Walker Availability
This is a concern. Shocking with the easy of so many waivers for players that transferred after the season.

Am I alone in having thought that this was already resolved like months ago? Not sure if I misheard something or misunderstood something or just assumed it at some point.

Re: Walker Availability
This news is actually very critical to our OOC success and a bid for NCAA.
Obviously he is a little bit of a question mark at the moment but he is certainly needed for giving Cyril and Harris some breathing spells.
Dont take it as a good sign that we dont have the waiver yet.

Yeah, I had asked about this in the off-season thread a week ago. I still think it’s just a technicality and will probably be fine.

That's some good perspective on how many are actually without a ruling yet. I was worried he was one of the few and there was something else going on.

Can't remember if it was on "Last Week Tonight" or something else, but I think the issue is typically that the NCAA doesn't have nearly as many enforcement and compliance officers as it should. You know, for an organization that allegedly cares about amateurism because they can't possibly pay players, despite an $8.8 billion TV contract.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑4 years ago So, about 65% of the cases haven't been ruled on yet. Re: Walker Availability
How do guys like Braxton Key for UVA get a waiver so fast?
The guy played at Alabama in 17/18 played every game and somehow got a damn waiver immediately to play on UVA's national championship team.
There are many other similar examples of power teams being able to do things like that.
I mean Walker got out of a bad situation and his life has improved in this new environment.
Didnt even play for Gtown last year.
What gives?

Re: Walker Availability
Some players get the waiver immediately for family situations. Heron for St. John’s last year.
David Beatty immediate waiver at LaSalle surprised my last year because he played games for South Carolina the year before.
Omar played the entire season and got an immediate waiver to play at Hofstra. I think that was related to a family member’s health.

Re: Walker Availability
The previous school can also matter, like if a school admits they basically ran off a guy.
Omar’s immediate eligibility was a combination of things. Walker was kicked off the team, so nothing’s getting held up by Georgetown.
It’s not always the big schools that get the breaks. As mentioned above, there does seem to be an issue with staffing and resource allocation. He was probably exaggerating a bit, but I was once told it’s “basically two people surrounded by a shit-ton of paperwork.”

Goodman’s totals from his previous tally don’t add up (went from 114 total to 121 total).ace wrote: ↑4 years ago The previous school can also matter, like if a school admits they basically ran off a guy.

The bad news is that out of 40 previous decisions 4 were rejected (10%) and out of the last 14 decisions 4 were rejected (29%).
It seems if Cox felt this was a risk in the Spring, they should’ve put more effort into using the open scholarship to get a serviceable big man.

Re: Walker Availability
He is definitely eligible as soon as the First Semester is over (once grades are released). That should be sometime between Dec 21-27.phipsiGD'11 wrote: ↑4 years ago If hes not eligible for fall semester could he become eligible for the Spring?
His first game would be either Dec 27 vs W. Kentucky or Dec 29 vs Middle Tenn.
Edit: W. Kentucky is on Dec 21st.

Final day of exams is Dec 20th and exam make up day is Dec21st.

Granted I don’t know how this all works but why does the ncaa punish these kids ?
Let them play if they are eligible
67 undecided ?.. well decide already
My goodness
Make a decision and allow the eligible kids to play day 1
I don’t get this at all
It’s effin 67 - not 670...
Losers ncaa who just want to pocket their wallets and don’t care about these kids who are padding them

Re: Walker Availability
Cox and staff have known about Walker and Sheppard's situation for months.
Just that the NCAA is dragging their feet as usual.
Walker will be eligible worst case scenario late December.
Sheppard's status isn't as clear.

Re: Walker Availability
What would the "waiver" be for Sheppard? He was a year in JC so it's not a transfer situation right? If it's grades you either qualify or not I thought. Must have to do with his transcripts, classes etc.

Re: Walker Availability
Most of this information is already known but just to clarify-
https://www.zagsblog.com/2018/11/20/ant ... de-island/
“Per multiple sources familiar with the situation, Walker was involved in several altercations, stemming from a dispute with another Georgetown student athlete from a different Georgetown athletic program. At least two of the aforementioned altercations became physical, and Walker injured his hand in the process.”
Walker was dismissed from the basketball program in October. Did he leave school at that time, too?
——————————
https://247sports.com/college/east-caro ... 117891940/
For Sheppard, the issue is academics. He played and was eligible in 16-17. He was enrolled at ECU in 17-18 but did not play and seems to have left not in good academic standing.
“Despite missing this entire past season (17-18) due to a violation of team rules combined with his academic standing, Sheppard was initially seen as a candidate to stick on the roster following Dooley’s introduction. He went to the coach’s first team meeting, but per sources, another rules violation led to his recent dismissal.”
——————————
I’m not posting this to make anyone look bad or to say they shouldn’t have been recruited. I’m all for second and third chances, outside of certain circumstances, but it does complicate things when it’s 2 of the 12 roster spots. If I had to guess, based on following basketball and the waiver game in general but not any specific information, Walker will be eligible for the start of the season. I have no idea what to think with Sheppard.

Re: Walker Availability
You could see spells of a big lineup for Rhody. One of Jeff and Fatts will be on the court playing PG all 40 minutes in any close game. When one of them sits we will most likely see Tyrese and Dana on the floor together. Defensively one of them will have to cover the opponent’s SG. This is probably one of the reasons Cox wanted Dana to trim down and get quicker and told Tyrese to focus on improving his ball handling this summer.

Tyrese at the 2 will be a nightmare for opposing defenses.
However when he's on D, that's a question.

Re: Walker Availability
Rasheem Dunn was denied a waiver at St. John’s. He last played in 17-18 and then transferred to Cleveland State, where he sat out for the 18-19 season because of transfer rules. Then, the Cleveland St. coach was fired in July of 2019, so he left for St. John’s, committing in August of 2019. So now he has to sit out two straight years? None of it makes sense, except that the Cleveland State AD is horrible. For a while, KI was going to be one of the last players to receive a waiver, and everyone was going to have to sit out, no matter what. That doesn’t seem fair, but neither does the current approach. Walker couldn’t have stayed at Georgetown, so maybe that helps?

You have to love a process where one of the least trusted institutions in the country is making decisions with no transparency and no accountability. If there is one thing in life that gives me comfort, it’s an organization with billions of dollars in revenue deciding the futures of its unpaid laborers in a black box.

Some eligibility waivers are easy and some are not easy. It is not FIFO. Some schools are better at assuring that the paperwork is in on time and complete. Some times there are games being played between the new school and the athlete. It s not the NCAAs incompetence.

Re: Walker Availability
The rules are pretty black and white - If you transfer your must sit for one full year before playing again. While I think we all want consistency, I don’t think the NCAA owes it to anyone to provide color on a ruling that is an exception. Frankly, teams should be preparing teams/fans for the worst and working through these exceptions privately to tame expectations. However, I do agree that I’m not sure why the pace on these is so slow. I’m guessing it has more to do with back and forth, information collection, etc., but it’s still tedious.TruePoint wrote: ↑4 years ago You have to love a process where one of the least trusted institutions in the country is making decisions with no transparency and no accountability. Personally I’m in favor of less of these waivers, not more. If it were me, player is only granted waiver if coach leaves or is fired. If a kid gets thrown out of school, or voluntarily leaves a school, or wants to play closer to home, should be a high threshold to play immediately.

Re: Walker Availability
Do you monitor every waiver application?
All of the reporters that cover college basketball have negative comments about the process.
Fyi, GTown is not contesting Walker’s waiver request and the application was filed in May.
