Baseball's recent strong run ends with back to back New England OOC losses. URI lost at Boston College 4-0 Tuesday and to Holy Cross on Wednesday 7-3. Now have over all record of 14-16 and A-10 slate of 7-2. While URI has been doing well in the A-10, it continues to struggle again this year outside the league, even with New England teams.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond graduate student Tyler Plantier was named Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Saint Louis senior Cody Luther was selected as the A-10 Pitcher of the Week. Rhode Island freshman Justin Cherry was tabbed the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played April 8-14.7
Cherry recorded 13 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and one walk over 9.2 innings of work. A right-hander from Stafford, Va., he had a 0.00 ERA while opponents hit just .125 off of him. He led Rhode Island to a 4-0 victory at Davidson on Sunday, striking out 11 in a 7.2-inning start and throwing five consecutive 1-2-3 innings. The Wildcats, A-10 home run leaders, managed to hit just two balls out of the infield through the first six innings. Cherry also struck out two in two innings of no-hit relief at Boston College on Tuesday. He also recorded an RBI single while playing shortstop in Wednesday's game against Holy Cross.
Cherry has played in the field in addition to pitching, including the last 3 games at 3rd base. Not sure who will be on the mound for today’s game vs Sacred Heart
Right, and will not be made up. At UConn Wednesday but then an important A10 Conference series with George Mason this weekend (Fri,Sat,Sun) as URI battles for a good the A10 Tournament - Top 7 teams get in. Will be a close finish as many candidates for those 7 spots.
3 games at Saint Louis
3 games home vs UMASS
3 games at LaSalle
So 12 big conference games remain. OOC games don’t matter much, it’s all about the A10 Tournament to win a NCAA bid.

Tyler Wilson returns to the starting rotation tomorrow, his first appearance since February 22nd
Tyler retired all 9 batters he faced. Feel so bad for him with the injury bug.
He would’ve been drafted after his Jr year if he wasn’t injured. That is a long time ago now.
With two series left, URI is 10-8 in conference in a tie with Fordham and St. Joe's for spots 5-7 with the top 7 making the conference tournament. This coming weekend is our final home series as we take on 9th place UMass (8-9). The last series we travel to last place LaSalle (3-15). If we win the series against UMass it puts us in a good spot to make the tournament, though we still have to worry about St. Louis passing us. We lost 2 of 3 out there this weekend to put them right back into the race, one game out of the 5-7 spots. They host second to last George Mason (5-13) this weekend then travel to fourth place Richmond (11-7) to finish the season.

After today they have three more A-10 games against cellar dweller LaSalle so they have a good shot at a 16-8 or worst case 15-9 conference record. That will get them into the A-10 tourney for sure. It’s big if, but if Wilson can return to form that guy can shutdown any team playing in the A-10 tourney.
Right, but unfortunately the game was just cancelled.
Will not be made up and will not effect either teams record.
Tough break for URI since we were up 5-0 batting with two on two outs bottom of 4th.
On to LaSalle next weekend to close out the season.
LaSalle has lost their last 6 games. 3 last weekend home vs Dayton then 3 this weekend at Fordham.
VCU @ GMU (3 games)
Dayton vs Fordham (3 games)
Davidson @ St Bonaventure (3 games)
Richmond vs Saint Louis (3 games)
URI @ La Salle (3 games)
Saint Joseph’s @ UMASS (3 games)
George Washington has completed A10 games
Rhody @ La Salle Thursday 3pm.
We will likely see Tyler Wilson, Nick Robinson and Justin Cherry starting pitchers on the mound for these important 3 games this week vs La Salle to close out the regular season Conference play.
The worst we can do is finish 8th, so the St. Joe's at UMass series is the most critical one to keep an eye on today, they start at 1. It's tough because of the rain outs and what not, but if my math is right we clinch a spot in the A10 tournament with a win or St. Joe's loss. Nick Robinson got the start yesterday, so expect Tyler Wilson get the ball for us at 1 today.

We'll be the 6th seed in the tournament starting Wednesday at 10 am vs 3rd seed Dayton, who we didn't play this year. The UMass game that was called in the bottom of the fourth when we were up 5-0 came back to screw us. If that ended up as a regulation game we would have jumped all the way up to the 4th seed and would have opened up play against Fordham, who we took two of three from

Freshman (RS)Justin Cherry gets the start today in Rhody’s opening game of the A10 Tournament on a beautiful day at Fordham
URI leads Dayton 1-0 going to the bottom of the 3rd, Dayton the home team.
We lose 5-2 to Dayton and will play tonight at 8:30. If Saint Louis loses the game coming up we play them. If Saint Louis pulls off the upset against Davidson we'll play the loser of the 5 pm game between Fordham and Richmond

URI - St Louis going to the bottom of the 8th 0-0.
Tyler Wilson has been great with 12 strikeouts in 8 innings, giving up only 4 hits
Wilson has thrown 78 strikes out of 101 total pitches so far.
Amazing!!!
Tyler Wilson pitches 10 innings. 14 strikeouts. In 10th leadoff batter singles sharply to left. Bad throw by catcher on a steal sends leadoff batter to 3rd with one out. Wilson strikes out next batter. With 2 outs batter hits one up the middle, Wilson gets a glove on it, rolls to 2nd but a bad throw and lack of scooping it at first scores the run. 1-0 Saint Louis going to the bottom of the 10th.
Conner Lehmann is mowing down URI batters with 19 strike outs in the game
He strikes out the first batter.
We get a 1 out single off the SS glove
Lehmann strikes out the next batter for the second out but we steal 2nd
Next batter gets 2 balls on him and St Louis chooses to intentionally walk him putting men on 1st and 2nd with two outs - putting the potentially winning runner on 1st base
We pinch hit Sonny Ulliana who is batting .200 on the season
Lehmann has given up only 1 hit in 9 innings, then the single in the 10th to make it two total hits.
Ulliana fouls off a pitch with a good looking swing
Then the right handed Ulliana hits one down the right field line that scores both URI base runners for the walk off win.
Just an amazing pitchers duel and an even more amazing 10th inning.
For what it's worth, Fordham is in the driver's seat to win the A-10 tournament. They have a joke of a men's basketball program, but they continue to be tough and competitive in several other (baseball, softball, women's basketball) sports.
Fordham as the #4 seed had a big 2-1 win against #1 Seed VCU who had a strong overall record and 1st place in A10 with only 5 losses.
#5 Seed Richmond then beat VCU 6-2 sending Top seed VCU home with two losses and no wins.
