Chaney compiled an overall record of 516-253 (.671) and A-10 record of 296-100 (.747) in 24 seasons while at Temple. His Owls made 17 NCAA appearances. Chaney was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. He retired from the game back in 2006.

Remember when he tried to fight Calipari? (I would 100% be rooting for Chaney in that one)
Or the time he sent a goon out on the floor to purposely hurt an opposing team's player?

Yes and I think Temple's next game after the goon incident was at the Ryan Center.

He had a good run. Great career. Didn't always like him, but always respected him - and I think his players did too.
Mobley was fouled.

Thorn in our side but a great coach. Temple was a powerhouse under Chaney.

I hated him and the goons, but he was one of the most respected coaches of his age. He was a boogeyman for us. His players absolutely loved to play for him. He put Temple in a prominent spot, and helped put the A-10 on the map.
Rest in peace to one of the greats.

......if I recall correctly, from coaching lore, he would have practice at 6am, cause he told the players in the real world people get up early to get to work, with adding you won’t be in the pros, so get used to getting up early......

Also he never played cupcake pre-season schedule. Sought out tough opponents. Always liked that about him.

He's still my favorite college coach. Nothing phoney about him. Unlike others, he always said what he felt.
He used to sit alone in the upper corner of Keaney before the game. We always made a point to talk to him. Very approachable.
Also, he always built up the league. For some reason, he always seemed to say nice things about URI when interviewed on national tv (unlike another Philly coach).
PS I hate spellcheck

I love the fact that we made him use the general public restroom in Keaney along with the URI student body. PRICELESS!!

Great coach! Story of when the Owls killed the rams at the dunk when Jerry D coached. He went to the ram locker room and told the players to keep their heads high and not quit. He also made a special point of congratulating Pappy on his senior night.

His players would play there hearts out for that guy.
His voiced would echo in Keaney with the place packed all the way to the tunnels. He was great for the A10 at a time the conference needed exposure. His match up zone was so good.
Unless you had Tyson, cat, Preston shooting the lights out from 3!

Once practice was over, the kids got the rest of their academic priorities taken care of, without having to worry about missing classes for practice or vice versa.section(105) wrote: ↑3 years ago ......if I recall correctly, from coaching lore, he would have practice at 6am, cause he told the players in the real world people get up early to get to work, with adding you won’t be in the pros, so get used to getting up early......
I always rooted for them. Such a great coach, and did things the right way and for the right reasons. His players loved him, and the feeling was mutual. He would go to war for them.
One of the absolute all-time greats.

IIRC, we lost something like 70-45 (and the game was not as close as the score would indicate). After the game, a satisfied-sounding Jerry Duh told the press, “we competed.”
