Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I'm struggling with folks, including Koch pushing back on this. The A-10 will be improved but there are still a lot of unkowns of how good they will be and you absolutely need a tough OOC if you want to be a tourney team in a mid major conference. I absolutely love this schedule and I would want the FGC game replaced with another good team at home, not a vanilla team. We have a few cupcakes already scheduled and there is no guarantee everyone in the Jamaican tournament will be tough, coupled with half the A-10 still Q 3 or 4 teams. 40% of our games could still be lower Q2, or Q3 and Q4 teams. Nobody from a power conference plays that many lower level games, the reality of being in a mid-major conference. Stronger OOC schedules also absolutely help recruiting, especially the Maryland game with the connections Cox has in the DMV- if we can steal that game or even be competitive I think that's a huge plus for helping reaching into the DMV '21 and 22 recruits - it won't hurt.
Kudos to Cox, staff and admin. This is an awesome development and team I love supporting.

Bill’s last tweet seemed positive about the scheduling. “This is what mid-majors who feel they can reach an NCAA have to do.”
“We will be good when we are good.”

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
Love this move! We need these types of games more often. It is time we start behaving like a perennial A10 team, since we think of ourselves that way. If we want to be in tourney talk year in and year out, it is games like this we need.
With the new metrics they use for determining NCAA entry, does losing by a couple points away at a Q1 team like Maryland help us since it is a "good loss"?

Wow this schedule looks tough
We need to be competitive OOC then take care of business in conference and we got a shot to dance

It’s not a Nevada to push back a year - the straight cancel is what sucked about the Nevada game. Although they will likely suck this year, so maybe it’s not such a bad thing to have had them cancel outright on us.

Ace was just trying to be tongue in cheek here. She knows it's not exactly what Nevada pulled. And to be clear the return game with Nevada would have been this past year (not next year when I agree they will suck).

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I’m a little late... still trying to comprehend the Pee Cee game being on a Friday. A hundred percent has to do with TV scheduling. I recall the 2013 game was on a THURSDAY night. Hope that never happens again.
I am assuming it’s a 7pm start and they’d open the doors at 5:30 since they’ve done an hour and a half for the last few games we had at the RC against them.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I am hoping there are a lot less PC fans in the stands this year than 2 years ago.
Hoping for an increase in season ticket holders again this year and that Rhody fans do the early deposit for the 5 game plan (to block PC fans). I am sure the game will be part of the 5 game plan.
The home schedule should be great this year with 16 home games including PC, Alabama & W Kentucky for OOC.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
Sure this OCC schedule carries risk. With the A10 trending towards 1 or 2 bids then winning the Conference becomes more important. Bynam leaving, Nick Honor, Eric Williams, guys leaving for higher level teams
So like in baseball, play tough OOC, get better prepared for A10 conference play and have an OOC more appealing to recruits.
I like the road games because we are not getting a Maryland to the RC, that’s just dreaming.
Jermaine Harris, Jeff Dowtin, Antwan Walker, David Cox, all get to return home to play in front of family and friends.
Recruits can come watch a great game
Dowtin gets to play vs Anthony Cowan, his backcourt mate at St Johns College HS
Love that we picked up this game.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
Hell yes.
LOVE IT.
They may have both Fernando and Jalen Smith. Two huge 6-10 guys.
That would be tough.
Great to have Cowan and Jeff (backcourt mates in high school) team up.
Let's take it to their asses!
Maryland
LSU (maybe)
Utah State (maybe)
TBD (strong Jamaica tournament team)
PC
West Virginia
Alabama
Western Kentucky
As tough a schedule as ever. So many opportunities.
We need to be READY

Multi-Team Exempt. A mid season tournament (like at Mohegan, in Hawaii, or Jamaica) where you're limited to 4 games total for the event.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I have to ask (which I did of Rothstein), what does he mean by "MTE: Two high-major games?" Does that mean we are definitely playing LSU in Jamaica no matter what? And who is the other high major game? If we assume an upper level P5 team, does that mean there's another one in the Jamaica tourney or are we invited to another tourney or event against a P5?

Most likely he meant Utah State which will be a borderline top 25 team headed into the year.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
It means to two Tournament games at the Ryan Center will be against weaker teams and the top 4 rated teams will be in a bracket together in Jamaica. So URI will play 2 out of the other 3 top teams. So far3 of the 4 top teams have been announced - LSU, Utah State & Rhody. The fourth team should be announced soon.

