Re: '13 Turkey SF - Ilker Er (URI Verbal)
It is laughable that people are essentially calling out Hurley's ability to scout HS talent after the insanity this board went through during the Rutgers scare.
If Hurley thinks this kid can play and fill a need then bring him aboard, Hurley has done nothing to make me question his eye for talent.
With EC's ability to get to the rim, Er is going to get a lot of open looks when the defense collapses. This kid sounds like a sniper from 3 and thats what we are going to need when defenses collapse the paint on a Matthews drive or if Biruta, Onyekaba command doubles.
I don't expect him to set the world on fire but he is a solid get in the late recruiting period given what other schools were in the running.
I don't see Er getting off the pine much next year but I think he sets up to be a nice roleplayer down the road for us.
In Hurley I trust and I welcome the addition of Er!

Start at the 10:00 mark...5 scoring plays by Ilker, one thing I noticed is a very quick release...

All of those shots he hit were with a hand in his face and coming off screens and on the move. If thats what he is capable of bringing to this team off the bench, then that sounds ok to me.

Yeah, it seems like with the original info coming from Ilker's coach and this latest info coming from Chris, it is a pretty safe assumption the brakes are being pumped by someone at URI.Iggy1979 wrote:Sounds like Hurley saying wait a minute here.... I'm sure if Ilker's coach thinks he verballed it is because Ilker thinks he verballed. This happens in recruiting a lot, where an offer is not "commitable" and it creates some confusion.
I'm sure if the offer was contingent the staff wishes that they had not announced the commitment publicly. I'll leave his status as committed until we hear something more definitive.

Re: '13 Turkey SF - Ilker Er (URI Verbal)
I hope this isn't the case, Hurley said they were content and didn't need to see anyone else, then to take a verbal contingent on someone else, would contradict. If he saw something he wanted in Florida and offered, take the verbal, but if Ilk wasn't good enough, there should not have been an offer. I know the realities of college basketball recruiting, and I'm kind of preaching, but Hurley wanted us to believe him about his commitment to URI, an 18 year old kid from Turkey playing for his future should be able to know if a commitment is mutual.Iggy1979 wrote:Sounds like Hurley saying wait a minute here.... I wonder if Hurley's offer is contingent on eligibility, which would be understandable.

If he does come here, I wouldn't expect him to come as a redshirt. Dan could probably get another transfer that he knows if he was looking 2 years down the road.

" Hurley said they were content and didn't need to see anyone else,"
Where did this quote come from?
An offer isn't a commitment. Iowa State offers half the world. So if everyone verbaled
they'd have quite a problem.
Maybe they offered and Er jumped the gun, as did his coach? Let's not make
him a martyr just yet.
If they are still shopping, where's all the "Trust Hurley" some of you threw at me?
Let's see how this plays out.

Did someone too good to pass up emerge or not? There's a difference between offering juniors at summer AAU events and offering a player face to face a week before the final signing period. I don't think Hurley would throw out an offer at this point just to have a guy on ice for the hell of it. I think for Hurley to offer on the spot, he liked what he saw basketball-wise, but there's probably other questions.Billyboy78 wrote:Then again, maybe Dan is done for this year...quote in today's paper:"As for recruiting, Hurley says there is a chance he will add another player for next fall but only if someone too good to pass up emerges

Someone might want to break the news to Matt that Hurley commenting on a potential recruit to a member of the media would be an NCAA violation. His lips are sealed.

Re: '13 Turkey SF - Ilker Er (URI Verbal (maybe))
Get real. ALL coaches talk about who they're recruiting,
NCAA violation or not.
Happens every day, everywhere.
When a kid visits, do you really think there's nothing discussed at all?
Just in setting up a visit, people outside the basketball staff have to be
aware of what's going on. Other players, wherever the player is staying, students, etc.
During an AAU tournament, you don't think coaches are talking to each other about players they're
watching?
Believe me, they are.

I believe the original point was that a coach is not going to directly tell a media person the status of a recruit, which was why there was nothing for him to report.

Rod, they can't talk on the record to the media. I don't know what point you're trying to make, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with what I'm saying.

All I'm saying, is, coaches talk off the record all the time to media types
and others.
No, they're not foolishly going on record, but in reality, there's plenty of information
off the record.
I'm not referring to our staff. I've gotten complete scouting reports at AAU
tournaments from coaches that were watching players.

Re: '13 Turkey SF - Ilker Er (URI Verbal (maybe))
Yeah, if you follow football recruiting for a BCS school (I use this example because there is an entire industry built around it) then you quickly realize that there is no possible way so much info could be put out by all these premium sites only by talking to recruits and their families/coaches. They even say things like "the staff feels they are in great shape with [recruit X]." So, yes, obviously there is communication going on, and on some level it benefits the coaches to get info out there that they want out there.
I guess that is a long way of saying that you need to have a really, really good relationship between the coach and the reporter for that info to flow, and a reporter that isn't a confidant of the coach conducting a regular info is wasting everyone's time asking about a specific player.

The subtopic was someone saying it was an NCAA violation to talk about a recruit,
based on a tweet that Billyboy posted.
This is a discussion board.
So, what was off topic about commenting on that?
Actually, the topic of this thread is Er.

Re: '13 Turkey SF - Ilker Er (URI Verbal (maybe))
I took the tweet as Hurley had nothing to say about Er, and he would only say that they have 2 scholarships, and will use them if he finds the right player.
I image the call went like "what can you tell us about Er?"
Dan "As I have said in the past, We have 2 scholarships for next year and we will only use them if the find the right player."
Hence-no update.
