Re: [UPDATE] Hurley Reportedly Signing Extension With URI
I think lots of factors were in play here. Dan knows there will be additional monies coming in from 1) NCAA shares, 2) Exit Fees, 3) New TV Contract, 4) Increased giving and corporate sponsorship, 5) National Marketing Partner.
So with these funds, Dan wants to ensure that they are appropriated towards the areas that so badly need improvement for him to continue to bring in top talent and give his players the best chance to win.
It's just great news!

Looks like Cooley's extension is official.
Only took since November.
Hope Hurley's doesn't take that long to complete.

Does it though?Iggy1979 wrote:I would love to know more details because on the face of it -- renegotiating a contract in its first year -- it does seem odd.
I think everyone realizes how fragile a situation we're in right now.
With Thorr staying, and now looking to the long term future, he realizes that the only way anything happens in all of athletics is with success in basketball. He has HIS guy, and obviously THE guy.
People forget that one of Thorr's best hires was Darren Rizzi - who left after one year for the NFL. Which if anything, is an endorsement that Rizzi was THE guy.
Maybe there's a bit of knowing how important your guy is, and now that you're sure, why not lock him up?
Plus it addressed the rutgers thing without having to address it.

Chris DiSano just said on Fox that hope is for the extension to be done by Friday at the latest.
Also said no rush to fill the assistant's position.

Re: [UPDATE] Hurley Reportedly Signing Extension With URI
Sorry, yes like local news. I caught the middle of a little segment with Chris DiSano. Basically talked about the extension and how Hurley know what he needs to compete and that's why they are working on the deal. Said both sides continue to be in contact and are hoping to get the deal by Friday. It then turned to how Bobby left and how he took Ben Wood with him and how they were in no rush to fill the spot. He reiterated the "Danny's phone has rang a lot about the opening," but that there is no rush since 2013 recruiting relationships have already been formed.TruePoint wrote:Like, local the local FOX affiliate?

Re: [UPDATE] Hurley Reportedly Signing Extension With URI
Sounds like there's going to be a little give and take on this deal.
Dan's either not going to get everything he wants, or it's going to take URI longer to make all the improvements.
Either way, they all know how important this is. Let's just hope we get the announcement of a deal by Friday.

What do you mean by "sounds like"? Have you new information saying this is not going well? That would be contrary to what I understand about these negotiations.rambone 78 wrote:Sounds like there's going to be a little give and take on this deal.

I believe the late signing period starts next week.......An announcement of an extension would be needed if we are seriously hoping for one or two more players to commit......I am sure our recruiting rivals for those kids would be portraying Hurley as out the door otherwise and none would commit here....

Re: [UPDATE] Hurley Reportedly Signing Extension With URI
ATP, no I haven't heard of any problems. Maybe it was DiSano's choice of words "the two sides" that gave me the impression they were going back and forth on this deal.
It just seems that, since these talks have been going on for months, that they would have been resolved by now.
Why take so long? The only answer that I can come up with, is that both parties are not in total agreement yet. Otherwise, URI would have given Dan carte blanche to get what he wants and needs. That's obviously not the case.
The timing now becomes critical here. Like was said, the early signing period starts next week. Dan needs that extension signed, to take to the recruits he is trying to get. Also, whether or not Thorr says so, the Rutgers situation might be forcing their hand.
They need to get it signed, to Dan's satisfaction. Now. It's not about the number of years left on the contract. It's about the program improvements, which are just, if not more, important to Dan staying here.
Maybe they are haggling over a buyout clause? Who knows? But it's something.

'The two sides' = Dan's agent and URI's attorney. This contract is just like any other business deal. The terms have been negotiated over a long period of time. They just have to dot the Is and cross the Ts. Nothing more to it.

You don't promise improvements to assistant coaches pay or building improvements with out first finding a way to pay for them. That takes lots of time.

Re: [UPDATE] Hurley Reportedly Signing Extension With URI
Chris DiSano worded it such that Hurley's representative and the school's representative have been in discussions, and that a signed agreement for the extension was hopeful for Friday. There was no insinuation that there were difficulties or sticking points that would make this process drag on.

Re: [UPDATE] Hurley Reportedly Signing Extension With URI
Rambone is Exhibit A of why people in negotiations try like hell to keep the details and status of the negotiations private. My goodness, man. You can't be so nervous all the time. Of course something could go wrong - something could always go wrong - but there is nothing worrisome or abnormal about the process of getting this extension done based on everything I've seen.
For instance, this winter it looked like Brian Kelly might leave Notre Dame for the Eagles, and the ND AD (Jack Swarbrick, one of the best in the business) agreed to give Kelly some similar program improvements to what Hurley has asked for as part of an extension to guarantee that he stayed (i.e. facility upgrades, scheduling autonomy, assistant coach salary increases). Well, Kelly stayed, and even four months later an extension has still not been formalized and nobody is worried about it. This stuff happens all the time.
Honestly, Rambone, I'm not even sure I follow your concerns from a logic standpoint (particularly your highlighting of the term "two sides" in the context of a negotiations...um, you can't have a deal if there are less than two sides). But I really think you need to relax. We will all feel better when the deal is announced and Rutgers names their new coach, but in the meantime there have been no signs that panicking is warranted.

Re: [UPDATE] Hurley Reportedly Signing Extension With URI
Never use URI and carte blanche in the same sentence. I don't think most people understand how difficult it is for Thorr to get these things done. Being the AD at a university that is not supported well by the state is working with two hands tied behind your back. Yet somehow Thorr has found the money to buy out a coach, hire a hot young coach, fund improvements to the program and take a trip to Italy. Now he needs to find more money.

From there click the GIVE NOW button (top left) and then you fill out the form. There are a few drop down menus where you can allocate your gift. If you want a restricted gift to ONLY men's basketball, you need to choose Basketball - Men (Fast Break).
Then tell them who you are and whip out that credit card and go nuts! Thanks!!

Another thing to Hurley.
Can we attempt to reclaim CFL as a title and apply it to him?
We might as well go in the opposite direction of Baron with everything, and taking back that damn phrase would be one of them.
I'd like to nominate Baron to take on the CFN, or Coach for Never/Nothing/Not and bestow the CFL title on someone who we actually hope will be around for life.

I think "CFL" has to stick with Baron because everytime you think of the term "CFL" you will automatically think of Baron as a habit. Calling Hurley "CFL" means that you will be thinking of Hurley in the same line as Baron.

can negotiate a contract.
Can you imagine our BOG negotiating a coach's contract?

Katz tweeted the link because King is his colleague at ESPN. And "have been mentioned as potential replacements," as King wrote, is a long way from "is a leading candidate" or "is the top choice" or "has been offered the job." King also mentioned Eddie Jordan and Fran Dunphy. Posters misrepresenting the facts like that is what causes so much hysteria on these message boards. Tone it down, BillyBoy.

Can you read their minds? Did they say those three were the leading candidates? No and no. Give it up. Stop trying to manufacture what you perceive to be URI hate everywhere. It makes you and everyone else here look insecure and petty. Be confident. Your school just extended the contract of a coach someone else wants.Billyboy78 wrote:They mentioned those three names only. The likelihood of Dan Hurley staying here will never be 100 percent, and that's not a bad thing. He's always going to be mentioned for other jobs because he's recognized as someone with coaching talent who does things the right way. The last coach that was 100 percent to stay here was Jim Baron, and that's because nobody else would have wanted him. Is a situation like that more to your liking?
