I'm thinking...if you aren't guaranteed at least two bids per year....yer a mid-major?

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
I've always called the A10 a "high major" conference. The A10 regularly produced multiple NCAA bids so they are certainly not below a mid major and often have competed to be a top 5-7 conference in the country.

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
I think what Rothstein means (assuming anyone can actually find meaning in his trademark hyperbolic drivel), is that in actual competition on the court A10 opponents for the most part are not cupcakes and there are some very solid teams that can play with quite a few of the big boys and absolutely hold their own. But there's really no doubt that the A10 is a mid-major conference.

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
There was a discussion on this sometime back. I think Rothstein's thinking was that there should be an additional ranking of conferences adding High-Mid Major or Mid Major Plus and the A10 should be included in that. Based on his tweet, I guess he still feels that way.adam914 wrote: ↑2 years ago I think what Rothstein means (assuming anyone can actually find meaning in his trademark hyperbolic drivel), is that in actual competition on the court A10 opponents for the most part are not cupcakes and there are some very solid teams that can play with quite a few of the big boys and absolutely hold their own. Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
There are 30+ conferences plus Independents in D1 college basketball. The A10 is clearly a top 15 conference and usually a top 10 conference by all measures.. The A10 usually gets 2 or 3 at large bids to the NCAAT, Each year 15+ conferences only get their conference champion into the tournament. The designation of mid-major or high mid-major is meaningless.
NCAAs or Bust!

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
It’s mid major because it’s a distance behind any of the P5 conferences and the big east. If you want to say high mid major verses just mid major good for you, I guess if you want to break it down into more categories then go for it. Low majors if that’s how they are referred too only get their conference champions in the tourney and in the vast majority of years none of their other teams get even a sniff at a at large bid. The problem is excluding Dayton’s extraordinary team of 2020 the A10 is getting lower and lower seeds when they do get there 2-3 teams into the tourney.

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
I'm not pointing out anyone in particular, but there's so much negativity on the board it's hard to look at. As for the conference label, the A10 has basically been in the same category for the last 25+ years. The only difference now is that we are not winning enough important OOC games as a conference. Hopefully we can make our mark this year. If we beat the big boys we will get respect. Then we can grow from there. I do think we have too many schools in the conference though. Shrink it and get stronger.

Didn't the A10 have one of the most successful OOC seasons ever a year or two ago? Beating up on P5 squads.

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
LaSalle gets a talented big in Matt McFarlane (6'!0") from Wichita State via Colby CC.
He will probably get a waiver because he is transferring to his hometown for personal reasons.

Don't sleep on LaSalle, some feel they may surprise in the A10. They return their top scorers , have some depth, and plenty of height (4 players 6'9" or taller.
As I said before, I think the A10 is very deep this season.

From what I’ve been reading everyone is getting waivers granted. Jon Rothstein keeps using his watermelon seed phrase every time a waiver is granted and it hasn’t been just for school location closer to home.Jersey77 wrote: ↑2 years ago LaSalle gets a talented big in Matt McFarlane (6'!0") from Wichita State via Colby CC.

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
Good news for Duquesne. He could easily be mentioned as an A10 impact transfer.
As a freshman at Chattanooga he led the team in scoring, rebounds, and minutes, and was named Southern Conference POY.
He still has 3 years of eligibility.
Ramster, I like the way Dambrot is rebuilding his roster.
Easley along with fellow transfers R J Gunn, Tre Williams, and freshman Okani can be a force up front for them.

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
The A10 should regain some of its strength this year as a basketball conference.
Looking at the top non P6 conferences, I feel only the AAC will be deeper this season.
Comparing the top 6 programs in each of the strongest Mid-Major conferences:
AAC- Houston, Memphis, SMU, Wichita State, UCF, Cincy
A10 - Bonnies, Richmond, SLU, VCU, Dayton, URI
West Coast - Gonzaga, BYU, Loyola Marymount, St. Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara
Conference USA- Western Ky, UAB, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, North Texas, ODU
MVC- Drake, Missouri State, Loyola/Chicago, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Valparaiso
Mountain West - Colorado State, San Diego State, Nevada, Boise State, Utah State, Fresno State.

Been looking at the 144 Madness Rankings for many years now.
Two teams still to be announced. St Bonaventure and likely VCU
#53 - Richmond - 3rd
#69 - St Louis - 4th
#85 - Davidson - 5th
#102 - Dayton - 6th
#121 - URI - 7th
These are not strong preseason rankings for the A10 based on what I remember in the past. I remember years when there were 9 A-10 teams in the Top 144. We only have 7 in 2021-22 and 4 of the 7 are ranked 69, 85, 102 and 121. Not great.

I would be curious to see how many P6 schools are ranked in the top 144 now as compared to years back that you remember.
The A10 trend may be similar to the other mid-majors in terms of rankings over the years.
Another thing, not sure how far back you are going but the A10 also had Xavier, Butler, and Temple in 2012-13.

