt that would've been back the next season. Brown probably comes back (instead of going undrafted) and St Joes probably has a pretty good shot in 2020.
Not like Martelli hadn't proven he could get it done. And getting Charlie Brown to commit to St Joes and stay in Philly was a pretty good get.
Went from seasons of 16 wins and 14 wins to seasons of 6 and 7. At least she gets to own this as her own.
I just feel like she sucks and is someone I wouldn't like. So I don't. F her. Hope St Joes sucks under Lange and then she gets fired.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
I'm not super passionate either way and can see this view, but I'm not sure it's as much wanting to make a mark vs. not wanting my career to ride on a mid-60's Phil Martelli being able to turn things around when the last three year were bad. Yeah, maybe he does under the scenario you lay out, but am I ready to risk my career on it?Blue Man wrote: ↑2 years agoAnd she was there for one of them. Weird with coaching vacancies so far....some are being let go that you wouldn't think should be let go, and some are being retained that you would think should be fired.
We had better not be in the latter category.

Was high on Thorr's list when he hired Hurley.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Question: do we really know if he’s a good coach anymore or is he just a big name? Yes, he had some good years at Indiana, but not in his last few years there. It’s tough to win at Georgia, given the gauntlet that is the SEC, but most would have predicted a better outcome for him there. Coaches can lose it just like players can.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑2 years agoWould we even possibly consider him?

Is he still living off that 2003 Final Four run with Dwayne Wade and company at Marquette in many people’s eyes?

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
That's just an incorrect narrative on Crean. His last 3 years at Indiana - NCAAT, NCAAT (to the S16), NIT.JimSidd wrote: ↑2 years agoQuestion: do we really know if he’s a good coach anymore or is he just a big name? Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Tom Crean can coach and a very articulate guy. He's only 55, Yes, he had Dwyane Wade at Marquette, but that's not the only reason he succeeded. His personality has come into question by certain factions. But i don't think he forgot how to coach. He would be a splash hire. And he has the small connection of being in the final list in the 1997 hire before Harrick threw his name in that hat. A call is cheap

Crean is in my top 3 with Miller and Mack. I’d be thrilled with any of those 3.

I agree that Kimani will succeed somewhere. I don't believe he fits here with the program in its current
status. As I said I wouldn't be opposed but I definitely take a guy like Shaheen Holloway over him in a heartbeat

Shaheen Holloway may end up being a great HC somewhere, but would be a massive risk for URI at this point

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Any of the more proven lower tier head coaching candidates. Holloway is in his 4th season at St Peter’s, these are his records by year:
2019: 10-22
2020: 18-12
2021: 14-11
2022: 18-11
Currently 0 NCAA tournament appearances, maybe one if we check back in a few hours. He’s a low scoring, defensive first coach. So maybe that fits the URI mold
I just don’t think he’s done enough at a low level to warrant consideration.
