Who is that young kid that we were/are recruiting from California? I remember hearing about it a few months back, but can't remember his name.

I wouldn’t mind if one of the new guys had some NYC/Jersey/Philly connections. Capitalize on the success of Fatts and especially Cyril (The Patrick School), even Hassan.
Mike Rice, though. Still a complicated situation.

It’s tough to get Top 150 to mid majors. It can be done but not frequently
For class of 2019 A10 got 2 players from the top 150:
#80 Tre Mitchell to UMASS
#91 Bones Hyland to VCU

Which is the reason the conference was so bad last year. If the conference doesn’t recruit well there is very little chance they make any impact nationally. There will be some one offs, but nothing that will be sustained.ramster wrote: ↑5 years agoIt’s tough to get Top 150 to mid majors. It can be done but not frequently

Are you saying if the A10 doesn’t get top 150 kids they won’t be good? I Think the A10 has to develop kids and once you have older more experience team you can win in the NCAA tourney. Also, good transfers are key. That’s big part of college basketball too. Transfer market can make you or break you.

Agreed rankings are very political too. Usually the top 25-50 kids are pretty accurate, but after that it gets tricky.

There are a number of ranking systems out there

I know they change at certain times of the year as they rerank. AAU, Summer League, Tournaments, Camps, HS Games all play a part. Some players get better and grow, others level out, some were incorrectly rated to begin with..........

Lot Different Factors such as you said HS, AAU teams you play with or what camps your at and how you show. Also, lot times kids with size n athleticism are seen early in get ranked in stick threw out HS. IMO after the top 25 or 50 it’s lot opinion based. It’s fun to always and go back to these list after kids get to college and play.ramster wrote: ↑5 years agoHow do they get political Slim? Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I think you hit on it -- The key at the end of the day is landing players who can be impactful. While I will always contend that the higher you recruit, the more likely of hitting a home run on a recruit (the average player ranked between 45-55 will have a better career than the average player ranked between 245-255), that doesn't mean you can't hit home runs in the 200s or even 300s. And sometimes, that means finding disgruntled higher rated players on the transfer market. The key is, you have to have 7-8 quality players, and 2-3 players who we will call "development" guys, either 4 year players who can become quality players, or transfers sitting out who can be a quality player. Every team will probably have a few guys on the end of the bench who never develop and that is fine, as long as you don't have 3-5 players who you don't think can ever see the court you should be ok. The great thing about college basketball is that you can win with experience, the caveat is that you need to be multi-dimensional. You can be a 3-4 guard offense and that can work against many teams, but if you play someone like UNC with 5+ 6'10 240+ guys, you need to be able to keep them off the glass with some consistency. If you can do that, you could make a run.Slim wrote: ↑5 years agoRamStock wrote: ↑5 years agoWhich is the reason the conference was so bad last year. Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I dont think many will argue that the likelihood of the 50th ranked guy having a better career than the 250th ranked guy is greater...but those are extreme differences. What most coaches have said, and I agree with, is that after the Top 25-30 kids there is a huge margin of error from 30 thru 150-175. You can't build a program hoping a bunch of kids ranked 250 end up beating the odds, what the A10 needs to do is land a large percentage of kids in that 75-200 range and keep them together all 4 years. That is the sweet spot for the A10. The Hassan Martins, EC matthews of the world.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Agreed, but what hurts the A10 in lot Mid Major conferences is Transfer if good player that’s young plays well high major are coming after them. Then if you redshirt guy then you got worry about them leaving as Grad Transfer. Recruiting is changing lot compared to even 3-5 years ago. It’s tough for College Coaches. Also, the recruiting pd for AAU are shorter now which hurts too for lot different reasons. Lot more kids will slip threw the cracks but will get to college and blow up.bigappleram wrote: ↑5 years ago I dont think many will argue that the likelihood of the 50th ranked guy having a better career than the 250th ranked guy is greater...but those are extreme differences. Does anyone know about Devale Johnson, 6’8” JUCO transfer?
From Brooklyn
Both Bill Koch and Ryan McCloskey (URI Video Coach) just started to follow Devale.
He had an unofficial visit to St Johns 4 days ago.
Reading his twitter - he hopes to make a decision in the next few weeks

Solid shooting percentages especially for a 6’7”player, good rebounder
65-152 for 42.8% on 3 pointers, 2nd most attempts on the team, percentage led the team
31-41 for 75.6% on FTs led the team
8.6 rebounds per game led the team
53 blocked shots easily lead the team
Conference player of week honors

Take it for what it's worth....Wood is a work in progress....imo he will need plenty of time to develop...as an added bonus he gets to the line a lot but doesn't make them...…slim might be trolling but he has a point.
We definitely need either Miles or Leggett. Both are better than Wood, at least at this point.

Coaches can directly contact rising juniors starting tomorrow, so there should be lots of talk of offers and “first to contact” and all that starting soon.

Not sure of the importance. Rising Juniors are ‘21s. Rhody has offered many 21s. Some of them were offered over a year ago - Reyes and Clarke come to mind. What changes tomorrow? Is it that they can call them?

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Direct contact (DMs, calls, emails, texts) is what’s different. To this point, offers and such have had to go through the players’ coaches or they’ve mailed out general info to players. Some coaches make a show of it- reaching out to guys at midnight to let them know they are a priority. Like a lot of things in recruiting, it’s about standing out, getting noticed, etc. If a coach calls a guy on day one, they’re showing the player he’s a priority.
As someone who just generally enjoys recruiting, it’s interesting to see who schools start to prioritize early.

I do recall coaches having official visits with a top recruit at midnight.
