Looking at the videos available, a good player comp for Ty Rogers is Dillon Brooks (who we also recruited, I believe).
Let's keep that Michigan connection going at URI!

Let’s flash forward a few years. You get your first NBA paycheck. What’s the first three things you buy?
I’m gonna put half back in the bank, and majority of the rest I’m gonna invest in real estate.
Haha, smart guy.

Another big reach for us, probably stay in the Midwest or Great Lakes area.

With that group it will be hard to get him but we may be setting up for the a transfer rebound in the future game.

Yes, which is why you never stop recruiting at the Prep/HS level, always keep those relationships and connections going, regardless of the new transfer rule.raminwarwick wrote: ↑3 years ago With that group it will be hard to get him but we may be setting up for the a transfer rebound in the future game.

TJ Buchanan is an excellent communicator and representative of the URI Basketball Program. Knows Michigan High School basketball very well. Never know, URI could surprise.Jersey77 wrote: ↑3 years agoYes, which is why you never stop recruiting at the Prep/HS level, always keep those relationships and connections going, regardless of the new transfer rule.raminwarwick wrote: ↑3 years ago With that group it will be hard to get him but we may be setting up for the a transfer rebound in the future game.

This is the type of kid we see playing in the second weekend of the NCAA tournament a few years from now and bump the thread to remember when URI was briefly in on him.

Early word continues to be that he won’t make it out of Michigan, but I think it’s fun when they’re in the mix with schools like this

Would be pretty funny if this kid commits here and Cox uses it as leverage for an extension only for Rodgers to transfer later.

Re: ‘22 MI SF - Ty Rodgers (Offer)
Actually, I give Cox a lot of credit for getting a kid as highly ranked as Rodgers on campus given our mid major status, trajectory of the program and Cox tenuous longterm job status.
Cox high school recruiting has always been one of his best attributes. The retention and development once they are on campus is what needs to be improved.

Re: ‘22 MI SF - Ty Rodgers (Offer)
You can give him credit, but this is obviously a TJ recruit. Cox's job is now the closer once he gets the recruit on campus, something Dan was great at. It seemed that once Dan got a guy on campus, he got him. Cox gets the credit for recruiting some of those kids like Dowtin.STC wrote: ↑2 years ago Actually, I give Cox a lot of credit for getting a kid as highly ranked as Rodgers on campus given our mid major status, trajectory of the program and Cox tenuous longterm job status.

Re: ‘22 MI SF - Ty Rodgers (Offer)
I think it is pretty cool that we are able to get a top 50 recruit to visit, considering he has so many P6 offers and can only take 5 official visits.
247 has one of their experts on crystal ball predicting 100% Michigan
Rivals has him 40% Michigan State.
Not sure if he cancelled his visit to Xavier this past weekend. They do have commitments from 4* SF Tyrell Ward and 4* SG Kam Craft.
I think his other visits were to Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, UConn, and now URI.

Yes of course, but it's nice we are in the discussion.
He is a huge longshot for us, but at least we identified him early, give our staff credit for that.

I do give them credit. I'm happy he's visiting. I'll be thrilled if we get him. But as the old saying goes.....Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Another thing to keep in mind, with all the player movement in the portal these days, it's nice to have a recruit like this showing strong interest in us.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑2 years agoI do give them credit. He probably will commit to a P6 school, but if it doesn't work out for him there, we could be a good transfer destination for him.

Re: ‘22 MI SF - Ty Rodgers (Offer)
77,
Where is your confidence? Rogers is better than a “huge long shot”. The staff needs to land players like Rogers just as the Hurley regime did.
Top 100 players we have landed in Hurley/Cox era:
Jordan Hare
EC Mathews
Iverson via transfer from Memphis
Robinson via transfer from Indiana
Jared Terrell
Jermaine Harris
URI has the TJ Buchanan connection to Michigan, plus the EC Mathews connection. Show tapes of how EC garnered early playing time, his success in Europe, how he continually improved his overall game and especially his shooting percentages.
Big fish in a small pond - Rogers can come in and quickly enter the starting line up.
Show examples of Top 100 players who languished on the benches of Big 10 teams, and/or who transferred because of lack of playing time or general unhappiness
Show examples of A10 players in the NBA now
Have Lamar Odom talk to him about how much he enjoyed URI and how much he enjoyed returning to URI later in life to clear his mind, relax and practice/workout.
We can land Rogers.

I just have a feeling he will decide to stay close to home, especially under these current circumstances.ramster wrote: ↑2 years ago77,

We can land Rogers.
It will be difficult for him to pass up UM or MSU.
I don't believe EC was heavily recruited or even offered by them.
Besides when we got EC, Murphy was the lead recruiter, let's not put TJ in his class yet.
Believe me, I think it would be great if we can land him, but not over confident on this one
Again, I hope he proves me wrong.

Murphy was an assistant but Hurley closed the deal on EC Mathews just like David Cox should close the deal on Rogers. If we lose Rogers I’d not point to TJ not being in Murphy’s class yet.Jersey77 wrote: ↑2 years agoI just have a feeling he will decide to stay close to home, especially under these current circumstances.ramster wrote: ↑2 years ago77,

Cox needs to land some good Freshmen recruits here in his 4th season at the helm.
Hurley brought in EC Mathews and Hassan Martin early on and built around them. They were picked as 2 of the top 5 incoming freshmen to the A10. Need to see some exciting incoming freshmen recruits and/transfers.
Named by Dave Telep as one of the Top Five '13 recruits in the Atlantic 10:
EC Mathews
Hassan Martin
Josh Brown
JeQuan Lewis
Isaiah Watkins

Ramster, yes it was DH who closed the deal, he was the HC, but If it wasn't for Murphy it never would of happened with EC.ramster wrote: ↑2 years agoMurphy was an assistant but Hurley closed the deal on EC Mathews just like David Cox should close the deal on Rogers. Cox still needs to prove himself here, like Hurley did. Hurley did have the name recognition and pedigree when he came here along with some previous HC experience.
Cox did land some some previously high ranking transfers such as Walker, the twins, and Carey who has yet to prove himself.
Let's hope he can build around Ish, and the twins like Hurley did with EC and Martin.
Hopefully Tres, Chance( next season), and Samb can also provide a good foundation going forward.
Getting Rodgers to commit here is a much tougher hill to climb than it was for Hurley with EC.
He is a top 50 recruit and you have to pry him away from 2 extremely powerful in-state programs.
Also Hurley did have Murphy as his point man.
I am actually pleasantly surprised we are one of his 5 official visits.
