Looking ahead to 2018-2019
Now that Rhody has bowed out of the NCAA Tournament, what should we expect for next year?

If the Rams win 24 games next year, Nicola Akele becomes the winningest player in URI history (92 wins in 4 years)... so there's that to get excited about.

Re: Looking ahead to 2018-2019
I wouldn’t be surprised to see one transfer out so we’ll have two openings to target guys who back out of their commitments due to coaching changes, etc. If Dan stays, we are in a strong position to grab another top 100 type that comes free late. With Dan at the Healm, our programs trajectory is outrageous.

I am pretty sure the incoming recruiting class will fill your wish list. My wish list includes 1 thing and 1 thing only, that this team adopts Fatt's killer instinct and philly attitude. I love our kids but none of them have that killer instinct, assassin, I'm gonna get pissed and beat your ass mentality. I think that hurt us badly today.

I'm looking forward to enjoying my very first year of season tickets, and I have EC, JT, Stanimal, Dre, Jarvis, Fatts, Jeff, Cyril and of course Coach Hurley to thank for reigniting my passion for the Rhody Rams!

Re: Looking ahead to 2018-2019
We definitely need a shooter and a big. I'm realistic in thinking that may be tough to find in the same player.
I'd also like to see us play with a little more size at the same time. JH at the 4, CL at the 5, JD at the 1, Fatts at the 2, and TBD at the 3. Ideally Fatts will get his shot down more consistently and be a scorer for us next year. I think next year the toughest change will be finding scoring. We're losing nearly all of our scoring in the offseason. EC JT SR AB went for about 55 points a game, that's a lot of buckets to fill. This season showed us that we can trust Jeff with a lot of those, but I thing a strong secondary scorer will have to step up. I think Harris or Fatts will be averaging over 15 PPG by A10 play.

Coaches have mentioned he's practiced all year and usually guards JT. He is expected to fill Stan's role next year, tough defense, hustle plays, and scoring here and there.section(105) wrote:......his year of no competition concerns me to get him up to game speed......then x factor this year was Akele......we saw how that turned out......Preston, bench Mikes are all x minus for me......twisted3829 wrote:CT as well, think he's the x factor

Re: Looking ahead to 2018-2019
I have always been a fan of Thompson. I hope he works on his 3 ball because it could be huge playing with Fatts and Downtin and 2 inside threats to score. I liked all of our players on this years team but I think we have the two best fastbreak guards coming back next year. Fatts and Dowtin both have superior court vision and handles.Dre3000 wrote:Coaches have mentioned he's practiced all year and usually guards JT. Cox did have a big hand in recruiting at least 3 of them [next year's recruits] Not sure about Tate.

I think what Akele and Preston have going for them is that they are 4th year players, experience and age matters at this level. Having them coming off the bench at the 4 and 5 respectively is a strong backup tandem. I’m higher on Akele than most on here, his stretch four game next year will be key.section(105) wrote:.......I would say a definite maybe.....all depends on how impactful the frosh are going to be, learning the defense, earning PT and developing quickly at this level.....the biggest questions for me, remaining are Akele and Preston.....the sample size small, but what was scene was not real good in either case.....yeah sure, the Berry story is fresh in our minds......be in the top tier A-10 mix for a bid.....yesreef wrote:Next year looks good . I think Martin’s and Tate’s transition will be more seemless than Adams due to the level they currently play at in HS. Overall though, next years team will be a. Holding block for the following season. If they can snag a transfer, opt out top 125-150 freshmen this off season, all of that builds on what Dan already has rolling next year.

I just hope the ball keeps rolling in the right direction. The onous now is on the administration to keep up the commitment.. Especially since they have already hit us with paying for next years tickets at a decent increase... Do whatever you can to keep this staff together or get a comparable staff that can keep this promising incoming class together.. If we continue along this track of commitment with a competent staff and talented student athletes the future remains bright.

I think out of all the freshman Dana Tate will be ready to go from day one and contribute immediately. He has a college body already and I think will surprise some people, can definitely fill in at the 3 spot along side fatts, dowtin, Harris and langevine.

Over Harris? That’s questionable. I expect Harris to be the only freshmen to start next year. I love Thompson and I too think he is a knock down shooter. His defense is the best. I hope they don't ask him to guard 7 footers in the post as their strategy like Stan.