I fear the gap will widen between the P6 and the other conferences, especially in terms of getting At-Large NCAAT bids.
If the A10 can't get more than 2 NCAAT bids this season, that will be extremely disappointing and concerning.

77,
- Richmond is only ranked #53 in 144 Madness. That is not good enough to get an NCAA invite. Richmond is not even in the last 4 out for Katz.
- Last year 9-seed St Bonaventure got beat 76-61 by 8-seed LSU in the 1st round. VCU. 10-seed VCU did not play vs 7-seed Oregon in a forfeit.
- Your thinking the A10 is strong this year and should get in 3-4 teams appears overly optimistic.
- Katz has St Bonaventure as a 8-seed and VCU as a 11-seed. Not a strong statement for the A10 at all and this coming from Katz who loves Newport RI.
- 144 Madness Atlantic 10. Two teams still to be announced. St Bonaventure and VCU

Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
Ramster, I believe Richmond is being underrated and should be only slightly below the Bonnie’s. I also feel the A10 will be one of the strongest Mid-Majors this season and yes I will be disappointed if we don’t get more than 2 bids this season. I may be overly optimistic but after looking at the landscape of the upper tier mid-major conferences, I like the depth of the A10. Also if the trend continues that the best these conferences can hope for is 2 bids, we are all in trouble. Re: A10 Outlook for 21-22
I know we discussed some of the top frontcourts in the A10 and debated at length.
Here are my thoughts on the top backcourts:
Ramster, I am probably being extremely optimistic here.
1. Bonnies (4 guards probably start) - Lofton, Holmes, Welch, Adaway.
2. Richmond - Gilyard, Sherod
3. SLU- Perkins, Yuri, Jimerson
4. UMass - Fernandez, Garcia, Weeks, or both Kellys
5. URI- Shep, Ish, EA
6. VCU- Ace/Nunn, Tsohonis
7. Dayton - Elvis, Weaver, also one of the freshman may emerge.
8. GW- Bishop, anybody else.
I think both our backcourt and frontcourt could be in the top 5 A10.
We have good balance and depth but currently missing the star power. I hope some of our players will emerge into that role.
Here are my thoughts on the top backcourts:
Ramster, I am probably being extremely optimistic here.

Add in Forrest (10 pts), D.Bishop (8 pts), Moore, and Brown (21 pts against us last year) all in the backcourt.
Plus Hall, Funk, and Coleman up front, St. Joes could be solid this year.

Starting to think Richmond is going to win the league title over St Bonnies.
They are OLD and experienced, more than the Bonnies.

15, that wouldn't surprise me at all if they did.
Even though the Bonnies have Osun in the middle, Richmond has more proven depth up front with Cayo, Burton, and Golden.
Plus their backcourt of Gilyard and Sherod may be the best guard duo in the league.

Blue Ribbon is out. They have URI at 6th behind St. Bonaventure, Richmond, VCU, Saint Louis, and Davidson. Will Geoghegan has the write-up for URI.
Top backcourts: Bona, Richmond, Saint Louis
Top frontcourts: Richmond, VCU, Davidson

I hope the Mitchell twins and Twan cut that out and make it bulletin board material. If the Davidson front court is better than ours we are going to have a longgggg season.

BAR, not totally surprised by Davidson's pick (BR) in the frontcourt.bigappleram wrote: ↑2 years ago I hope the Mitchell twins and Twan cut that out and make it bulletin board material. If the Davidson front court is better than ours we are going to have a longgggg season.
Many analysts have Lee as an all A10 Player. At 6''7" he can really stretch the floor shooting 40% from 3pt. Also finished second on the team in scoring (13.5 pts) and assists.
Luca Brajkovic is very big 6'10" (250 lbs.) and averaged 11pts, also led the team in rebounding and FG%.
Sam Mennenga also big at 6'9" (245 lbs.) and started 20 of 21 games last season.
I am surprised Dayton wasn't picked higher, many have them as a top 5 A10 team.
Their frontcourt is also very impressive with Camara (top A10 transfer), Amzil, Nwokeji (scored 29 against us), and top freshman recruit Holmes.

I didn’t read the Blue Ribbon article itself, but it seems disingenuous to me to consider Lee a front court player. Brajkovic and mennenga are Davidson’s true bigs.Jersey77 wrote: ↑2 years agoBAR, not totally surprised by Davidson's pick (BR) in the frontcourt.bigappleram wrote: ↑2 years ago I hope the Mitchell twins and Twan cut that out and make it bulletin board material. Lee had the least 2pt attempts of their starting 5 last year, and second to least rebounds. He’s a good 3 pt shooter who happens to be tall

On Davidson's roster he is listed as both guard/forward.
I think our frontcourt has the talent and potential to be ranked right up there. They just need to prove it on the court on a consistent basis.
