Does DH now have a coaching tree longer than JB?

Nothing on Buffalo's website yet, and I can't get the press conference link to work.

Great. Then we all agree. Bobby did nothing and had no impact on the program so no loss here at all. Let me grab my rose colored glasses.rodfromcranston wrote:Even WEEI reported it on their SportsFlash.

Wow!
I'm not sure how much recruiting Bobby did, anyway.
Whenever there was a player to be seen, it was Dan and/or
Preston at the scene.

I don't think anyone is saying Bobby did nothing. I think most of us putting a positive spin on this are saying this is not the unmitigated disaster and we shouldn't be closing the Ryan Center doors just yet.RoadyJay wrote:Great. Then we all agree. Came across this from a pretty good recruiting guy....
Dave Telep @DaveTelep 1h
Bobby Hurley took to recruiting as fast as any former NBA player I've seen. Buffalo just hit jackpot IMO.
Clearly it hurts. It's just a question of how much. My feeling is that it will depend on this year. Bobby Hurley's name gets you into a lot of households even coming off two horrible years. A good year on the court will replace a lot of that.

I agree with you.. So again, what is the impact? I'm not jumping off a bridge but I'm not going to put a positive spin on it because it's just that... SPIN. So anyone want to take an objective crack at the impact?

Bobby, from what I've been told, has been looking for his own coaching gig for a while. He didn't want to stay at Wagner though. Buffalo is a better program, although I'm like others here, thinking that he'd wait for something a little better. At least Buffalo will be doubling his salary, more or less.
Well, got to start somewhere, and at least it's a place that's his own choice.
Still would like to hear Dan's take on it, and I'm sure we will soon. Will this affect our April recruiting?
Oops, we just did.

I think if Dan is going to lead us to where we hope he will, then he will find a quality replacement for his brother. I'm sure he has plenty of contacts in this world to choose from. This is certainly a great move by Buffalo.

Who gets the assistant's, or associate coach job? I would assume Carr.
I would also guess Dan will be looking for someone to fill the bottom position on the coaching staff.

I'm not sure he really even needs to name an associate head coach now. I think that was more a title reserved for Bobby, but I don't know for sure.rambone 78 wrote:Who gets the assistant's, or associate coach job? I would assume Carr.

Bobby is very good at the presser.
Very gracious about crediting Dan for educating him on being a coach.
Said he didn't take Wagner, because he wanted to help Dan at URI.
Said this has all taken place in the last 24 hours.
He's a better public speaker than Dan, for what it's worth.

Well, there were rumors about Carr leaving for a HC job. Let's hope he stays. Would be a huge loss coming right after Bobby leaving.
Maybe URI will increase his and Preston's salary a bit now. That would help.

Preston's profile has never been higher at URI, than it is now.
The inroads he's made in Michigan are significant, and bode well for
the future.
Jim Carr is a special person, and I hope he stays.

Well, it's certainly understandable that he left, considering he will make at least twice what he was making here. Bobby's salary wasn't going to approach what Dan is, or will be making in the next few years here.
But it all came together in 24 hours? He must have been blown away by Buffalo's offer.
Too bad for us. It will hurt a little, in recruiting and PG training especially. But Dan's the coach and a past PG himself, so things should be OK.

Like I said, I hope URI realizes this, and increases Jim's and Preston's pay accordingly.
If they both move up the ladder, they should be paid more anyway.

I hope that Preston gets his break next. Our 98 guys (Preston,ARD and Tyson) have been grinding it out for years. I hope they all become HC's at some point. DH will do what great HC's do. Hire great assistants. That is my hope. If our assistants keep leaving with Dan at the helm that is not that bad of an issue to have. Means the recruits are coming in and we have a winning program.

Buddy Holly?
I'd like Preston to stay for awhile. I'm
hearing some great things about what he's
establishing in Michigan.
Bobby to Buffalo was a Duke connection at AD.

Having your assistants leave to become HC's elsewhere is OK I guess, but look at what X has done over the years.
When Dan leaves, the best thing will most likely be promoting one of his assistants. That continuity really helps a program. It has to be the right guy though.
No Jerry D's again, please.

Let's worry about winning and the rest takes care of itself.
Maybe Bobby will be seasoned enough to take this job by then?
I'm not willing to continually worry about Hurley leaving, like some here are,
let alone worry about promoting some assistant, just because he's and assistant.

