Yeah but who's going to pay the Price to sign him? Haha
No matter what, he's way overpriced.

Honestly, I can see a market. He had a 3.58 ERA this year, so if he pitches well in the series that erases the big mark against him. He might decide that he can get enough to make it worth leaving Boston

Pitching is pretty much always needed nowadays. I could see a smaller market / lower intensity team talking themselves into it. You probably don't even care if he's not as great in the postseason if simply making it would be a great accomplishment for your team.rambone 78 wrote: ↑5 years ago Yeah but who's going to pay the Price to sign him? He stays and gets $30m, he leaves, he's probably going to have to leave at least half that on the table. Not happening (unfortunately). Can't think of any team that would pay him $20M, and that would be a $10M paycut...he's just not going anywhere. Our best hope is that he performs here.
It was interesting last night, when Buck was talking about how Chris Sale has the kind of temperament that would work in any kind of city, "even a city like Boston"...and at the tail end of his comments...the camera moved to David Price in the dugout... as if to highlight the antithesis. Buck didn't even have to say anything, everyone got it....

The only counter-argument I would have to that is that if there was anyone crazy enough to walk away for "happiness," it would probably be David Price. He's already made $144 million in his career. He'll make another $127 million in the next 4 years to stay in Boston, but what if he got $80 million to go somewhere where he could be "himself?" I think he could get pretty close to that number. Low end he signs 4 and 70.NYGFan_Section208 wrote: ↑5 years ago He stays and gets $30m, he leaves, he's probably going to have to leave at least half that on the table. Not happening (unfortunately). Brandon Morrow made $21 million for 2 years, Mike Minor made $28 million for 3 years, Wade Davis $52 million over 3 years, all this past offseason amongst others. I don’t think he could do better financially by opting out, but he certainly hasn’t hurt himself his last couple of starts. I know I’m in the minority (although less so now than two weeks ago), but I hope he doesn’t opt out. He was already basically worth the money in the regular season, and if he has unlocked something here and can be the same guy in the postseason then that is not something that you an easily go and get on the market, no matter what you’re willing to pay.RhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑5 years agoBrandon Morrow made $21 million for 2 years, Mike Minor made $28 million for 3 years, Wade Davis $52 million over 3 years, all this past offseason amongst others. On a personal level, I’m super happy for Price. I have always rooted for the guys I thought Boston fans have treated unfairly - most they successfully destroyed and ran out of town, so it’s good to see one of them fight thru it and come out the other side delivering and making people appreciate him. The bad side of Boston sports fans is their tendency to seize upon perceived weakness and grind those guys into dust; the good side is that if you deliver for them they’ll love you forever (unless you end up revealing yourself to be a clown and a nutbag like Curt Schilling or that one dope who was the goalie for the Bruins Stanley Cup team).

Brilliance by everyone...except Kinsler and the 1-4 hitters who combined to go 0-28 with 12 Ks. Ouch.

Someone, I think Jeff Howe, had a great line on Twitter. Something to the effect of it is healthier to eat a bag of salt than watch Ian Kinsler run the bases. Lol. Kindler is a gold glove finalist.. Really.. He has gotten old fast.. One thing in his defense is what's up with the turf at dodger stadium.. Haven't seen much mentioned but there were divots everywhere including after kinslers fateful error.. Embarrassing field conditions.. What's it going to look like tonight.. Hope kinsler is not this years Buckner... Oh yeah mookie needs to hit as well as rest of top of order... Hope last night was a mirage.. How does Cora piece tonight together

Been a lot of David Price discussion on talk radio about his October history.
With a good start tonight (maybe 6-7 innings, a couple runs or less and a Sox W), is he the Series MVP?

MVP voting - regular and post-season, across all sports - is usually narrative / story-driven as well, and he has a hell of a story if he pitches well tonight. It would be two wins, plus a decent relief appearance, and I'm not sure if there has been an obvious candidate from the lineup. (JBJ, maybe, if they had won that 18-inning game.)Shaolin Swat wrote: ↑5 years agoI would think so, a good start would probably get him World Series MVP - which is probably something that nobody in Boston would have believed a month agoNYGFan_Section208 wrote: ↑5 years ago Been a lot of David Price discussion on talk radio about his October history.

Re: Red Sox and other Major League Baseball
Yanks aren't going to sit back and let the Red Sox waltz to another division title next season.
Just traded for Paxton, and Corbin is next.
Probably will sign Machado, head case and all...just too talented to pass up....and they need a SS.
They don't need Harper....they have enough mediocre gloves, along with guys who either whiff or homer and not much else...Harper would be another version of Stanton.
They also know that good pitching beats good hitting in the playoffs...and the Yanks team BA was horrendous last season....if no homers, then they couldn't score.
Red Sox imo won because they had better situational hitting, along with unexpectedly good performances from their bullpen, along with Eovaldi pitching lights out and of course even Price woke up.
The perfect storm if you're a Sox fan.

