Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
LOL this is a joke right? My point wasn’t to say the MWC or A10 wouldn’t promote good matchups or quality games, but rather to say the goal of these challenges/scheduling agreements should be to give your bubble teams quality opportunities where they may be missing some, and that isn’t done if top 25 URI plays a top 25 Nevada and St. Joes faces San Jose St. Selfishly for the top 2-3 teams in every conference it’s great, but if the goal is to get back to 4-6 bids consistently in the conference it’s better than nothing but is certainly far from a solution to a major problem.ramster wrote: ↑5 years agoFor me I think this Atlantic 10 and Mountain West partnership is great. I see all positives, no negatives. Congrats on our A10 Conference Leader for helping with this. No way I would turn my nose up to this.rjsuperfly66 wrote: ↑5 years agoI would agree with that I just think the problem with the A10, MWC, etc. is that it might only be helpful to the top 2-3 teams and not 4-5 and the 2-3 it helps would likely already be headed to the tournament anyway. If you look at the Top 3 A10 RPI's last season, 19, 24, 47. Very helpful to the MWC counterparts. 4-6 had RPI's of 135, 146, and 147, not helpful at all. Same exercise for the MWC, had top 3 RPI's of 17, 50, and 62. Pretty helpful. 4-6 had RPI's of 98, 103, and 118. Not resume boosting. What scheduling agreements like this need to do is help 4-6, not 1-3. 4-6 need to have more resume building opportunities to be able to play their way to the bubble. I don't think this agreement ultimately accomplishes that. Like I said before though, if you said the top 6 in each conference would play 3 games against each other, you'll get one or two shots at marquee, resume-building opponents. Team 5 who might have matched up against a team with an RPI of 146 might get team 24, 47, and 146. That's extremely helpful. I think that is what is being missed. But can't fault them for trying.bigappleram wrote: ↑5 years ago
The reality is that even though this would only help the top 4-5 teams, it is still worth doing because those are the teams a league like ours needs to overcompensate for. If the league can enter conference play with 4-5 teams within the Top 50-75 it will be a boon. Adding 1 more quality OOC opponent to each of the Top 4-5 teams schedule will only help that. Then there will be some in the 75-150 range who largely aren't impacted positively or negatively by a like for like matchup with a similar ranked team in MVC, etc, and who cares about the bottom tier. There is no way the A10 will ever be a league that has parity top to bottom, it is always going to be top heavy and that's ok. The commissioner has to do everything in her power to keep the top tier strong and lean heavily upon them to prop up the rest of the league.
Nevada is ranked Preseason #7, in some Preseason Polls I have seen Nevada as high as #4.
Villanova is the Big East’s highest ranked team at #9 and in fact they are the only ranked Big East Team - when was the last time that ever happened. Could the lofty Big East be coming down to earth with the other Non Football Conference Schools? The horrors!
This provides good scheduling opportunities for Schools in both conferences and some interesting cross country travel opportunities that helps with recruiting pitches. Wish we had something like this years ago - but love that it is here now regardless of who we match up with.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/280 ... s-released
But please don’t compare either conference to the Big East. You just look like a boob so I’ll chose to believe you were just being provocative for some reason.

Not really new information in this article, but Koch confirms the games I have listed in the first post. One thing I found interesting is he said no firm plans have been announced for next Thanksgiving. I might be reading too much into the phrasing, but that leads me to believe we are scheduled to be in a tournament again next Thanksgiving and we're just waiting for the tournament to make the announcement

Yep, that's how I read it as well. This is the first year that I can remember where Rhody hasn't been in a tourney over Thanksgiving, so they'll probably get back to it.RhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑5 years ago http://www.providencejournal.com/sports ... ns-problem