Dan has already mentioned that they were likely going back to the traditional two front court player system next year. The way the current roster is constructed, that makes sense. Thompson will play a lot at the 3 next year.Seawrightspostgame wrote:I love Thompson and I too think he is a knock down shooter. His defense is the best. Re: Looking ahead to 2018-2019
I think that's fair when comparing next year's roster to this year, but overall I would say we are not trending down. I think next year sets up as a bridge year from this year's really good team to the 2019-20 potentially great team. And that I think URI comes into next season as a bubble team during a "bridge year" says a ton about where the program is at right now.reef wrote:Trending down ?? I disagree!!!
The other point I've made before about next year: if we can finish top-4 in the league and get the double bye, I wouldn't want to play us if I was another A10 team. We should peak late with so many young players playing good sized roles, and our leaders will have a lot of winning experience: two straight A10 title games, one win, two NCAA win, etc. That's something nobody else in our league will have. Grady at Davidson and Stockard at Bona, but not the same as having Cyril, Jeff, Akele, and Fatts and Thompson with some of that as well.

Re: Looking ahead to 2018-2019
The guys that are leaving were very successful but its not like they do everything on the basketball court the best. If the new guys can do some stuff better than the other guys we will be alright. Like saying Dowtin was better than Jarvis was blasphemous 16 months ago but now it's just accepted.
This group was great and locked in but they also had a home heavy schedule during the 16 game run and they weren't playing other program's top teams for instance Traveon Graham wasn't out there with Mo Allie Cox and company. What would be the top win during that run? Bonaventure? I thought that was an impressive win at home.
I think EC was all time URI great and Jared too. But the team as a whole? I think it is a mixed bag. They deserve recognition for their accomplishments, but next year's team will be a good one.
Again 3 starters that have all league potential and have tournament experience. Dowtin/Langevine/Fatts haven't played a season that they didn't win a championship and dance at the end. Thats huge.

If Dan stays, and the recruits come in, settle in, with the returning players. It will be a very young, but exciting team, with a lot of freshman growing pains. They'll lose a few early on in the clutch just due to inexperience, but will be vastly improved by the end of the year. Probably looking at a possible NIT bid, with room to grow.
If Dan goes, some chaos, we would then need the University to look for the best possible coach out there.

I believe the A10 will be a 4 bid league next year.
I think we’ll be the 4th via a Brooklyn run.
We’ll rely on freshman to do some of the lifting, they will gel later in the year.

Agree with BM and others, our league will step back into our normal 3-4 bid realm next year (even tho we got 3 this year but it was fortunate break getting Davidson in). Also think BE will take a tiny step back given their top 2 programs (Nova and X) should lose a lot.

I can't disagree. While my in depth knowledge of the A10 isn't as good as most. Here's a list of teams I think have the potential to at least be in the conversation in Feb/March (in no particular order):Blue Man wrote:I believe the A10 will be a 4 bid league next year.

URI
UMass
SLU
SJU
Davidson
VCU
Of course, a lot of this depends on the OOC schedules of these teams (which I haven't looked up). Not only how these schedules are, but how these teams do with the schedule and how the scheduled teams do. Remember, Davidson's non conf schedule was strong enough to give them an at large bid, they just didn't win enough games. If they had a better OOC record, they are in regardless and the A10 isn't under-rated. Also, on paper, URI has a pretty strong OOC schedule next year (home games vs. WVa, 'Bama, and Nevada - 3 current sweet 16 teams, road at Providence, the Hawaii tournament). But if some of those teams take the pipe, then the OOC goes up in smoke, then URI could be on the outside looking in next March. That's the toughest thing about the scheduling. You not only have to schedule the games, but also hope your opponent will be having good years. I'm sure WVA will continue to be good. But if Nevada and 'Bama lose a lot (I don't know how many seniors they have) and take a step back, then that could be devastating. But you still have to keep scheduling these teams. Nevada and Bama were definitely good additions to this year's schedule and I'm glad they were on the road this season.

Nevada could be a Top 10 team next year. Return everyone from a Sweet 16 team. Bama likely loses Sexton, but Avery is recruiting well there and SEC is always going to be strong so not much risk. WVU is WVU, always strong.
