Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Offer)
We've seen this a lot. Player being recruited by low majors, waits out the recruiting cycle, mid-majors with a scholarship come calling, he takes one, and in a year or two transfers to where he should have gone in the first place. Maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Offer)
Not defending anyone here but now Virginia Tech, St. John’s and Oklahoma State are mid-majors?
There is absolutely no video on this player, which is odd in this day and age.
He also does not meet the "get an impact player for 2019" criteria - and I'd prefer a big body - but he does seem to be intriguing.
From what I have read, he looks like a classic late bloomer. I wonder how his academics are.

A team will gamble that he has the late development that Obi did. The upside is so high some will feel it’s worth the risk.rhodyblue12 wrote: ↑5 years agoNot defending anyone here but now Virginia Tech, St. John’s and Oklahoma State are mid-majors?

He is already 19 years old. Obi of course was 21 years old in March at the end of his Fr year

He’s worth the gamble for a able body. He won’t start, but will fill CT’s void.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Offer)
I think they only reason he's getting the late bloomer tag is because his brother was.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Offer)
I agree and a lot of remaining ‘19s are getting a boost right now.
I can’t find accurate stats for his year at Woodstock.
I saw Woodstock play twice this year. I don’t recall him from either game.

I thought, by law, he was required to go to UMass. No idea what to expect from him, but worth a roster spot.

I’ve seen 6’6”, 6’7” and 6’8”. If he’s a small forward it doesn’t matter.

If he can knock down 3's, that's all I need to know. Let's see it translate on the big stage.

I think we have a winner here. If Jacob turns out to be anywhere near as good as his brother, awesome.

Not knocking this pickup at all. I think he’s a great addition.
However, how come if he played for a known school with so many notable names, he’s not ranked anywhere? Seems like he’s a steal for us but I haven’t even seen many videos. Just seems odd this day in age...

Obi Toppin wasn't heavily recruited at all....Jacob had more and better suitors than him.

Good point. He didn’t start for Woodstock Academy. Woodstock had a lot of D1 prospects.SandorClegane wrote: ↑5 years ago Not knocking this pickup at all. I think he’s a great addition.

Preview from National Prep Championship in March. Woodstock (#1) lost to Brewster (#8) in quarterfinal.
Only in their second year in the prep ranks, Woodstock earned the top overall seed after going 36-1 on the season.
They have seven players already committed to division I schools including Trey Anderson (South Carolina), Noah Fernandes (Wichita State), Ody Oguama (Wake Forest), Preston Santos (UMass), and Trey Williams (Indiana) as well as one of the nation’s best available big men in Tre Mitchell.
Other available 2019 prospects include Ronnie DeGray, Jacob Toppin, and T.J. Weeks. The Centaurs utilize that depth to play a high-octane up-and-down style on both ends of the floor.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Rhode Island Commit)
only game i saw where he scored a lot of points, but like everyone has already said, this is very very deep prep team. i wonder if he played in some post high school tournament and that's when he got some visibility. I also discount the VT and St. Johns offers a bit because they both lost a lot of players when their coaches left and were trying to replenish their rosters with '19 offers. but there has been a buzz for a few months about him and I trust the staff given the other 19's, jucos and transfers they could have worked with. Welcome aboard Jacob!!

“Passed”? If you have a plan that would have gotten him admitted into the school, we’d like to hear it. In any case, I hope fans are patient with Jacob. Saying as fact that he’s a late bloomer because of his brother’s development is unfair to him, IMO. Let him be Jacob. The official release has him at 6’7”, and we know all school aren’t exactly always truthful with that.

Beyond the NEPSAC, Woodstock Academy had a magical season and maybe the most impressive part was the personal growth of so many of their individual players like T.J. Weeks and Jacob Toppin, all under the guidance of Tony Bergeron.

Somehow got into Dayton - can’t imagine that is much easier than URI. Our APR was fixed, we could have taken the shot. We went with the more likely to play year 1 guy, despite having a pretty stacked roster it was u likely he would crack. It was short term planning.ace wrote: ↑5 years ago“Passed”? Maybe you’ll believe bar if you don’t want to listen to me. It has nothing to do with APR- that’s only relevant once a guy gets in.rhodylaw wrote: ↑5 years agoSomehow got into Dayton - can’t imagine that is much easier than URI. To pieces of info to add to discussion above.
Obi is already 21 years old so let’s not think Jacob is young - he is 19 and completed a Post Grad year.
Obi was an academic redshirt his first year at Dayton. He was an academic issue.

We all want Obi Toppin on our team. He's not. Get over it..,
I love this get! An athletic wing that can shoot with high upside. Our roster next year has a LOT of potential. I really hope we can put it all together and have a special season. Jeff and Cyril deserve it.

Good job to whomever put this video together.
Shoots coming off screens, off the dribble, spots up, attacks close outs. Nice.
Also has a mid-range and goes to the hoop right and left handed.
And now he is stronger after a PG year.
Looks like a really nice addition.

Reading the side conversation about Obi reminded me of this article

Funny how the anonymous head coach felt one of our positives was easy admissions. I also think everything the anonymous assistant said was pretty funny too

How can St Joe's be better than us? With a high school gym in the middle of the city? Especially since they dont have much upside right now.

Re: ‘19 NY G/F Jacob Toppin (Rhode Island Commit)
Looking at the above video (the quality one, not the VHS video previously shared), a good part of his game that hopefully translates regardless of competition is his offensive comfort and decision making. Doesn't seem to be nervous about shooting from distance on the catch or dribble, mid-range or taking the ball to the hoop. Seems Jacob can work and shoot in any of these spots. Definitely has footwork if he's near the basket and a taller player winds up defending him, saw a nice spin move in there.