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
The Koch blurb on scheduling:
No firm plans have been announced for the holiday next season, but URI’s nonconference schedule is already filling up. The Rams have home games with Providence, Alabama and Western Kentucky and road games with Florida Gulf Coast, West Virginia, Brown and Middle Tennessee. URI is completing home-and-home engagements with the Crimson Tide, Eagles, Mountaineers and Blue Raiders.
Some posters thought URI would owe Harvard a home game. No mention of Harvard Crimson by Koch seems to confirm the game this year was a one off buy game with no return. Would seem that was also the case with Bryant and Stony Brook as most had assumed.
With even more true road games next season (four), I hope Rhody is in one of those tournaments where they get two home games and only have to play two neutral site games. Six OOC games away from the Ryan Center should be the maximum. This is the highest allowable number that would likely result in not playing the majority of the OOC schedule away from Kingston.

I wonder why there seems to be such hesitancy to call buy games for what they are versus making people wonder if there is a return or not?
Do you have a list of A10 Teams that went to the NCAA Tournament for the past 10 years or more? How many each year? I seem to remember you posting this in the past year but I was not able to find it. I think it has been a long time since we only had 2 and that was when the A10 was much smaller in number of teams I think.
Likely no Thanksgiving Tournament this season because we have the Honolulu Christmas Tournament instead

Of the 29 seasons:
1. 15 seasons resulted in 3 bids
2. 8 seasons resulted in more than 3 bids
3. 6 seasons resulted in fewer than 3 bids
That would be a total of 23 of the last 29 seasons the A10 has received 3 or more bids.
There has not been a single season since Xavier/Temple left the conference that the A10 has received less than 3 bids.
I will readily concede that the possibility of fewer than 3 bids is very real this year but there is too much season remaining to cast that judgment yet.

And 11 straight seasons with 3 bids or more. 8 with 3, 1 with 4, 1 with 5 and 1 with 6.
And many of those seasons started out with people saying it was looking like a 1 or 2 bid year. My money is on 3 bids this year.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
Ramster, not in recent memory has an A10 season started off without any clear favorite or nationally recognized team (getting votes or in Top 40ish rankings) like it has this year. This year is potentially an outlier, but just saying we always get at least 3 and i think we will this year is ignoring the data. It would take a few teams sweeping through their OOCs and picking up multiple resume building wins for that to happen. I don't see it. I'd be willing to bet a lot the A10 gets at most 2 teams. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised but from on court performance thus far I don't see it happening.
For context, last 2 years we beat Seton Hall and Cincy (both neutral court). Both of those teams were Top 30 teams all year and had great metrics. No one has a win anywhere close to that this year. I guess Dayton beating Butler is our best win thus far, and i am not sold that Butler is an NCAA team this year.

The above was posted in the Week #6 - Games of Interest thread as UMass was playing at Temple last night. It raises a good point.steviep123 wrote: ↑5 years ago Just curious if UMass @ Temple is a home and home? I'd love for URI to get a home and home with Temple going and some other former A10 foes. Glad West VA is one of them (albeit neutral/road).
This game was the return of a series that started at UMass back in the 2016-17 season.
https://umassathletics.com/news/2016/7/ ... edule.aspx
Temple is actually playing FIVE games versus A-10 schools this year. It normally always plays games versus fellow Philly Big-5 members St Joe's and LaSalle. It however also has the series with UMass and tournament/showcase neutral site games with VCU (Brooklyn) and Davidson (Atlantic City). Can't therefore see why a series at some point with URI is not within reason given the shared history.
As for former A-10 conference partners, they would include schools such as:
West Virginia
Temple
Penn State
Rutgers
Va Tech
Villanova
Pitt
Charlotte
Xavier
Butler
We already have a series with WVU. I doubt the private schools would have any interest in playing URI. They are not similar type institutions and already come to RI every season to play PC. Most of the state schools (save Temple and Charlotte) are in P5 leagues but many are not typically near the top of those conferences. It may therefore not be inconceivable to play them, especially if WVU has done so. Temple as mentioned above should be sought out. I however don't see much benefit to playing CUSA member Charlotte at this time (which we might do in two weeks anyway in HI) . They are the furthest distance and their men's basketball program has really struggled since leaving the A-10 for football reasons. If it improved, I would be more open to possibly playing them.

