Atlantic 10 awards 2021-22 - URI shut out
tT was as bad as we thought : Fansided polled 29 writers for A-10 awards. No URI player got a vote for any of the all-conference teams. And, yep, URI was the only team shut out. Walker got some votes for 6th man; Makhel was on all-D team.
"Every season, college basketball has one or two teams that rise from dormancy to relevancy, squads that make long-awaited charges at the NCAA Tournament and become really fun storylines along the way."

Re: Mitchell Twins
Those aren't the official awards though, correct?
I'm thinking Makhel may have an outside shot at 3rd team, but wouldn't be shocked if he gets left off.

Thought maybe Makhel should have made All Defense, but no shock.
Besides that, no surprises.

Luka Brajkovic was the best player in the A-10?
Not that I'm disagreeing, but was there really nobody better?
Or maybe I'm so tuned out I somehow didn't notice that he was the best player in the A-10

Leads the league in PER, tied with Holmes for the lead in win shares.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑2 years ago Luka Brajkovic was the best player in the A-10?

Imho Loyer should’ve gotten POY, but I believe his ankle injury which made him miss like 5 games probably hindered that, also don’t understand why there’s two GW players on 3rd team

When was the last time we were shut out? Just another reminder for of how far the program has fallen off.

Haaaa. You can find the full list here. I'm positive there were some worse ones before 2000, because most old school awards voting consisted of just giving it to the guy who's team won the most games.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑2 years agoHot takeSGreenwell wrote: ↑2 years agoLeads the league in PER, tied with Holmes for the lead in win shares.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑2 years ago Luka Brajkovic was the best player in the A-10?

So, Cox either is not getting good players, not developing them, or both.

I mean, we told dc rams that cox took Jeff off the point and that is a mistake. We told him year 1. So, now we get a new coach.

I lost the trail on the full awards list after the 2008-09 season. We weren't shut out in any season I saw. One or two years where we only had a guy on the all academic team, not a player award, but never shut all the way out that I foundsection(105) wrote: ↑2 years ago When was the last time we were shut out? Re: Atlantic 10 awards 2021-22 - URI shut out
So this got me down a rabbit hole a little bit. Brajkovic leads in PER and win shares this season, so there's at least an analytics case he deserves the award.SGreenwell wrote: ↑2 years agoHaaaa. Looking at the statistics Hassan had a really good case for player of the year in 2016-17, but T.J. Cline was defensible.
Maybe for least deserving you have to go back to at least 2007-08 to get Gary Forbes from UMass. Not top 10 in win shares (Will Daniels was better), not top 10 in offensive win shares, only tied for fifth in defensive win shares (with Kahiem Seawright), second in points per game, tied for fifth in rebounds per game (Kahiem Seawright was better). He had some good raw numbers but he wasn't a really efficient player at all.
Looking at 2004-05, Steven Smith from La Salle was kind of iffy as co-player of the year with Pat Carroll from St. Joseph's. What caught my eye though was the year Scott Hazelton had. 9th in defensive win shares (better than both players of the year), 5th in points per game, 6th in rebounds per game (better than Carroll), 9th in field goal percentage, fifth in free throw percentage (better than Carroll), 9th in effective field goal percentage, just a really great season from him that year.
Shawnta Rogers from George Washington won player of the year in 98-99. Lamar was better in win shares (3rd), offensive win shares (3rd), and defensive win shares (7th). That year Lamar was tied for 5th in points per game, 2nd in rebounds per game, 9th in assists per game, tied for 5th in blocks per game, 4th in field goal percentage, 7th in 2 point field goal percentage (Tavorris Bell was first), 6th in effective field goal percentage, and 6th in true shooting percentage.
In 1991-92 Jeff Kent probably had a better year than player of the year Harper Williams from UMass.
In Kenny Green's player of the year season in 1989-90, he was only 7th in points per game (Eric Leslie was 2nd), but 1st in rebounds per game, and first in blocks per game, with 3 blocks per game more than 2nd place

Re: Atlantic 10 awards 2021-22 - URI shut out
Rhowdy, I was just starting to get into advanced stats when I was an undergrad in the 2003 to 2008 range. At that time, I had to calculate PERs myself via an Excel spreadsheet, and you couldn't even find A-10 only stats online; I had to type them in by hand from media guides. Hazelton was a guy that jumped out, because he drew fouls and shot well from the line. Because Baron played his bench more though, Hazleton "only" logged around 28 MPG. It was something that would drive people crazy with Will Daniels in future years.

Analytics and advanced stats are great and all, but sometimes you have to watch the games and can’t just go off of numbers.
Nikola Jokic is about to have the highest PER for a season in NBA history, which to some in this board, means he had the best NBA season ever?
…and he’s most likely not even going to win MVP.

It's not a binary choice - you can watch the games, and also, consult and consider statistics. After all, there are plenty of things that are almost invincible to the naked eye, or hard to track; or statistics that have been overvalued by conventional wisdom, and don't really correlate to winning. There's a good line about it from Bill James, in one of his yearly books. What's the difference between a .300 hitter and a .275 hitter? Well, about one hit every two weeks. Yet up until the 2000s, one guy would be paid twice as much as the other.Rhody15 wrote: ↑2 years ago Analytics and advanced stats are great and all, but sometimes you have to watch the games and can’t just go off of numbers.

I think it’s become more involved with baseball than any other sport too.
Seems every season there’s 17 new advanced statistics that are shown during games, sportscenter, baseball tonight, etc.
