Nice piece from Chris, as always. Jacob seems like a chill, laid back kind of guy. I like how honest he was in his assessment of his own game.

You can tell from that video that he is still growingKevanBoyles wrote: ↑5 years ago Just saw Jacob dunk ball on IG. Looks like he is still growing to me.
He was listed at 6’7”. Do you think he wouldn’t be able to dunk? How tall is he know in that dunk?

I'm hoping this kid is a diamond in the rough. Looking good for a freshman. A 6'8 guard can do wonders for a team. Can't wait for November.

Checkout Toppin’s IG Story (jtoppin_21). A picture with him and his brother Obi. Not much height difference and I could see him building up his strength over the next year to give Rhody a Obi look alike. If he keeps growing he could be a PF.

If the coach REALLY thinks he's "someone you build a program around" freshman or not he will be given the chance to show that in games. I know we are deep but do you sit "that kind of potential player" on the bench all game. Maybe 1-2, 2-4 min stretches a game can give him experience through out the year and keep him happy also (he seems to be level headed but any kid might get frustrated sitting on the bench 39-40 mins every game). This is all on the coach's evaluation of him not on mine (I know nothing - SS) but if he's right it will really help in the coming years after this year continue the success we hope to have.

This isn’t Kentucky deep we are talking about. We were the worst three point shooting team in the country last year. If he is as good as he looks or people think he will be than Toppin will be on the court.wgracie99 wrote: ↑4 years ago If the coach REALLY thinks he's "someone you build a program around" freshman or not he will be given the chance to show that in games. Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Rhode Island Commit)
My hope is that both Toppin and Hammond shoot their way into decent minutes by mid-season.
That would make us very difficult to guard in a 1-in, 4-out type lineups.
It would also allow for a high level pace for a full 40 minutes.
If this roster pulls together, this will be a very exciting year.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Rhode Island Commit)
Don’t read too much into Coach Cox saying Toppin is someone you can build a program around. Steve was going to ask Cox about each Freshmen but in Steve’s inept interviewing skills he never got to the other two Freshmen. I believe Cox would’ve said the same thing about the other two. Cox is a very positive person and nice words to pump up a player don’t cost anything.
I don’t think the Freshmen are going to get zero minutes. I could see them getting five minutes especially against the weaker teams.
I am surprised about DC’s “best all around shooter” comment. I think Jeff Dowtin and Sheppard will have something to say about that. If you are talking pure FG%, typically a big man leads that category because of putbacks & layups/dunks.

I just hope he grows a mustache and fully commits to the retro NBA look.
I’m way more bullish on Toppin than I was Mading. I don’t remember the exact timeline of Mading’s transfer and Toppin’s commitment but would happily trade Mading for Toppin every time.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Rhode Island Commit)
I apologize if anyone has made this comparison before, but I think a decent comp to Toppin (instead of his brother) is Terance Mann of FSU (Drafted 2nd round by the Clippers).
Mann is 6'7 215 with a top 10 vertical during the NBA combine
Toppin, too, is listed at 6'7 with an insane vertical
Mann's stats don't jump off the page, but a 6'7 athlete that can defend numerous positions will always have a shot in the NBA.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Rhode Island Commit)
So, I see the picture of his vert, which is absolutely absurd. But what is the actual number of his vertical? Anyone know exactly how many inches? That has got to be close to 45, right?Section104 wrote: ↑4 years ago I apologize if anyone has made this comparison before, but I think a decent comp to Toppin (instead of his brother) is Terance Mann of FSU (Drafted 2nd round by the Clippers).

Toppin hit something like 36 and change at the "combine" a week or so ago...the best on the team was Fatts...he hit slightly over 41

When you think of Jacob’s development realize he is the age that Obi was redshirting at Dayton.

I really liked this kid in HS too. After redshirt last year he’s 1-18 from 3 this year.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑5 years agoTyler Bertram could have been that guy. I did see him play. I think he'll be a better college player than 4 McGlynn was.TruePoint wrote: ↑5 years agoI see gquys that can shoot playing for 16 seeds in the tournament who were apparently not recruited by anyone or highly rated as HS players. The need for a shooter is so bad that if they find one, I don’t care if he is a top-1,000 recruit. I’m not saying Toppin is that guy - I haven’t seen him play at all. Just making a general observation.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Rhode Island Commit)
Shooting is a fickle thing. Assuming mechanics are sound so much of it comes down to confidence and recognizing a good shot from a bad shot. Look at Fatts, one of the worst statistical 3 pt shooters in the country last year and this year near 38% from 3. Anything near 40% is excellent.
