I feel so bad for Dayton fans. The ones I interacted with at the Ryan were quite friendly and just talked about how they were living the dream this year but our time will come. This was their time.

It is sad for all those student athletes that participate in any NCAA spring sport, especially those that are seniors. they will never get the chance to compete again at this level.

Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
That would be ridiculous and unfair given all teams were not given an equal chance to compete until the end to make the tourney. Some leagues already concluded their tournaments while others did not. This year should be given an asterisk and go into the record books like the first two world war seasons.

The NCAA should make up the loss for all its 2020 hosts. It should unilaterally award all these cities the next tournament the first year that sites have not yet been selected. These cities through no fault of their own are taking a big hit.

Dayton should just claim the national title like how Alabama used to do in football. Sucks for them. I feel so bad.

A ref that just recently worked the CAA Men's Basketball Tournament days ago has tested positive for COVID-19. This is just one of the many reasons that made having games continue, even without spectators, not worth the risk.

That Rudy Gobert news from last night was a game changer.
I wonder if there will be pressure put on the PGA Tour commissioner and advisory board tonight to cancel The Players Championship.

Disclaimer: I know that people are sick and dying and what have you and that's infinitely better than what I'm about to say.
I'm screwed. Literally screwed. I need sports in my life to keep myself mentally healthy. I rely on the constantness and dependability of the schedule and games, win or lose. Baseball is my favorite and it's what keeps me going. I love college hoops and the NFL too, but I almost go crazy with only one or two games a week. I'm going to need to figure out something fast.

And we know if the tournament did go on and they got in it it, then they for sure would have lost. Ed still has only 1 NCAA victory to his name and it was a very, very lucky gift from USC.

I can’t believe he mocked the deserve by intentionally touching every microphone and piece of equipment there. Plus he was intentionally careless in the locker room.
Wonder what he touched to specifically get it.

I'm sure millions of people would mess around in the same way.
How many people in that room at that time would be that outraged?
Just a few days ago the tragedy of this event was still quite foreign and fringe to the vast majority of us.
So putting down Rudy Gobert with perfect 2020 hindsight is to me, worse than his insensitive joke.

I do appear to have a consort for the first time in my life, so that might be helpful. If you told me even last month that the week before selection Sunday and two before Opening Day that I'd have a girlfriend and not be looking forward to sports I'd say you were insane. And I know which option I'd take in a heartbeat and it's not this one.
I hear ya tho...baseball is my favorite, for the same reason. This sports ixnay just craters my 'things I like' schedule.

Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
An excellent article from the DaytonDailyNews
Such a shame to have Dayton Ranked #3 in the Nation with the best player in College Basketball ready to show the world their talent
The Atlantic 10 doesn't get opportunities like this very often
Some excerpts...........
BROOKLYN, N.Y. —
Roni Toppin kept repeating the same three words: “It’s so sad.”
That summed up the day for her, her sons Obi and Jacob, the Dayton Flyers, the Atlantic 10 Conference and all of college basketball. The cancellation of the Atlantic 10 tournament and then the entire NCAA tournament (men’s and women’s) because of Coronavirus fears — stunned everyone on Thursday.Maybe no one one felt the shockwaves harder than the third-ranked Flyers, whose historic season came to an abrupt end.“I’m heartbroken,” Roni said. “I’m just hoping they’ll change their minds. I know they’re not going to, though.”
Roni spoke to the Dayton Daily News by phone from the school where she teaches in New York City. She had not seen her sons since they arrived in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Wednesday. She didn’t want them leaving their hotel rooms any more than they had to.Roni planned to spend Selection Sunday with Obi, the Dayton star. The Flyers would have held a watch party on the way to the airport if they advanced to the A-10 championship game Sunday. Instead, everything came to a end just before No. 8 seed Massachusetts and No. 9 seed Virginia Commonwealth tipped off in the first second-round game Thursday. Dayton would have played the winner.Obi was still in denial when his mom talked to him not long after the A-10 announced it was cancelling the tournament, joining the Big Ten and Mid-American conferences, among many others. The NCAA tournament decision followed several hours later.
“Obi said, ‘Mom, maybe it’ll change,’” Roni said. “‘They keep making different decisions every hour.’ He said maybe tomorrow they’ll put it back on, but once it’s off, it’s off. They kind of cancelled all of basketball.” The unbreakable bond between Toppin, Crutcher The end of Dayton’s season means Toppin’s college career likely is also over. He has not announced his decision to enter the NBA draft, but that’s just a formality. He’s a likely lottery pick after leading Dayton to a 29-2 record and 20 straight wins to close the regular season.Just five days before the cancellation of the A-10 tournament, Toppin walked off the court at UD Arena to thunderous applause after scoring 27 point on Senior Night in a 76-51 victory against George Washington. His roommate, Dayton’s second-leading scorer, Jalen Crutcher, scored 21. Roni looked forward to him playing on a larger stage in the NCAA tournament.“This was his chance to show the country that he was worthy, like not just against the Atlantic 10,” she said. “I feel like it was Jalen’s chance, too. People underestimated him, and he knew they had to show the world what they had. We had those conversations. It’s so sad.”

ATPTourFan wrote: ↑4 years ago Obvious nepotism hire Gavitt failing to adequately lead? Imagine that!
Big East commissioner Val Ackerman, however, wasn’t as magnanimous and pretty overtly blamed lack of communication from the NCAA for the ill-advised decision to tip off Creighton-St. John’s.
“We had NCAA staff, who we’ve been looking to for guidance on a video conference with our presidents a few hours ago, and they did not let on that even they knew that some of these moves were being made by these other conferences,” Ackerman said at a news conference. “So that’s kind of how the last 24 hours have gone.”
This says it all..............
On the brink of perhaps the most important decision yet for the league in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, logic dictated that league officials would have been in constant discussions with Gavitt, the NCAA’s senior vice president for basketball and the point man for everything related to the tournament.
But when that topic was raised, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details were supposed to be private, the answer was surprising.
Nobody had heard from Gavitt in weeks.
Amazing article ATP.
Doesn't look like Gavitt even tried to lead.
Even Val Ackerman of the Big East, Gavitt's made disparaging comments about the NCAA Staff.
In times of crisis Leaders step up and Leaders emerge
Also you see people like a Dan Gavitt step back and withdraw.
Gavitt should have built over the years relationships with the League Commissioners. It doesn’t appear that he has accomplished that.
Amazing that nobody has heard from Gavitt in weeks. He has not been seen representing the NCAA during this weeks turmoil even when the Conference Tournaments were being cancelled.
Reminds me of Jon Marrinato who was way over his head with the Big East and got fired. Gavitt is way over his head. It’s clearly showing. He has retreated to where nobody is involving him. The Conferences are making their own decisions while communicating with one another.

Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
I really feel for Dayton in this situation. The Atlantic 10 gets hurt big time from this as well with the loss of exposure and money. When I think about the 2 really great A-10 teams I've seen in my lifetime. 1988 Temple and 2004 St. Joes we were able to see how far their talents were able to take them in the tournament. Both making it to the final 8. I really thought Dayton was going to make the final 4 this year. I said it back in early January. Now we'll only be left with wondering just what would have happened to them in the tournament. When we compare them to those other 2 great teams we'll never have that final result to talk about in the comparison.

Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
Ackerman and the Big East looked really bad in having their game tip off yesterday when every other major conference had already pulled the plug. They took a massive PR hit and look to be shifting the blame to an apparently rudderless NCAA basketball operation run by Dan Gavitt. Other conferences seem to support Ackerman's take on the NCAA. It would appear that it may be time for Gavitt to go. He has shown no leadership during this crisis.
