I love it - so earlier in the season it's "THE VOTERS ARE DUMB OH MY GOD HOW IS URI NOT RANKED YET LOOK WHO WE'VE BEAT LOOK AT OUR BODY OF WORK!!"
Now it's "THE VOTERS ARE DUMB OH MY GOD HOW IS URI RANKED LOOK AT THIS ONE WEEK OF BASKETBALL OUT OF 17 WEEKS IGNORE OUR BODY OF WORK JUST FOCUS ON HOW BAD WE PLAYED IN 2 OUT OF 29 GAMES!!"
Now it's "THE VOTERS ARE DUMB OH MY GOD HOW IS URI RANKED LOOK AT THIS ONE WEEK OF BASKETBALL OUT OF 17 WEEKS IGNORE OUR BODY OF WORK JUST FOCUS ON HOW BAD WE PLAYED IN 2 OUT OF 29 GAMES!!"

Correct BlueMan. The ship is always sinking, and we are supposed to run back and forth from one end to the other, depending on the direction of the waves...The good times -regardless of length - are never good enough and the instances in time that aren't as good are never portrayed as bad enough...

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2017-18
Team earned a lot more respect than many of us were giving them. I was certain Rhody was done in top 25.
Love being wrong!!
Hard work paid off, do some more of it this week and have a run!!
Go Rhody!

really? Dayton's motivation is that we beat them twice? how about being motivated by the fact that, in a down year, if they beat us, they will only be 2 more wins from making the ncaa tournament?
enough of this already...at this time of year the only motivation is to win your conference championship and to make it to the dance...and if you are already a lock, to improve your seed. nothing else matters. even if you are Fordham, you have a new chance. do you think if Fordham plays us in the semi finals their motivation to win that game is that we beat them earlier in the year? get a grip.

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2017-18
Why URI remains in the rankings simply reflects the respect that Dan Hurley has received from both the coaches and the writers on how he has built a program at URI. It is that broad perspective that wins out versus one in the "weeds" that over emphasizes the bad and inexplicable performance versus St. Joe's or the choke job at Davidson.

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2017-18
Once again, west coast writer Jon Wilner, of the San Jose Metcury News, ranked us higher then our actual ranking. We were #18 on his ballot this week, and that was the highest of any of the AP voters. He has consistently ranked us higher then the average each week. He did drop us from #14 on his ballot last week. Interestingly, a couple of years ago, when PC was in the top 25 for many weeks, including a few in the top 10, which AP voter ranked them higher then any other voter? Jon Wilner. Every week he ranked them the highest of all writers. Maybe he's from New England....

Can you say RANKED - way to go RHODY.
Everyone that isn't psyched and impressed that we are still ranked - can go suck an egg.
They earned this - a freak accident happened at Davidson. We win that game up 6 at the end 98 times out of 100. so be it.
Looking forward to playing FRIDAY and kicking some ass

RF1 - please do not read anything into me quoting you three times today to make a counterpoint. Just so happens that three of your posts served as good prompts for some point I wanted to make; I did not wake up this morning looking to argue with you on the internet.RF1 wrote:I was thinking a drop out of the polls might be a good motivational tool for our team. I actually think remaining in the top-25 could be really good for our players psychologically. Falling out of the top-25 could be internalized by the players that it was falling apart on them, that they have "blown" something already. Could add to the pressure and the sense that they have to make make up for something this weekend in DC. Instead, the message they get from the polls is "yeah, you guys fucked up last week, but we still recognize you're one of the best teams in the country." That kind of reassurance could be buoying to the team.
To make a kind of weird and admittedly imperfect analogy, it's like if you're playing a career round of golf and on the 16th hole you hit your drive out of bounds and you find yourself 15 feet away putting for bogey. I feel like hanging onto the #25 spot is like holing your 15 footer and making 5, whereas falling out of the poll would be like knocking your putt two feet past the hole. Limiting the damage can make what you do next a lot less anxiety ridden.

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2017-18
The longer Rhody stays in the top 25, the more branding our basketball program has. People will get accustomed to it, and being accepted as a "top 25" program raises the level of recruit who considers us. I don't think we need to overanalyze motivation and whatnot, being ranked is better than not being ranked.
If we end up winning a game or two (more?) in the tourney and maintain our ranking into the offseason, maybe we get a nod in the preseason poll despite our significant senior losses. That would give the new look team some swagger early on, which I think is good - seems like Dowtin in particular would welcome that.

Thanks. I was just reading his bio and some interviews. He's a native of Maryland, but has been covering Pac12 football and basketball since 1989. I did not realize his column was that widely read and award winning. No top 25 ranking in the final AP Poll. In the others receiving votes category (#28 with 66 votes). Non-NCAA Tournament participant St. Mary's was #25.

In the CBS podcast they continued to slam St Mary's after they identified even more schools they turned down this year to play (like Nevada) and even bought-out a return game of a home and home to avoid another good team (Creighton?).
This writer called it on October 7th that their weak schedule would haunt them:

Then their coach has the nerve to bitch to Jeff Goodman about the bias of the selection committee.
Hey Randy Bennett: maybe don't hide under your bed for non-conference and you wouldn't be in this mess.
No sympathy whatsoever for them.

No reason to schedule like that when you have a decent team playing in a crap conference. This is all on Randy Bennett

The committee told them last year with the snub that running through a crap schedule wont cut it.
They respond by turning down games against us, Creighton and Nevada, and playing the 180th toughest SOS.
On their board, the fans are killing the coach over the scheduling

Their excuse that they had scheduling conflicts is horseshit. You change the OTHER games to make room for better opponents.
It's called priorities. They will have more of the same issues next season....since they backed out of the Diamond Head classic.
Maybe they are waiting for Gonzaga to leave......

Exactly. Dan Hurley is a great example of understanding what is needed to get an invite from a scheduling perspective.rambone 78 wrote:Their excuse that they had scheduling conflicts is horseshit. You change the OTHER games to make room for better opponents.

Each year he's looked at his team and put forth a challenging, but not impossible schedule - with a good mix of quality wins, elite opponents, and big opportunities.
St Mary's disgusts me. It would've been awesome to have a game on Long Island or another one at Mohegan.
