Article from Zags covering Prosecutors’ Closing Argument
“When you get caught on tape paying coaches envelopes full of cash, well that’s very hard to explain away,” Solowiejczyk said, referring to videotape shown during the trail of multiple coaches, including Richardson, accepting money.
Through the presentation of video, transcripts and bank records Friday, the prosecutor argued Dawkins’ whole defense “was just a lie.”
Dawkins has maintained he never paid any coaches and thought the whole concept was “idiotic.” He has said he’s in favor of paying college players, but that paying coaches yielded no benefits and was too risky.

Re: Major NCAA Recruiting FBI Investigation
From what I can figure a reporter tweeted that there was no investigation underway at Arizona based on this release from the school.
On Saturday, the University issued a statement on the reports that the NCAA had begun an investigation.
“The University of Arizona is correcting inaccurate media reports. Any reports stating that the NCAA has either “started” or “launched” a new investigation at the University of Arizona are entirely false. To be clear, we will continue to cooperate fully with any NCAA proceedings in the best interest of the University and the men’s basketball program.”
Yesterday the Arizona Star published an article that refuted the original UA statement.
An NCAA investigation into the University of Arizona men’s basketball program is underway, school officials confirmed to the Star on Friday. Arizona had not previously confirmed that the program was being investigated. However, Yahoo quoted unnamed sources on Feb. 4 saying that investigations had begun at the UA and other schools. When asked to clarify if the reference to “investigations” included one from the NCAA, university spokesman Chris Sigurdson later said in an email on Friday that “there is an NCAA investigation underway.” UA issued a statement Saturday refuting other reports published Saturday that might have implied the investigation was new. “We will continue to cooperate fully with any NCAA proceedings in the best interest of the university and the men’s basketball program,” UA said. -Bruce Pascoe, Arizona Daily Star.
It seems to me the UA statement was misleading. Their point is that it isn’t a new investigation so Yahoo’s report that the NCAA “started” or launched a “new investigation” is incorrect.

Does this start a trend? If it is successful, it will put a major dent in the one-and-done college player. Either the NBA will change the Draft rule and allow players to enter right out of high school or more top players will play a year overseas.
It will change the recruiting philosophy of Kentucky and Duke very quickly.

I doubt it starts a trend, it worked for Brandon Jennings (even though he hated life overseas) and definitely didn't start a trend. The biggest thing is those guys will also be looking to build a brand which happens FAR easier at the collegiate level than in some overseas league. The publicity the top freshmen get from ESPN, CBS, and Fox Sports al outweigh anything players of the same age get overseas.

Re: Major NCAA Recruiting FBI Investigation
Play well overseas for a couple of years making money doing it, then get a good offer from some NBA team. That's the plan I guess.
Sort of like the baseball player who chose to go to Japan for 6 years instead of getting drafted. He'll make more money over there, and if he's good he'll be back in the states making big bucks by age 25.

Easy to talk about brand etc but these kids don’t have money. RJ is projected to make $1 million in the one year between his contract and sneaker deal. That is immediately life altering. Then he will get a big money NBA contract.

Re: Major NCAA Recruiting FBI Investigation
CBS just reported at least six schools will receive penalties stemming from the FBI investigation including “2 high profile programs”....also says there are other active investigations still ongoing and the fallout won’t end with this wave of penalties. Said the schools will be notified in next couple of weeks. Gotta think either LSU or arizona is on that list.

Re: Major NCAA Recruiting FBI Investigation
Are these NCAA penalties? I'll believe it when I see it.
Probably "lose one scholarship for one year" slap-on-the-wrist penalties.
With the FBI investigation as back up, they should ban the head coaches involved for life.
Then put a four year ban on NCAA tournament play for the schools. Example time.

So, why doesn't the NCAA grow a pair, step in and say that NCAA coaches cannot attend Nike sponsored AAU events?
Penalty for violating the restriction is a 2 yr ban from the NCAA tournament.
You know, actually DO something about it.

This is quite interesting....
"They include detailed plans to pay then-high school stars such as Zion Williamson and Romeo Langford, line-item accounting of alleged payments to the people around eventual No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton, and an acknowledgement by a top Nike executive that “the perception and resulting reality is that we dictate where players go to school.”

Kansas,,,,
The NCAA's enforcement staff has charged the University of Kansas with lack of institutional control and Jayhawks basketball coach Bill Self with head coach responsibility violations, a source confirmed to ESPN on Monday.
Those are among the most serious charges levied against Kansas and Self in an NCAA notice of allegations that the university received on Monday. The Jayhawks are charged with multiple violations, including allegations related to the school's football program under former coach David Beaty.
Soooo.....with the right timing of football...does that mean, maybe, the game we lost against them a couple years ago gets credited as a "W"?

Re: Major NCAA Recruiting FBI Investigation
9 months...that's some funny stuff.
I would assume Kansas will shortly "self-impose", so as to show their remorse and contrition start the bidding process?
Will there maybe be enough teams eventually legislated out*...to improve Rhody's chances? I mean, Kansas could conceivably ban themselves this year, that opens a spot, anyone else?
*Need to come up with a name for the "thinning of the field due to teams getting waxed by the FBI thing".
Maybe we say a team got "5-0'd"...or they were a "5-0 beneficiary"... "if not for the 5-0 that got laid on UK, this team might not have made it in..."

Georgia Tech just was put on probation and ruled ineligible for the 2019-20 ncaa tourney due to “impermissible benefits” that occurred during Josh pastner’s tenure.
Seems like Kansas, Arizona should end up with same fate. But they are blue bloods so time will tell.

Which is obnoxious because the outcome is obvious -- any of those programs who have fringe NCAA Tournament chances 3/4 through the season will self-impose a postseason ban, and then the NCAA is stupid enough to go "We were going to ban them for a year so it's all good." It's the same thing that happened to Syracuse in 2015. Self-imposed sanctions are a farce unless it's for future seasons.bigappleram wrote: ↑4 years ago Same thing is going to happen to Arizona for sure. Creighton as well. The NCAA is required to give the school three months to respond from receipt of Notice of Allegations. Due process. The three months response time seems fair.

I'm confused by this article as they dance around the point that Kansas may have more than 90 days but don't confirm one way or the other.

Agree with a lot of what Dauster says here...
Yes, the NCAA is ridiculous and also, yes, in general, people who have a lot in common with Self and Wade and Miller often never face consequences and they know it.

Re: Major NCAA Recruiting FBI Investigation
As expected, the NCAA and FBI came out looking bad based on this doc. Of course this was primarily told through 1 person's POV (Christian Dawkins), so there's that. But there is no way around the damning wiretaps with Sean Miller and Will Wade where they flat out discuss paying players. The FBI could have taken down the whole system, and instead framed a middle man and did nothing to substantively change the recruiting game.

Nor did they seem to have anything on Pitino in this particular case. Also, it appears that Preston was in the wrong place at the wrong time and had it not been for his Saginaw, Michigan ties probably would still be at Creighton. It's very unfortunate for him and hopefully he will resurface at some point.

Sill to this day I have zero idea how Will Wade is still coaching.
The guy is a pathological liar, looks like a phony, talks like a phony, and just has this smug look on his face that screams "I got away with all of it and there's nothing you can do about it."
Rothstein calling him "America Gangster" is a perfect nickname though.