Looks like a lot of tournaments have their brackets all set already. The only two on there that fit the bill of what we know from Thorr's comments (2 home games, 2 neutral games) would be Legends Classic or NIT Season Tipoff. Legends Classic already has an A10 team in Richmond, so maybe it is the NIT? Looks like other teams in that one are Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, and Syracuse.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
We were just in the NIT last year and did not get a fourth game because that tournament has really been having issues filling its field with all D1 teams in recent years. URI turned down a home game with non-D1 Oakland City University last season and only played three games while some other teams had four. Would not think we would be back so soon in the same tourney.PillPushr wrote: ↑5 years ago Found this link: https://www.bloggingthebracket.com/2018 ... anksgiving

Jamaican Classic is mid November. Two games in Jamaica and two games in the States.
Last year it was Nov 16-18. Eight teams - GTown, USF, Ohio, Loyola Marymount, Austin Peay, Campbell, Central CT, Florida A&M.
GTown’s games were at home vs Central CT and Campbell. In Jamaica they played Loyola Marymount and USF.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
Wow. That is a very poor quality of teams in that tournament. I would assume we are doing better than that. Most important is to get the team to improve. The schedule looks great for next year, but who knows if we will be able to keep up with it and make it of use for a tourney bid.Rhody83 wrote: ↑5 years agoJamaican Classic is mid November. Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
I don’t think the tournament we play next year necessarily has to present a murderer’s row for us. The schedule is shaping up to be pretty strong. It is a near guarantee that we will not be the program from the highest conference in the tournament, so we will get a game against a P5 or NBE team out of it. The schedule is already looking to be very solid, even if it lacks a game against a true blue blood brand name. I’m sure compared to 14 hours of flights to Hawaii over Christmas or playing in the northeast in the winter time, there is a quality of life benefit to the players playing in a tournament like this.
If it ends up being Jamaica, that’s cool with me.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
Thor's podcast interview near new year's day indicated that the tournament would likely be announced in about a month. That would mean anytime around now.

Florida Gulf Coast struggled this past season and is now seeing a lot of player movement:

I wonder if this run we've been on the past 3 weeks gets us a better A10 schedule than we were expecting for next season.

For those who haven't seen this: https://www.jamaicaclassic.com/champion ... a-classic/
Looks like it is official for us in the 2019 Jamaica Classic Nov 22-24. Other teams announced so far are LSU and Utah State, starting out to be a strong field.

This tournament is a four game event. URI is likely to get two home games and then play two games in Jamaica against the higher name profile participants.PillPushr wrote: ↑5 years ago For those who haven't seen this: https://www.jamaicaclassic.com/champion ... a-classic/

FYI - LSU and Utah State are both presently headed to the NCAA with both in the national Top 25 rankings.
LSU 26-6 / NET #14 / AP Ranked #12 / NCAA #3 Seed
Utah State 28-6 / NET #29 / AP Ranked #25 / NCAA #8 Seed

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
With the exempt tournament, URI can play a maximum of 13 OOC games (total of 31 with A-10 games). It would appear that would mean that URI only needs to lock down two games that it controls. I would think these would probably be home games unless a good neutral site opportunity arose. They should not schedule any more true road games with 4 already on the slate. They should get back to a schedule that has more home games than away/neutral as had been the case in most years previous to this past season.

Re: 2019-20 Schedule (top post is current)
Does anyone know when the dates get posted? Depending on when it is, I might be able to attend the game at FLGC - my in laws live in Miami and we go there for either Christmas or Thanksgiving (alternating years), so if I'm there during the time, I can go to the game. FLGC is about 2 hours and 15 mins away.

I might be able to make the FGCU game as well if the dates work. My brother is on the east coast, but just a road soda away.