Is that a scary thing moving forward though?
If the team doesn't make any big changes and brings back essentially the same core, can you rely on that "perfect storm" happening again?
To me, 2013 was a little similar as a team that outperformed expectations.
'18 definitely better than '13, and '13 legitimately came out of no where versus this team that was division champs the last few seasons.
But that '13 team was great in clutch and late situations, but when it ended, that went back to where they were before it started.
Scares me a little moving forward.

Re: Red Sox and other Major League Baseball
So Betts wants to wait until he's a free agent.
Makes perfect sense....for him and his wallet.
He sees what Trout, Harper, and Machado got....he wants the Sox to pony up big time by playing them off against other suitors.
And if for some reason they don't offer him what he wants?
He'll be 28, still young enough to command a long term deal.
I doubt he'll end up in NY though. The Yanks have to pay the Judge.
Teams are now locking up their young stars on long term deals.....risky due to possible injuries, but seems to be the trend.
If a player, no matter how good, is over 30 the chances of getting a long term deal are well, dead.

The money in pro sports is obscene. Yes I love sports, but priorities are way out of whack.
Guys making 30+ million a year....and none of them are even remotely worth it.
But people keep shelling out big bucks to watch them, so it will only get bigger.

I know it's only opening day, but what's up with Sale?
Pitching batting practice early.
With that bullpen, the Sox can't have too many short outings by their starters.
Yes their hitting will bail them out most times just like the Yanks, but at least NY has a bullpen.

Re: Red Sox and other Major League Baseball
Last year everything went right for the Sox. Hard to expect that to happen again.
Several guys had career years.
This season with no bullpen, and if anything happens to Sale they will be hard pressed to win the division again.
Could depend on how much injuries affect the Yankees.
Of course more deals could be made by the trade deadline....but again the Sox payroll is so bloated that how many moves can they make?
The Sox window of opportunity to win more titles may not have more than a couple more years to run.

Season is long but Sox definitely paying with fire with their roster construction. They were able to survive their pitching last season because of their elite hitting, and it wasn’t just their bullpen. So if they stay healthy and lead the league in runs, batting average, and OPS, can they survive their pitching? Sure. But it still doesn’t minimize the risk or the fact it’s a major red flag.

FWIW, I'd always rather bet on hitting from year-to-year vs. pitching, if I had to pick one. It seems like there is more consistency in offense.rjsuperfly66 wrote: ↑5 years ago Season is long but Sox definitely paying with fire with their roster construction. Re: Red Sox and other Major League Baseball
Well both the Sox and Yanks had very forgettable opening series. Sox pitching took the weekend off. Even their hitting couldn't save them.
Stanton is horrible. Huge bust. Needs to be moved down the batting order. Way down. Sanchez swings at everything also. And his catching and even his throwing now is pathetic. Judge won't have a huge year if those 2 keep sucking.
And Gardner...why did they keep him? He's done.
As bad as the Orioles are, they play and pitch like world champs when they come to NY.
Tampa is the real deal, they can pitch, big time. I said earlier they are a wild card if they can hit just a little.

Re: Red Sox and other Major League Baseball
The book is out on how to stop Stanton.
Sliders away.....he swings at them all....and never hits one.
Huge waste of money that contract....and the Yanks need to look at other options at catcher.
It's early yes, but it's laughable how many times Stanton comes up with runners on base and whiffs.
Can't have your number 3 hitter strike out 250 times, which he will likely do this season.
You have to at least make contact....he doesn't. I think they left 35 runners on base the first 3 games.
I would drop him to 6th or 7th in the order until he wakes up, if he ever does.
Team BA is already around .240 like last year...good pitching will beat them often.
The late 90's Yankees hit in the clutch and manufactured runs without hitting a lot of HR's....that's the recipe for success and it hasn't changed.
If they don't change they won't win anything.

Re: Red Sox and other Major League Baseball
Rough weekend for the Sox, hard to survive horrific starting pitching.
In the first 3 innings:
Game 1: Trailing 7-2
Game 2: Trailing 3-1
Game 3: Tied 2-2
Game 4: Trailing 9-3
In the first 5 innings:
Game 1: Trailing 8-2
Game 2: Trailing 6-2
Game 3: Trailing 6-2
Game 4: Trailing 10-6
Funny that for all the concerns about the bullpen, the bullpen had a very good series outside of opening day.
Game 1: 5 innings, 4 ER
Game 2: 4 innings, 0 ER
Game 3: 3.2 innings, 0 ER
Game 4: 5.1 innings, 1 ER
I really glad Eck got his contract extended, really enjoy his commentary.
His comments about Ryan Brasier's son, Colton, had my wife chuckling, and it takes a lot to make my wife laugh from sports commentary.