I am hearing that one of URI’s home games next year will be against Siena. I’m not sure if it is part of the tourney or one of their remaining games. Also hearing discussion with Bryant for another home game this year or if not next year.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I checked out the Siena Fan Forum and it appears they may be in the Jamaica Classic. They are not yet officially linked to any tournament but their beat writer and some fans are indicating they are considering the Jamaica Classic as one the four teams in the pod that plays two games in the states at an opponent and then two games versus the other teams in that pod in Montego Bay.

Would seem it might be likely the Saints come to URI for one of the games Rhody hosts as part of the event. Given the other known hosts are Utah State and LSU, it would make sense to partner Siena with URI to reduce travel and expenses.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I was at Panera Bread in East Greenwich a few days ago and happened to overhear an interesting conversation between Thorr and someone who is I later determined a coach at CCRI. I was unsure at first about mentioning these things on the board. After thinking on it I realized it was all said in a public setting the contents were really nothing controversial/private. Just some stuff that big URI basketball fans would find interesting.
Virginia Tech asked us for a home and home but with us at Mohegan. Thorr turned them down so they asked for a 2 for 1 and we turned them down once again. Thorr told his friend we make "OK" money at Mohegan but not like at the Ryan center... Opponent makes a bit of cash also. He said no more "pseudo-home and home" at Mohegan and no 2 for 1 in the future unless it's a real blue blood like Duke.
The rest of what I heard is less relevant to the future schedule. I figure I'll post it here anyway.
Thorr and the CCRi coach both mentioned that JUCO's are possibly changing from 2 to 3 years of JUCO Athlete eligibility in the future. Both men seemed to think this as odd as I did. CCRi guy said this would be done by having them take classes in other associates degree program in the third year, assuming they finish the first associates in year 2.
The last thing was a tidbit on dealing with Georgetown, and Big East would have liked to hear the rest of this convo but I didn't want to go around following them around to eavesdrop.
Basically, the Georgetown AD did not return Thorr's Calls/emails wanting to talk to Ewing about Walker. Thorr said he's always amazed how many "power conference" types sometimes act in this way. He said Big East were the absolute worse, it seemed to me he was expressing that BE has a very Self-important holier-than-thou attitude. I suspect many here understand this as URi fans and/or /alumni we have all seen/felt this attitude ourselves. Indeed my first thought upon watching/hearing him about this was his views on the Big East seem much in-line with many on this boards views of BE and PC.

If Virginia Tech was on the level that they were this year I wouldn’t have a problem with the two for one with the game at the Ryan Center, but losing their coach and every player they had makes it a different story.EGram wrote: ↑5 years ago I was at Panera Bread in East Greenwich a few days ago and happened to overhear an interesting conversation between Thorr and someone who is I later determined a coach at CCRI. They will struggle next year in all likelihood.
Unless Blackshear comes back.
Still wouldve been nice to catch them on the road in a down year and caught them in a good year at home next year.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I keep looking for other participants of the tourney but nothing official just yet. We heard about URI being in it months ago but it wasn't publicly announced until much more recently. The Siena rumors are over a month old.
The following higher profile conference teams have not yet been officially linked to any tournaments:
Big 12 (0/12) Fuly committed
A 10 (3/14): La Salle Explorers, St. Bonaventure Bonnies, Saint Louis Billikens
ACC (1/15): Boston College Eagles
American (2/12): SMU Mustangs, Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Big East (1/10): DePaul Blue Demons
Big Ten (5/14): Illinois Fighting Illini, Indiana Hoosiers, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Hopefully the fourth host school is from this group. Would be nice if it were a Big Ten school as there could be several options (5) but I suspect it will end up being a team such as SMU, Tulsa, Depaul, or BC.
Also hope that most of the four non host field has been set. Would hate for a non D1 school as has happened in some of the tourneys URI has been in over the last 20 years. Not a great sign the field for this is not yet totally firmed up. Situation could however be worse. St Bonaventure has been slotted for the Belfast Classic but Brexit has thrown the whole event into doubt. It still has not announced all the teams and it's location may get moved to Florida.
