Nah jonah antonio would still be in play. If the rule never gets passed jonah antonio and Allen betrand would technically never play a game together.

Coach Pat Skerry should have absolutely no issue with one of his players going elsewhere to upgrade. After all, what is good for the goose is also good for the gander.

Thanks for the response but I was wondering about all of the other transfers who may need to sit out. I am aware that Jonah is a grad transfer and would not have to sit.DC_Rams wrote: ↑4 years agoNo, Jonah is still in play.DeanDome88 wrote: ↑4 years ago This is a nice addition. Maybe this will lead to # 1 being in too? Although, they probably wouldn't suit up together next season.

Tough to develop an opinion on the likelihood of the rule passing or not with the mixed signals being sent by NCAA. Almost have to just wait and see. Felt more confident maybe a few months ago then do now.

Re: ‘18 PA SG - Allen Betrand (Rhode Island Commit)
I like this pick up. I hope Cox continues to stack the roster with an eye towards a big run in 21-22.
I’m okay with punting on this upcoming season if Rhody comes back with a loaded squad the following year.

Sign the best players if and when you can. They will survive next year, and do ok, maybe not Kansas but won't be Central Connecticut either, no disrespect to them.

Booya! Awesome get by the staff. This is how we need to construct our team going forward, get best players from lower level teams and guys who aren’t happy with minutes from power teams. Add in a couple home grown guys and we have a top 35 team.

Re: ‘18 PA SG - Allen Betrand (Towson Transfer)
I agree an eligible Big would be good but I don’t think there is one out there worth the spot. Play 4 guards/wings next year. Fatts will play close to 40 so we need 6 or 7 guys to fill out 160 mins.DeanDome88 wrote: ↑4 years agoYes he can. At this rate, if transfers can’t play next year, we might be looking at the new walk ones getting more than garbage time minutes.

Re: ‘18 PA SG - Allen Betrand (Rhode Island Commit)
Say what you want about Cox, but the man can recruit. This is a great get by the staff. 6’5”, 200 lb SG who can hit threes and shoots almost 90% from the FT stripe? Yes please! This more than cancels out the Wood decommitment. If the last few weeks are any indication, I don’t think Cox will have much trouble navigating through this new college basketball landscape.

Great get by Cox. I like this kid a ton. I think he is easily on the level of Tyrese Martin. If the transfer rule passes they have a nice core. If not than the following year should be a big one

Re: ‘18 PA SG - Allen Betrand (Rhode Island Commit)
Great pickup.
I would guess we'll fill the last 2 spots with immediately eligible grad transfers or maybe a juco.
So much depends on whether we'll have sports this winter. I doubt there will be a season if no fans can attend.
This isn't pro sports that can survive without fans due to huge TV contracts.

....I didn’t think that’s negative at all?
7 players Currently eligible, and let’s say we get one more to make 8. Throw in an injury or two and a transfer, and walk ons could be playing.

You don’t think there’s a chance a walk on could play minutes if we have injuries or someone leaves mid year??

Bertran looks like a perfect fit . Better find a big for 20-21 though in case transfers aren't eligible or does the staff know something we don't know ?

Re: ‘18 PA SG - Allen Betrand (Rhode Island Commit)
*Sticky this, please.*
6 commits. 1-2 left to go.
Assuming the NCAA transfer rule does not pass, Leggett and Berry will play right away this season (if there is a season).
In 2021-22, they will be joined by the Mitchell twins in the sophomore class.
Also in 2021-22, both Betrand and Martin will be juniors.
The hope is, Cox is able to close the deal on Antonio, he'll play right away one season, a lot I might add, and then there will be 3 scholarships available for the 2021 freshman class for departing players (all backcourt players, allowing for the seamless transition of Betrand and Martin into the mix).
In 2021-22, Harris, Walker, and Johnson will be seniors, setting up another 3 recruit class for 2022-23, and so on and so forth.
2021-22 should be a monster year, a very high expectation year for this team. Senior laden, sophomores with some experience under their belt, having also practiced with the team for a year, immediate junior experience punch, and three impact frosh in learning mode. IF everything falls into place.
** I had to edit that last bit, because they may not necessarily be freshman recruits, with the new landscape of recruiting transfers. It could very well be two transfers, one from a P5 team, one an all Conference player from a CAA team, and one freshman. So, that last part was not technically correct.

Re: ‘18 PA SG - Allen Betrand (Rhode Island Commit)
I think in the new recruiting climate, someone like Coach David Cox can really excel. I also think it is going to be tricky for observers to navigate. This is where the guys who make those elaborate Excel spreadsheets of players coming in and what season they will be eligible for will be very handy, with so many transfers. Right now, it's ok, because we have 4 transfers, but all of their fates will be the same. But once you have a cascade of transfers for different years, we will need the bean counters to help us out.
Also, these rules could change. Again, Cox was able to take advantage of the rule and score 4 high impact transfers. It could be 2 transfers and one freshman for the following class, and then perhaps one transfer and two freshman for the class after that, depending on what the NCAA ultimately does and what decisions they make regarding future transfers.
So, there was a window of opportunity there, and it's still ajar, but for how long? We don't know.
One last point, Cox helped this team in the long run, because he did the # 1 thing any manager needs to do, transcendent of any profession, and that is he increased the number of personnel that actually want to be here. There was a house cleaning, it seems only Fatts is still on the fence and could go either way, but ultimately, the number of players who are now committed to be here, who WANT to be here is very high, and that will only help going forward.
End of rant

Let's also hope that our current freshman recruits will want to stay after this season, or whenever the next season is.
And going forward, the same for any 4 year player we get.
In any event, programs like ours are going to be ever more reliant on transfers.....who will then have to stay if the rule passes.

Your going to need to be a freakin
Advanced math major to keep track of APR.
Or maybe the NCAA cuts the pretense and just scraps the system and the requirements!

Betrand prepared to be “focal point” for URI hoops
PROVIDENCE (WPRI) – David Cox and his staff continue to rework the Rhode Island men’s basketball roster. Towson transfer Allen Betrand committed to URI on Saturday after spending his first two years with the Tigers. The 6-foot-5 200 pound guard told Eyewitness Sports that his decision ultimately came down to two schools: URI and Minnesota. Richmond, Dayton, Butler and DePaul also aggressively pursued the Philadelphia native.
This past season, Betrand took major strides as a sophomore. He averaged nearly 14 points a game and shot 40 percent from deep during CAA play to earn him third-team all-league.
Betrand becomes the fourth transfer to commit to Rhode Island this spring joining Malik Martin (UNC Charlotte) and Makhel and Makhi Mitchell (Maryland). Betrand says he will apply for a waiver that will allow him to play in 2020-21. Whether or not he’s granted immediate eligibility, he still has two years remaining.
