Was the move that really had to be done. I see very good things coming within 3 years (even better than the past 2 years) but time will tell. Good luck coach and congrats.

Can FINALLY turn to the page to next season, put this one behind us, and move forward.
Being a good recruiter is a major part of being a good coach (i.e. Cooley). Good foot to lead off with coming off a good mentor. Congrats!

if there's any chance to do it, please steal back Preston and make him the associate HC...maybe he's unhappy after Creighton hired an assistant above him.

I have high hopes for the Cox era. Time to build on that momentum from the past two years and keep this thing trending upwards.
Also excited to see how he fills out the rest of the staff.

Re: The David Cox Era
The contract should be set up a lot like Hurley's contract at UConn. He has no excuse not to reach the tournament inside 3 years so I would say no more than 4 years base, with a year and a significant raise tacked on automatically for making the NCAA tournament. Let's say you start him at 4 x $600,000 for $2.4 million total. Makes the tournament the first year it becomes a five year deal, and you tack on $100,000 for each of the next four years, so the deal becomes 1 x $600,000 plus 4 x $700,000 for 3.4 million total for an average of $680,000 over the life of the deal and so on.

Why would Preston go back to a job he left years ago for a new coach with less experience? Why would he take the demotion?Da_Process_Survivor wrote:if there's any chance to do it, please steal back Preston and make him the associate HC...maybe he's unhappy after Creighton hired an assistant above him.

Re: The David Cox Era
Making another donation to the basketball program once this is officially announced by Thorr to thank him for doing the right thing.
For those who made the symbolic $20.18 contribution last month, maybe you can make a $20.19 contribtion after the press conference to show we support David Cox. Just a thought.

I agree RR2, except that I think he starts at a higher number.....say 800K....
His base will likely be what Dan's was...about 350K plus gate receipts and various other incentives.

because its a promotion. he never really got a chance to be associate HC here before. He was named to it right before leaving for BC. He took a demotion to go to BCRhowdyRam02 wrote:Why would Preston go back to a job he left years ago for a new coach with less experience? Re: The David Cox Era
I think there's a good chance he comes back, as long as the assistants pay scale is a good bit higher than it was.
If PM was making 300K at Creighton, to come back I would think URI would have to match that. And they should.
Have to get and keep quality assistants to keep the train rolling.

Re: The David Cox Era
The salary was just a random number I threw out and I'm not particularly invested one way or another in what that is so long as both sides feel it is fair. I am adamant the deal shouldn't be more than four years to start and shouldn't be extended unless we make the tournament. People haven't wanted to acknowledge this for the most part, but we're taking on a fair amount of risk in hiring a first time head coach, so we should hold firm in minimizing the years on that risk. The four plus years for tournament allows us to minimize the risk on our end and allows Cox to recruit new talent in by saying his contract will be extended once they make the tournament and he'll be here during the recruits career.rambone 78 wrote:I agree RR2, except that I think he starts at a higher number.....say 800K....

Boswell should stay in the 3rd Ast spot. Cox needs his top two Ast to be able to do the scout etc.
some mention of Mike Rice.
While I was hitting submit to post this the tweet from Mike Rice came up.

Mike Tomlin has won quite a few games even if you don't like him. Hopefully Coach Cox will too. I believe he will
No idea if a Mike Rice would ever be considered as an assistant, but despite his past issues the man is a very good basketball mind with experience.

I have always had the drive inside of me to do more, to achieve and to excel," Cox said. "Nothing will change that mindset moving forward. We have won Atlantic 10 championships and NCAA tournament games in the last two years. That is now the bar. Moving forward, our goal is to repeat as A-10 champions, get back to the NCAA tournament and make an even deeper run. Year after year, we are going to recruit at the highest level possible and continue to attract top-100 players, high-major players and players with high character who fit our culture."

Re: The David Cox Era
Would love Mike Rice with regards to his basketball knowledge. Outstanding developer of talent, very knowledgeable with drills and x's and o's. With that said, if he wants to go the assistant route I could see a higher major program trying to grab him, as he is tied in very closely with the Team Rio duo of Bryan Antonie and Scottie Lewis.