Can you imagine if Thorr left yesterday and Bobby today this message board could fill a floor at butler hospital all by itself. I think we'll be fine. If he didn't want to be here then we are better off without him and I'm glad he went to a school below us then he can't out recruit our players. Just think how pissed his family is they have to move to Buffalo. And then think how pissed Baron is Hurleys follow him everywhere and make him look bad.

Bobby will outshine Baron in Buffalo, all day long.
He's everything Baron isn't. In his presser, he said,
"I never make excuses".
Edgewood near the Bay, traded for Buffalo on Erie.
Teenage kids, too. The life of a coach.
Oh, and Buddy Holly is Coach Tirone.

Tirone could easily slip into an assistant coach role. I don't see anyone being named "associate", as that was to allow Bobby to get a special higher level of pay not normally afforded assistants.

This is a catch 22. If the assistants aren't wanted by another program....neither do we. Bench strength is a must for this to happen.rambone 78 wrote:Having your assistants leave to become HC's elsewhere is OK I guess, but look at what X has done over the years.

Re: Bobby Hurley named Head Coach at Buffalo
This is easy to understand: Bobby has been up front about wanting to be a head coach. I don't think, though, that he wanted to follow in his younger brother's footsteps at Wagner or URI. If he succeeds at Buffalo, it's all his.
As for recruiting at URI, the roster is pretty much set for the next two years and Dan and Preston can handle recruiting just fine.
Bobby was great in individual workouts and they'll need to fill that hole.

The other question: will anyone follow Bobby to Buffalo. Carr? Tirone?

Hurley has put together the best all around staff since I've been
following the program.
I'm sure he'll do the right thing in reshuffling his staff.
These are Dan's guys, not Bobby's.
Not the end of the world.
Nice snotty ,smug comments on the PC board.
One guy had to edit his post because he thought DAN left
for Buffalo. Nice reading comprehension.
Iggy is right. Bobby's main strength was in practices. He also got us
in that Paradise Jam in a couple of years.

I'm sure Buffalo isn't Bobby's destination job, if you know what I mean.
It would be nice if he would some day consider coming back here, but I doubt it.
And yes, I've hated Duke since 1978, you older ones know what I mean. Biggest loss in Rhody history before you-know-who in 1998.
Imagine the Hurleys coaching against each other some day?

I have never been to the pc board before just now. One person said it we were in "full meltdown mode over here." Wow, a few posters worrying about Bobby going to Buffalo and the sky is falling by all? In another thread they have St. Louis, Richmond, and by some, Dayton already packed and in the new Big East. I've got to say all these Big East fans I know over the years have always said the A10 sucked. If that's so true, why do they continue to and want to steal our teams? Maybe the A10 isn't as awful as the Big East shills would have us believe?rodfromcranston wrote:Hurley has put together the best all around staff since I've been

I'm glad I don't read that board. Complete waste of my time. (I don't mean to offend PC fans with that last statement. If I were a PC fan, I'd read it all the time, but since I'm not, then it adds nothing to my life).

Rod, yeah, 1988 was big, but not as big as the 78 loss. You and I both know that URI would have most likely made the FF that year, maybe even the final against Givens and Kentucky.
I would give my left nut to have one more shot at them in the NCAA tournament. Ouch!

Re: Bobby Hurley named Head Coach at Buffalo
Congrats to Bobby on this new coaching gig. I expected his stay at URI would be short, just maybe not this short.
Given that Bobby turned down the Wagner job last year, I am surprised that he took the Buffalo job since the MAC is not the greatest basketball conference, especially considering the many big publics in their membership. This year the MAC's RPI came out just two notches above the NEC. I would have thought the Siena opening and the MAAC would be more attractive.

Siena would be for sure, but maybe Bobby's not ready for that level, which might be A10 or even BE soon.
Anyway, I doubt he'd take the Siena job if they were to join the A10, for obvious reasons.

Re: Bobby Hurley named Head Coach at Buffalo
'96 Pat Skerry had two other gigs after JB before going to Towson as a head coach.
I hope that there is nothing more to BH leaving, since BH probably has more insight into DH's career plans than anyone. As an NJ guy, BH is use to brown snow, but the volume may surprise him.
BH leaving is an opportunity for DH to broaden URI's recruiting area and/or fill other gaps such as a big-man coach. I wouldn't assume that other assistants will move up. DH is totally responsible for the program and it is his pick to get the most needed resource.
